2 reasons why this won't effect the war much.
The cost of a duo player is twice as much and big chain stores won't carry HD-DVD and Blu-ray within one year because there's not enough shelf space carry 1 kind of movie on 3 different discs(HD-DVD, blu-ray, and dvd).
How is a nearly twice the cost expensive player going to have any impact whatsoever?
Unless they can drive down the cost of this DUO drive to match either HD-DVD or BLURAY alone its meaningless.
Forgive me, but how does the release of a single HD-DVD player ultimately decide the fate of Blu-ray and Sony?NazzyQ
You could make the argument that Samsung (being one of the contributors for the development of Blu-Ray) is concerned about BR's longevity and reliability.
Until Samsung stops making BR players altogether...there really is no point in being a doom sayer over this.

That's old new dude. LG has announced a Dual HD Player that supports HD-DVD & Blu-Ray a long time ago. I honestly don't think it's going to matter. Both formats are going to fail in the end I think. Sony has over 3 million Blu-Rays in people homes, but is only selling 1500-2000 brand new Blu-Ray movies a week. HD-DVD is selling even worse. There will be a new format that holds 100GB very soon. Wait for it.

Blu-Ray will have 100GB discs by the end of the year and the 200GB discs are getting closer to completion.

Sony is going to forcefeed blu-ray to consumers because they have money. DVD sucks!

100GB is small potatoes when dealing with new formats.
The holographic disc can hit 3.9 Terabytes.
yeah but the cost of those is probably out of the realm of the average consumer.
Once Universal start supporting Blu-Ray, the war is pretty much over. They don't seem to be completly dedicated to supporting HD-DVD so it shoulden't be to long:
""Although the Blu-ray format has many advantages over competing technologies and has the support of numerous studios including Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, MGM, Lions Gate, Paramount and Warner, Universal has decided not to release titles in this format. We will let you know when and if that changes, along with other updates about how well the Blu-ray format has been accepted."

3.9 tb... Wow. That's impressive.
didn't Bill Gates say in a press conference that the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray era is the last generation of digital storage media and after that everything will be online! :Pdonwoogie
And your point is? If blu-ray is mainstream like DVD was for the same amount of time then Sony would earn so much money.
sony will not make a Duo player .so y the hell will some keep buying a sony BR player when u can get a DUO PLAYER
price will drop. i have a ps3 and hd-dvd.but one thing u fanboy will post sony win 9:2 hd war and u are happy but when
someone post something BAD about sony u get mad growup.

Holodisks may be impressive but it's the media not the medium that drives the revenue. Movie Studios won't release anything higher then 1080p because doing so would put them dangerously close to releasing there digital master quality transfers (2700p+) and gaming publishers are not interested on filling games with anymore content than whats already available doing so would increase budget and decrease revenue on sequels. Hence 4 TB of digital optical storage is useless to all areas of media commerce. Hence the technology will simply take a back shelf until it's uses are more readily needed by the commercial market. The only thing I can see these Holodisks being used for is shooting 1080p footage for Hollywood Digital Cameras even then they got HardDrives and Cassettes.

He's probably correct, once blu-ray's can store 100GB+ there shoulden't be need for another movie storage format for quite some time. At which point broadband speeds and technology should have improved enough for us to be able to download / stream HD content. Apple and Microsoft are being quite forward looking in this department, and are likely to make a killing being first to market.

A 100gb blu-ray disc might as well be considered a whole new format separate from Blu-ray since no way will 100gb discs be used for movies if the current and future players can't read them, it would be like starting all over again. So bringing up 100-200gb discs that blu-ray can do has no basis in the movie market, only in the computer storage market.

WTF are you talking about. BTW tool late on that I have known about the DUO Player since three months ago. You forget that Sonys PS3 plays games as well.

impressive?.. more like spectacular, man could you imagine how many por..err um "educational" movies you could fit in one of those,it would take a life time to fill one of those f-ers up
lol this doest mean anything doesnt matter about sony ... it matters on the format of the disk blu-ray is already winning at my bestbuy they've already taken a shelf away from hd-dvd .. and givin it to blu-ray .... if anything it would help show the better quality of b-ray ... dummie for posting it
Um...So how does this mean Blu ray is done? I mean, BR is already outselling HDDVD 9:1 in software. All this gives is the People a choice...jechtshot78
No, you're wrong. The Blu-ray is outselling the HDDVD 100:0 in software. HD DVD isn't used in games or apps and HD DVD drives for comps are way too expensive to be useful. They are beating HD DVD sales 9:2 which is nearly 5:1. Every HD DVD sold, 5 Blurays are
Samsung does still sell Stand Alone Blu Ray players so I dont see how it will effect Sony. Besides HD DVD Bluray combined players cost more money anyway.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. They are still have problems trying to create 50GB Blu-Ray movies. Have they even made any yet? Ever Blu-Ray movie that has been released have been on 25GB format. Whatever the case, there will be a better format out within the next 2 yrs.

I have to ask...
What better quality that Blu-ray has?
Good time to get in stocks kids. Sony stock will soar in a year to 2 year span. Why? Cuz people are droppin out. Selling away. Even if the PS3 fails, Sony will win with the BR. They will force it upon u. So bad news for the other companies. Best of luck though hero.ez_moneymaker
You are jumping ahead way to soon. Let's give it another year and see how much movie sales increase. Blu-Ray movies are selling about as well as UMD's did when they were released. We all saw how that turned out. Consumers still haven't warmed up to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD yet. Selling 2000 Blu-Ray movies a week is NOT good. If they were selling 10-15K a week, that might be a different story. DVD's can sell over a million copies in less then a month. You're right that it's a good time to buy Sony stock though, because their stock had dropped very low because of all the money they've lossed in the past 5 years. Their electronics is improving and they are starting to make some profit now. So if you can get Sony's stock cheap, go for it.

Stop with that 9:2 ratio, that was a bias rating during a time of low releases from HD-DVD and skewed by Casino Royal on blu-ray. Still, i'll admit Blu-ray sales history is probably slightly higher than HD-DVD at the moment.
The worst part about this is I have no idea why I chose HD-DVD as my main format when both are good, people chose Blu-ray and I could have easily gone with blu-ray myself. I have both formats, but I still feel loyalty to HD-DVD. Could it be because HD-DVD was first out the gate and I just couldn't help buy it at the $500 pricetag. Then Blu-ray launched with only a $1000 player and all the launch titles ended up with horrible reviews, no 50 gig discs, overall it was a let down when they had been advertising more space, better quality, etc, and failed to deliver all around. At first that is, now things have evened out, many players at different priceranges on both formats, blu-ray quality has finally caught up to HD-DVD, etc. The extra space Blu-ray has is nice, whenever they can do 50 gigs all the time that is, but 30gigs has proven to be easily enough to do this job, and a 2nd disc for extras isn't the death of the format.
mate its all good, the sales for blue ray do not compare with HD DVD's, dual player DUAL means the person chooses, the availability of blue ray and the press and media have taken up with blue ray and more people know blue ray than HD DVD think its something like 4 to 1 ratio or something cant member (dont quote that cnt member entierly) and more people in the world will be blue ray capable as a result of the PS3 having blue ray capabilities unlike the xbox 360 who do not cater to the HD DVD. its all gud i reckon blue ray will still come out top. If not sony is gonna be in a hell of a lot of trouble.

Too bad holographic discs are unusable for things such as media. Movies and games can never be released on those discs. The only thing they could possibly be used for is to transfer high quality film masters on a couple of discs rather then many HD cassetes.
