I have star wars episode 1 in VHS, and the same movie in DVD. And when I play them both in a 27" regular tv, there's no difference at all. So there's no WOW factor there.

THen I played them both in my 47 TV, the difference is quite small in image quality as well. So where's the wow factor there? Remember, VHS and DVD's resolution aren't that big.

Then I played both version of the new 007 on my 37" 1080P TV, the color, the resolution make a huge difference.

I always question those who say there's not big enough of a difference with the following question: why don't they set their desktop resolution at 600*400 (if there such a thing)?

[QUOTE="lennygundam14"]this also depends on video compression.  Blu-ray uses the Mpeg-2 and mpeg-4, at first blu-ray movies used the mpeg-2 format, which is still used on DVDs. thats why blu-ray movies looked like trash compared to HD-DVD  VC-1  compression.  since the Big movies such as Casino Royale, which uses the Mpeg-4 video compression, Blu-ray movies look amazing!  The next big blu-ray movies that should be watched by everyone should be Pirates.  you'll notice a huge difference compared to HD-DVD, it surpasses it.  a rumor that I heard was that HD-dvd cant use Mpeg -4 because of the space it needs compared to blu-ray, sorry if I mistaken if anyone has an HD-DVD player to confirm this.bizzy420

WRONG!  read some reviews at hidef digest, or dvdtalk, and you'll see that mpeg2 can look just as good as mpg4 and vc1.

i read that already. when blu-ray released in the US, the visuals werent so good because of the use of the codec, since those reviews about mpeg-2 on blu-ray, movie studios made it better. lol im not saying that its bad anyway if you seen casino royale(which uses Mpeg-4) you would notice a difference becuase of the use of codecs, at the end of the day Mpeg 4/VC-1 is superior to mpeg-2 even though they upgraded the use of visuals on mpeg 2

the fact is, people want to buy the media. a great majority of people will not go for the digital distribution because they don't have anything physically in their hands.eclipsed4utoo

At this point, it is not logical to assume they will buy Blu-Ray or HD-DVD either. They have done a wonderful job of avoiding it entirely and, eventually, studios will stop making titles as there is almost literally no market for it.

Look at the current market. NetFlix is hugely popular, yet DVD sales are still very high. it shows that even though people are not required to buy movies, most still do because they want something to put their hands on. it shows ownership.

Until Blu-Ray/HD-DVD release for $20 new, it will have a problem in competing with DVD.

I don't know about you, but when comparing Planet Earth, Kingdom of Heaven, and Casino Royale Blu-Rays to their DVD counterparts, the difference is significantly more than the difference that I noticed between Jurassic Park VHS and DVD.

Sure, I'll give DVD an advantage, because the jump from 1.5 hour VHS, with no extra features, and constant rewinding, do 2-3 hour disc, numerous special features, scene selection, and no rewinds necessary was huge, in my opinion.

However, when you go with quality differences, the jump from tape to disc is much less than the jump from SD to 1080p HD.

That said, I feel that it IS great for movies (even with the higher price tag).

Well said. And also note that the form factor of DVD to BD-ROM is the same. But for VHS to DVD, it was a completely different form factor. So, there's no learning curve or major redesign for BD-ROM since it uses slot loading or tray media as well as sharing general fast-tracking and chapter features as DVD did. Disc size is the same too.
