Well, I personally haven't seen, read nor heard of any physical limitation on the amount of storage that a PS3 would recognize for an internal hard drive. But right now, I've not seen any hard drives that would physically fit in the ps3 being larger than 500GB, either. WD just made a 750GB one, but that one is in a non-standard size, and may not exactly fit inside the ps3.
any size will do as long as it is a 2.5 inch sata laptop with a fata format stlye. The biggest one i'v seen is the 500gb, there is no 1tb for laptops yet, unless if you want to get a 1tb that you can plug up thur usb but it wont save your games on there unless you copy from your hdd to the 1tb you can put music,movies,pics, and downloads on there witch can free alot of your ps3 hdd.

1TB works, my friend has it in his PS3 and it works fine. Anything over and it's pushing it, I'm guessing.
Can you provide a link to what HDD your friend has? The only 1TB 2.5" drive that I know of is Western Digital and I've heard before that it actually doesn't fit in the PS3 since it's taller than regular HDDs. It says it's taller than regular ones on the official website so I know that much is true. I don't have one so I haven't been able to test if it can fit into a PS3 or not.
