Capcom US has responded to CVG's report yesterday that PS3 Devil May Cry 4 forces gamers to sit through a mandatory 21 minute install time - with little improvement to load times there after.

Just to be sure, we timed the 5GB install process (which you can't opt-out of) on our PS3 retail version and it clocked in at 21 minutes, 41 seconds.

After installation, we timed DMC4's load times to be only one or two seconds shy of those in the 360 counterpart. Hardly worth sitting through 21 minutes of concept art, then.

Advertisement:Capcom community man Chris Kramer disagrees: "It's true: the first time you drop your DMC4 Blu-ray disc into your PS3 tray, you're going to be treated to an exciting 22 - 25 minute load process as the disc spins a few gigs of data onto your hard drive," he admits.

"If you don't want to watch the 'Previously, on Devil May Cry...' portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back," Kramer joked. "You're going to be spending some serious time with this game, and we don't want you going hungry. Low blood sugar will make you dizzy and you'll need to be focused like an Alan Parsons Project to defeat the enemies in this game.

"Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes," the Capcom man continues, possibly shuffling the install-less yet basically identical 360 version out of view.

"Installing on a console may seem like a weird idea, but there's a real benefit," says Kramer.

"Once installed," he claims, "the PS3 version of the game has near-Super Nintendo speed load times. You'll be amazed how fast levels load, the virtually instantaneous transition from cut scenes to action and that you're continuously playing the game."

We're a good few hours into both versions and the load times on the PS3 version are a few seconds shorter than the 360 cousin at best. They're definitely no way near "Super Nintendo speed".

DMC4 is out on Friday. And it'll cost you an extra £10 on PS3. Check online stores for the best deal. Either way, it's still a great game - look out for the review tomorrow.

Hahahaha... I knew it!!! I KNEW IT!!!

I knew that the reason to bash the PS3 version was gonna be the full install thingy. Haven't checked GS yet, but something tells me that they're gonna walk that way too.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

Why is 21 min such a big deal? Sure it's not the ideal situation but is it worth making a big deal out of it?

I don't get what the big deal is either. We've waited 2 years, and suddenly 20 more minutes is gonna kill you? Some people are just moronic, that's all.

The mandatory install thing is BS - it should only pre-load a level or two and while playing it could keep pre-loading. What if you have 95% full HD (later down the road for most people) - are you going to have to delete stuff because of this crap

Or you can delete the install data when you're not playing DMC4 anymore and only install it when you want to start it up again.

Because their mommies ran to them as soon as they started to cry when they were kids... now they want that.

Well, if you had to pick between two versions of a game, one of which made you sit through 21 minutes of nothing in order to play. And the other doesn't make you sit through anything to play, which would you choose?

1) Would still force you to delete stuff of the HD prior to playing

2) You seriously suggesting a 21 min install every time someone wanted to play the game....

I am all for the option of pre-loading, but suggesting two things 1) It shouldn't be mandatory - it should be an option. They don't have it for the 360 so it should be an added thing on the PS3 not an alternate. 2) Why not just preload based on where you are in the game....while you are playing

I don't understand what the big deal is. You had to wait for Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank to install. I guess no one has ever installed a Pc game or software before.

Taking 5 gigs of memory is what I'd have a problem with, I've never played DMC, so I guess I can wait a couple years.

5 gigs is a hefty price to pay. Especially since deleting it means another 21 minute wait when you want to play it again. As for gameplay? Devil May Cry is a series that seriously disappointed me. I think its barely worth an 8.0 overall.

Did we buy a PC? And as vege said a forced 5gb install is alot. For those that bought the 20gb (and people did) that is more than 25% (since 20gb is not available). If games starts making this standard then people could have 3-4 games "ready" to play - or have to wait 20 freaking minutes everytime they wanted to play it.

You have to admit that making it mandatory is a stupid move - the option is very nice, but that isn't how they set it up.

Yep, I bought the 5th anniversary pack in November because I'd never played them before. What disappointed me is just the pure button mashing combo system and repetitive enemies. The first game had 0 story ("I should have been the one to turn your dark soul to LIIIGGGHHHTTT!!!" anybody?) and I never felt like I was doing anything but button mashing my way through endless hoards of possessed puppets. I play DMC4 and its more of the same combo system. The graphics are nicer, but I don't feel like DMC is a series worth alot of its praise.

Well, IMHO DMC has never been much about the story but about the gameplay.

So if you think it's just button mashing, it only tells me that you're missing some of the points of the gameplay like the stylish combos. Also the difficulty, as DMC is no game for casual gamers who get frustrated with games like these.

Now, you may say it's full of crap and all, and I respect your opinion if you didn't really liked the series, but please don't talk about disappointment when you have an Advent Children avatar. Sorry.

Jesus people, calm down. Yeah it's a lot of room, but the game should be worth it. Start the install, flip on HDNet (or whatever you want to watch), and come back in 20 minutes.

I never said the series was crap (outside of 2, which I never finished...too horrible). I said it wasn't deserving of 8.5-ish ratings. And we all know Advent Children was the best CG movie to come out in recent memory :P

Well whatever your lasting time is (40, 10, 3 mins) make sure you time your event at 20 minutes (because of install of course). Put a clock next to you while you're doing ur thing. As soon as you come up on 19 minutes, finish up and go play the game.

My motto: If 20 is enough, be the man that can go 40.

Words to live by amirite?

On topic: I like the idea of watching TV over going for sex. Come on...or better yet, I'll throw on the 360 and play an arcade game. I haven't decided which version I want to buy yet. The 360 demo was awkward...but it has the achievements that I kind of like...

No no, DMC4 is smooth. I played the 360 demo and it was a tad awkward but its a different scheme (why they didn't use the triggers for guns/swords is beyond me...that is the way I would have done it.)

My issue is simply, if I have to install 5Gb of data, then why should I need the disc?

Many PS3 games still only use up to 8.4 Gb of space (equal to a dual layer DVD-Rom).

[QUOTE="silver2kone"]Big deal... start the install... go have some sex with ur girl and by the time ur done, ur'll have a clear head (pun intended) to play this game. In the mean time, she can be sleeping or doing something elseTheSystemLord1

Chances ares, people how complain about a 21m install don't really have girlfriends.

hahaha both of you are ridiculous. I can play too. If it takes you 20 minutes to have sex with your girl then you really shouldn't have a girlfriend.

Let's be honest here. Some of y'all can have sex during the cut-scene, and be done B4 the game actually starts. :D

My issue is simply, if I have to install 5Gb of data, then why should I need the disc?

Many PS3 games still only use up to 8.4 Gb of space (equal to a dual layer DVD-Rom).

Faster load times. Me personally, I don't care. I played Devil May Cry a little, didn't get into it. Haven't played it since. It's one of those series I just never really could get into.

During install times/massive load times I watch TV. I have been since the PS2 days.

I don't get what the big deal is either. We've waited 2 years, and suddenly 20 more minutes is gonna kill you? Some people are just moronic, that's all.C-Himura

Some people just can't read (not just you - lots of them in this thread). The load time - once isn't an issue. It is that 1) they take up 5gb - so what the next developer says hey I am going to take up 10gb and it will take 30 min the first time and the next guy says well maybe I should use 20gb..... Where is it not acceptable? Where do you realize that them doing tihs will fill up your hd and when you decide to play a game for an hour or so you first have to do an install, because you were forced to delete the file.....

Once again - maybe someone reads it this time - why isn't the preloading an OPTION - get it???

I read you the first time. You at least have some points to back up your argument, but most people just complain for the sake of complaining. Those are the moronic ones. Personally, for me is not an issue cause I don't have anything on my drive. My movies, music and videos, that's why I have my computer for. And do think about it, if you really want to, you can upgrade your hard drive if you want, and hard drives ain't that expensive now at days. If you already bought a 500 console, I am sure a decent 150 dollar hard drive should be no sweat.

It's a shame there is no option to opt-out. That really is a phenomenally stupid design decision.

I find it amusing how some people like to dismiss the benfit of installing, if only because the PS3 owners are getting the benefit. I''m positive that these same tards were the ones praising the original Xbox's ability to do just that.
