Why is everyone here so concerned with who is going to win this "format war" ?

It seems to me that alot of people on this forum are only backing Blu-Ray because they have a corporate affiliation with Sony. No doubt it is the logical next-gen format, I can't help but feel that if Blu-Ray was not forced down people's throats in the guise of PS3 many people would not care.

I am sure alot of people's opinions of the HD-DVD format are driven by the fact that Microsoft have decided to release an HD-DVD add on for their console as an alternative media device. It is not an Xbox 360 standard.

I'm really not fussed with either, though I think that because most homes now have a dvd player, and to consumers, HD-DVD will be the next step only because they would be on famililar territory.

Universal announces over 100 movies for 2007, including the highly criticaly acclaimed "Children of Men"

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/pressrelease_universal2007hddvd.html

So much for "Bluray has won, Universal announces no new movies at CES"...

gizmo_logix

Although, I don't agree with the inflammatory nature of the thread title claiming instant victory. The 100 movie announcement from Universal was speculated even by the guys at avsforum and highdef digests during CES (I seem to remember reading this a couple weeks ago too). So, it was expected that Universal would wait until January/Febuary to annouce their movie list. Even after hearing whispers about this during CES I wondered what Columbia, TriStar, MGM, FOX, Lionsgate, Warner, Buena Vista, Paramount, HBO, New Line, Magnolia would release on Blu-ray in 2007? Maybe, just maybe, more than 100? Yeah, I think so too.

You make it sound as if Universal is the only studio releasing HD-DVD's in 2007. But anyway, all im pointing out is that the title of this thread was very dumb, and begging of self ownage..

I was addressing, "Universal announces over 100 movies for 2007." Universal being the only one that release for only hd dvd. That's all. If you had stated the other studios. -- even the ones that make for hd dvd -- well, that adds to blu-ray too. So, I don't think you'd want to say that in your post with the Uni announcement. I agree the thread title is misleading. Just like "the PS3 is dead" threads.

Ok, but why mention Warner, Paramount, HBO, New Line, and Magnolia when they support HD-DVD as well? And its not just Universal which is exclusive, there is also The Weinstein Co. and Studio Canal in Europe.

Studio Canal is huge, with over 5000 releases in Europe.

You can get Rambo, Rambo 2, Rambo 3, Terminator, Basic Instinct, Total Recall, The Prestige, Point Blank, Saw, Saw 2, Underworld and many more so called "Bluray exclusives" for HD-DVD right now...

Because you left that part out. By all means. Please...keep talking about "Warner, Paramount, HBO, New Line, and Magnolia." It doesn't hurt Blu-ray. :D Or rather, Blu-ray gets ahead. And hd dvd hangs on for now. Oh, and you better check that list of yours... Just casually glancing at those that you listed...Basic Instinct 2 and Underworld is Sony Pictures. Not sure about the others. But I can't find them. The only part of "get them NOW" that's right is if you are taking about Blu-ray! As in get them NOW on amazon.com and dvdempire.com. Not so for hd dvd. Check yourself. re: Rambo, Rambo 2, Rambo 3, Terminator, Total Recall, The Prestige, Saw, Saw 2

So i was wrong...Underworld is not yet available for HD-DVD,  but its coming...

[QUOTE="choasgod"]

[QUOTE="onemic"]of course 360 trolls are going to come in and try to say that this isn't true by posting info that talks about how HD-DVD was selling more than blu-ray and then say that the only reason why sony has that many partners is because they're close friends with them. onemic

Unfortunatly Links like this beg to differ with any trolls that will try and argue differently ...

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=117

That's exactly what they argue against by posting a news article that talked about how great HD-DVD was back in 2006 and how it was surpassing blu-ray in sales. It just makes me laugh. I especially laugh at all those who bought the HD-DVD add on. Now we all know that this is going to cost MS big time.

I wasn't about to buy the hd player for my 360. 200 bucks wasn't an investment I wanted to make in a hi-def player right now especially if the format isn't proven yet. At least with the PS3, the blu-ray player is included and also plays games, so it wouldn't have been a complete waste if hd had won out.

i know this topic has been the source of debate for a lot of people. i also realize that this is a topic of discussion for a bunch of fanboys who over emphasis anything and everything regarding their consoles and how important it really is. what seems obvious right now is a few things that are NEVER even mentioned on here, which kind of makes me wonder if i'm reading posts from 12 year olds who probably don't even know what HDMI stands for. most analysts predict this so called format war could take a very long time to finish. even some sony execs expect it to take a good three years before one format completely takes over, and some wonder if it will only be another format that lives on but doesn't become the norm (a la laserdisc). real reason being, the impact that dvd had on the average consumer. one of the main things that really changed with people when dvds began taking over and what helped it flourish so well was that we all started doing something not many actually did during vhs - we started buying! dvd sales soured far higher than vhs had ever reached and the best result of this is something many of you may not remember - rental chains such as blockbuster no longer had the availability before the consumer. in other words, when movies were first released on vhs they were only made available to blockbuster and hollywood videos, and they would cost roughly $80 from the studio to purchase. they did this because so many people were renting at the time instead of buying, and studios made a far higher gross off of renters than selling directly to the consumer. when dvd was introduced, people began buying them and this took off like never before. the result hurt rental chains incredibly hard, causing most independantly owned business to shut down which is why you typically only see the giants still left, and how stores like walmart and best buy became as successful as they are today. why i mention this is simply because your average person has far more dvds in their collection than they ever had before with vhs. these our collections that won't easily be thrown out due to new technology. keep in mind that while dvd has been around for a good 8-10 years, but vhs was actually around and still carried in electronic and rental stores for a good 5-6 of those same years (some places still actually carry them to this day). because of this, blu-ray and hd-dvd have a much higher mountain to climb than any of you are even bothering to acknowledge with your ignorant remarks. hdtv's have to take over and sell millions and millions of more units (note how they keep pushing back the year when all broadcast channels must be hd ready - because it's taking far longer and more expensive than planned). after that, then they have to decide whether or not to actually bother and make the upgrade to hd-dvd or blu-ray. then and only then the real format war begins. do you see why this isn't a real war yet? do you see how it will likely take a couple more years before things really kick off? or are you still too damn stupid to fully comprehend what all needs to happen and how so many of you haven't an actual clue of what your talking about? it's not that i really care - just sick of reading the same thing over and over again from people that catch a news article and consider themselves intelligent on the matter.

DressYouUp
Well, when you have have over a million people with a PS3, you have to expect at least 75% of them will want to test the waters with a blu-ray movie just to see what all the fuss is about. That's a lot of potential movie buyers, and probably more than half of the blu-ray players out there are actually PS3s. I doubt many of the 360 owners want to put up the extra cash right now just to play an hd-movie when they can download them directly from x box live.

[QUOTE="jlabadie88"]I saw that too but I think they only announced no new titles for Q1. I think it'll pick up later this year.menduco76

haha its funny how little details can change the entire meaning of of a statement isnt it bro?

Nothing is decided yet anyway, because what it boils down to is not how many titles are released, but how much hardware is sold.  Discs are useless without hardware.  And at half the price with just as good performance (forget the smaller space, that is not important to most people) many people will go for hd dvd.  Besides, by the time blu ray comes down in price a bit, you will probably be able to get an hd dvd player for under $400.  Any sane person will pick that option...or wait even longer before buying either format.  But really, anything can happen as of right now.  People have to remember though the importance of pricing in these wars. This is far from over.

Your wrong. This ended along time before it even started. Blu-ray 50 gigs will become cheaper as newer and larger discs come out. HD-DVD will stay small and look more and more dated over time.

Does it really matter???  At the very same CES show LG showed off its Blue-Ray/ HD-DVD player.  So the "media war"  wasn't going to be that big of a deal.  Unlike in the past with VHS and BETA, you have the ability to buy a player that does both.

This is the end of the format war. Universal is the last exclusive supporter of HD DVD, and it anounced no titles whatsoever for the format at CES, where as every other movie studio anounced tons of titles for Blu-Ray, or for both formats, like the non-exclusive Warner Bros. and Paramount. Considering the fact that the exclusivity contract between Universal and Toshiba (HD DVD) runs out this month, it seems as if Universal is switching sides, or at least going neutral.

There were over 600 Blu-Ray titles anounced at CES, compared to a mere 200 HD DVD titles, and everyone of those titles were from either Warner Bros. or Paramount and were also anounced for Blu-Ray. HD DVD will recieve no exclusive content this year.

Many HD DVD diehards speculate that Universal is waiting to release its list of future titles at some later date, but considering the fact that it anounced loads of titles at last year's CES and that it has made absolutely no effort to renew the contract with Toshiba, it seems as if they have seen the light, and decided to maximize profits by switching to Blu-Ray.

This has saved us all from a horrible format war that initial seemed like it wouldn't end for years, but luckily, only a few early early adopters got cought up in the mess.

makingmusic476

Well Universal is still HD-DVD exclusive..

HD-DVD has gotten many exclusive movies this year...

Universal continues to announce new movies for HD-DVD every month..

You mean,  BD outsold HD-DVD 9:2 for the week ending March 18th?   CuzCasino Royale released March 13th,  and HD-DVD had no releases from March 9th to the like 24th.

Um....why excactly did you resurrect this ancient thread?  Universal is announcing movies again, yes, but at the time they had not, and they waited almost a month after CES before announcing anything at all.  Many HD DVD fans were very worried at the time.

Yeah, I admit i jumped the gun at the time, but many others did as well.  It still doesn't change the fact that Universal isn't announcing near as many titles as it could be, and the fact that all of its titles are old catalog titles that people won't feel like rebuying on HD DVD.  Have they had any good movies come out over the past few years besides Children of Men?

Most of the movies being bought in this war are new releases, as the upscaling abilities of the standalone players suite most people just fine for the DVDs they already own.  Just counting this year alone, Blu-Ray is getting big hitters like  Spider Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

You say Blu-Ray only outsold HD DVD by so much because its release schedule was better.  Well guess what, its release schedule will ALWAYS be better.

Did i ever say Universal was going neutral in that post?  No. I said that i had "jumped the gun" in my initial assessment of their possible format neutrality.

Universal is the sole HD DVD exclusive studio, so they are obligated to provide HD DVD with as many titles as they can to help ensure the format's success.

Does it matter that Fox may have a slow period of releases? No, because Disney, Sony, and Lionsgate will easily make up for that.

Why is it that HD DVD had no releases whatsoever for a full two weeks back in February.  If this keeps happening, it won't be good for HD DVD.  If Universal is simply unable to privode enough titles for HD DVD, then Blu-Ray's sales will lead will only increase from here on out, so it really doesn't matter how long Universal takes to go neutral.  Needless to say, you know Fox, Disney, etc. will not go neutral, as they are the ones getting the sales.

It'll have to beat normal DVD before its dominant though, which I hope doesn't happen for at least another 10 years. We had video for like 20 years, but we have only had DVD as a dominant format for a few years.
