Nothing wrong with The Departed there are tons of reviews on the film on BluRay all over the net, all played on Samsung BD players not a single freezing complaint. pimperjonesHmmm, well then it seems pretty obvious that it's a Blu-Ray specific problem. I guess there's a small chance that you got a defective disc but as other have said BluRay discs are pretty tough. If memory serves me correctly weren't there like a bunch of DVDs that the PS2 had a hard (or simply just couldn't) playing? I think it had something to do with the way they were encoded. Maybe it's a similar situation and I'd assume that Sony would do regular firmware updates to encompass new encoding methods, etc...

I have Saw 3, The Descent, Crank and The Departed. They ALL pause throughout themovie for me.
Hmm...I think you have to actually disable it in network settings. What I've been reading is that the PS3 is attempting to log in during Bluray playback and that is what's causing the freezing. (This is pertaining to a wi-fi connection. Not sure what the advice is if you're experiencing these problems on a wired connection)asmallchild
I spoke to a very nice gentleman at Sony Customer Service, and he said this is a firmware problem, and he promised it to be fixed in March. Do not worry. Your PS3 is fine, and it's not on it's way out.
Oh god. This is karma coming to bite me in the ass.
So I decided that I wanted to get a system with HD gaming/movies and had to choose between the Xbox360 and the PS3.
I opted for the PS3 as the Xbox360 was riddled with overheating/disc reading/scratching problems and the rumors of the new Zephyr box really turned me off. (Yes, it's a silly excuse. But if I shell out the dough, I want the best system that company has to offer for that particular generation)
So I got the PS3. Setup was a breeze. Gaming was fantastic (only have the Marvel game thus far). Bluray DVD playback with the HDMI cable was PHENOMENAL!
The one blip was that halfway through "The Departed", my PS3 froze for 5 seconds. It was completely unresponsive to any controller button mashing. After those 5 seconds though, I hit start and it was fine again.
I figured one blip was no small deal.
But when I tried finishing the movie today, it happened 5 times! All presenting with the same problem. Freezing with no response for 5 seconds. Hit start and then everything is fine again.
My question to all of you is this:
1) Is this a hardware problem? Do I need to return my PS3 for one that isn't faulty?
2) Is this a software problem? Is this just a growing pain that I have to live with until it's fixed by the next system update? (I've heard rumors that stated early patches of the PS3 firmware didn't really have smooth Bluray playback and it has been improved greatly since the release of the system)
Thanks so much for the help!
I've contacted Sony about this but I figure this is another great source of information.
