no bluray = ps3 winning, its doing the same thing as the ps2, its just early technolgy, about 3 years bluray will be mainstream.
Note each succeeding system has used a new format. (cartridges, cd, dvd, and now bluray) MS is being very dumb, they rushed their system. Â
yes they should off, people by game systems for games not movies, movies arnt gonan sell the system, i like the discs and like that they can hold so much space but it seems the 360 is doin fine with dvds so the ps3 coudl of aswell, the blu ray was uneeded and will cause alot of peopel to pass ont he system due to the price it made it-DirtySanchez-

Sony CEO Howard Stringer commented on the console wars in an unaired TV interview covered at Australian tech site Smarthouse. Sringer explains the reason behind why Sony could fail with the PS3, and has a few words about the competition.
Stringer's comments are indicative of Sony's misunderstanding of the hardcore gaming audience that they try to attract with the PS3. The majority of dedicated gamers don't want a console that's a home server, a game device and a computer. They simply want a console with good games, that's easy to use, and easy to develop for. There was another console that released in the early 90's that touted itself as the high end gaming console for hardcore gamers, the 3DO. Despite having better technology than any other system on the market, lots of competition, a high price tag(699.95$ at release in 1993!), and a lack of quality titles caused the 3DO to fail. While the PS3 is already much better off in the market than the 3DO was, and has much better support, the comparison is still valid. Sony needs to stop telling the market why the PS3 is superior to the other consoles on the market, and needs to start showing us the games and the features that will force gamers to come to terms with the hefty price tag.
And when asked about the popularity of Nintendo's Wii vs. PS3 , Stringer said, "Wii is a wonderful device, but has a different target audience. If we fail, it is because we positioned PS3 as the Mercedes of the video game field. PS3 is after a different audience and it can be whatever it wants - a home server, game device, even a computer."

Exactly. HD-DVD has been out longer than Blu-Ray, and it's already being outsold 3 to 1. It also has a majority of the movie industries' support. I don't want to come off as attacking MS, but they really made a mistake on releasing that additional HD drive. Those who purchased it ended up spending the same amount as a PS3, yet they attack the system, just because it's the "in" thing to do right now. PS3 is why many are starting to buy Blu-Ray Discs, just imagine what will happen when the PS3 launches in Europe later this week.
Um no i dont agree. Bluray is how they differentiate themselves from the competition, and since bluray slaes have been up id say it was a good decision. And Factor five say that bluray has allowed tomke such huge levels in Lair that the other consoles would only be able to fit about 4. Blu-ray equals good. I haven't bought a movie on bluray yet but i will when i get an hdtv. Plus every sony system takes advantage of a different format and it works ( except in the case of umds).maybe sony should have sold the blue-ray seperately like MS did with the HD-DVD cuz the ps3 would have been way cheaper that way

if sony didn't go towards blue-ray alot of games would of been 4-5disc for only 1 game or maybe more.
Blu-ray might be outselling HD-DVD...but guess what
Â
Blu-ray + HD-DVD combined are outsold 12:1 by DVD and DVD sales are up 2% compared to this time last year. DVD is crushing HD because it's cheap and doesn't matter if you don't have a HDTV.
It's not like DVD replacing VHS...over 90% of the world doesn't care at this point and when they do...like others have said...we'll be on the "next-next gen" platforms.
As for the extra space, HD-DVD now as tripple lawer for 51gig and really until PC users adopt something it won't matter. It will be like the 8-version of DVD we have...combo players that read and write both will rule the market and no one will care what media you have cause they will all work.
Â
Its still a new technology. When DVD came out, it was crazy expensive. Anyone remember $40 DVD discs that were just a movie and MAYBE a trailer?
Fact is Blue-Ray's are outselling HD-DVD. Blue-Ray's space is what is going to allow it to push forward.
I don't care much for the movie format just yet though. Given time, when I can get a HDTV, then I might consider it.
Besides, PS3 is right on target of where it should be. Now that there is ACTUALLY software flow, things should begin to pick up even more. Its already sold a Million units. Its not doing bad. Its hard to say Microsoft is in 1st right now because they have a year head start.
Microsoft is making a HUGE mistake with Zeypher. A $479? upgrade that only consists of HDMI cables, a bigger harddrive, and a fresh coat of paint? Where is the Wireless internet support? Where is the HD-DVD support for when the DVD discs start running out of room? Where is the improved backwards compatability? Better processor? Better cooling system? My opinion is that THIS will be the nail that turns the tide.  To me, a 360 owner, this is a BAD move. It screams fear to me.

Oh course it is outselling a newer more expensive format. There are still people who don't know what Blu Ray and HDDVD are. Don't you think that once the price of the technology comes down that people would say lets go to the new format. It happened with DVD and HD televisions. I don't know too many people who don't have at least one HD tv these days. More will have them eventually.
First and foremost the biggest culprit is the price. You can blame the price on the cell processor or the bluray drive. But including blu-ray probably brought some people into the fold too. The problem is $600 is just alot to get people to pay when you are trying to sell 100 million of them. As a mass market machine $600 is too much. But Blu-ray is catching on and when Pirates and Cars comes out on blu-ray it might actually sell some systems. You may laugh but the Pirates of the Carribean movies are ridiculously popular and I plan to pick up both of them myself.Â
It was just bad timing. The public was ready for a new PS system but isnt exactly ready for bluray yet. Whether Sony can hold out until the public is ready we'll have to wait and see.

Mainly because development for the GC wasn't as costly as PS2 and Xbox. And also, the DS and DS Lite have been doing outrageously well in terms of global sales.Â

Sony could have cheaped out and just made a console like the 360. I partially agree. The fact at hand is that Sony is thinking long term. I'll admit that things are a little rough around the edges right now, but to be fair, the system has only been out a few months. I don't think we can use a word like failure until three years from now. Again, let's wait and see how sales are in Europe, the reservations have been outstanding, and about 2 million PS3's will be sold over the course of the next week or so in Europe alone, that will help bring the next-gen numbers a little closer together. The PS3 is picking up steam....Â

guess what buddy?
the games ARE ON BD discs
we'll need the space, yes we will
Â
also when people really start buying hdtv's they'll want a hd player, cause dvd's don't look that good on hdtvs.
If you can get a game system/ hd movie player that's one less electronic item taking up space in your entertainment system.
Â
Anyways Blu-ray is actually doing good so far, they recently had a very sharp jump (PS3) in sales, and there are many movies coming out and many studios support BD. (Disney, Sony PIctures, etc etc)Â
The problem with the PS3 is it's a toy. A very expensive toy and they packed it full of bleeding edge hardware and that costs money.
Every 24 months hardware doubles in performance...forget PC's the PS1 to PS2 and the PS2 to PS3 are perfect examples of what happens in 6 years.
6 years from now new hardware will smoke the PS3 and if we stay on track that is around the same time the "format war" might be over and developers might be reaching the limits of the PS3. Problem is we didn't need it all last month. But that is when we paid a premium for it...we are not aging wine here...or are we?
Sony simply lost focus on what they were doing.
