Cliffy B calls Metal Gear Solid "Passive Entertainment"

"Cliff Bleszinski, lead game designer of Gears of War 2, cites Metal Gear Solid as the kind of game Epic doesn't want to make. What were his exact words? Read on to find out.

In a recent interview with IGN, CliffyB was quoted in saying the following:

"Metal Gear Solid is our example of the game we're not doing. Passive entertainment is on its way out."

The story itself is just IGN's preview of Gears multiplayer, which is interesting, but CliffyB's quote kinda came out of nowhere. Am I sensationalizing this, or did CliffyB just totally dis Metal Gear Solid?"

Metal Gear Solid is definetly the sort of game Cliffy Bee doesnt want to/cant make. Incredible storyline, detail on all levels of gameplay, & perfect controls. All things Gears fails at. Sorry, ive tried playing Gears, but if i wanted a migrain enduced trip covered in blood, id go boxing with Muhammad Ali while having a killer hangover.

I just do not understand why people play gears. not only do the controls stink so bad, but the cover system gets in the way wayyyyy too many times to be called good. Online is ok, but its gets old, fast. And if u want to kill someone on there, all you need to do is aim in that quadrant that theyre in and bam, theyre dead. Gears of war is on par with Resistance FOM in my opinion. And thats not a compliment.

I agree, Gerars in just another brainless shooter much like those we got 20 years ago, saying games like MGS4 are on their way out is like saying video games will never be anything other then random killing and insane amounts of gore... In other words its like saying it fails as being a true media form...

I haven't heard much about gears, but coming from someone with a gears .gif AND a mgs4 .gif in his sig, it's hard to tell if you're bias towards one game or not.
I never thought the cover system would work too well online anyways. It seems like everyone would just hide and wait for someone to pop out and then gunrape them. Either way, both these games seem to be good on each of their systems, and ultimately if you like it then play it.

But everyone's gotta agree, that was a lame cheap shot from Cliffy B. MGS4 is an outstanding achievement and I dunno, he should've at least recognized that it's a great game in a different form from which he isn't creating (I couldn't say the S word...) whether he wants to make it or not. Developers shouldn't run eachother down, it only hurts their overall image.

Why doesn't he come up with a game that doesn't just rely soly on ridiculous violence, and then if it scores a 10 from multiple sites he can judge MR. Kojima's masterpiece.

This is strange. I wouldn't call it "dissing", at least not on the entire MGS entity, because in the bonus disc that come with the limited edition of MGS4 theres an interview of him praising the work behind the game. I guess its just because all of 'us' have been comparing gears and MGS a lot, and this is his form of rebellion or something.

rule of thumb if your talking about another console or game on another console and especially if your comparing two games on different consoles it doesn't belong in this forum ps3 related discussions only and this thread is a prime example of why that rule is in place.

Personally me I hate the fact that there's a lot of fan boys sticking with their systems. Just be a gamer and accept things being said. For all the haters out there reading this. Gears of War is an amazing game far better than halo and all other shooters. A lot of ppl hate it because of the fact of they aren't good at it. Gears of War 2 will be even MORE amazing. HOWEVER. Cliffy B has no right to talk about MGS series. The whole series is just wow. No words can describe it. And with MGS4 just releasing it's gonna be really hard for ppl trying to top that. Cliffy sounds like he's getting a little cocky. I think what he means by passive gaming is gaming that you actually have to have an attention span to play. He is going to make another twitchy headshot experience (which is fun, don't get me wrong) for people with ADD. Even UT isn't as fun anymore in the face of better games like COD4. I wonder what he thinks about COD4.

He's probably chapped that Gears 2 clocking in at 4 hours or whatever including cliche storyline will seem really short next to MGS. He needn't worry anyway, even if hardcore gamers gave up on him the hype and the mouthbreathers would save him.

I have nothing against Gears of War. But to make a blatant attack against MGS4 simply shows that he fears it. Obviously the millions that bought MGS4 would have to disagree that "Passive Entertainment" is on it's way out. Not to mention MGS4 showed that it could provide better entertainment than a Hollywood movie. Oh well Cliffy B can drown in the success of MGS4. Yeah, I just don't understand why he would say that. MGS just sold a ton of copies on a system people legitimately thought would fail. It's doing incredibly well. What would prompt him to say games like MGS are on their way out? Obviously sales disagree with him, does he think that passive entertainment will die out after MGS4? Like Gears will come out and people will wake up from a stupor like "whoa did I actually like passive entertainment? Cliffy was right, bring on the power tools!"

Nothing against the guy as a dev, Unreal Tourney and Gears are two of the best shooter experiences available anywhere (even though Unreal is a huge Quake clone, really), but once again these devs should just shut their mouths and focus on their own work. I still think less of Gabe and Valve because of all the biased crap thats come from their camp.

Better than Halo? Sure. Better than all other shooters? Naw. It's a very novel concept, but it doesn't translate into fair and balanced fights like COD4 or Warhawk. The style makes up for the lapses in substance though. No denying it, Gears is a great series. I think it's one of the only 360 ones that gets universal respect, even from huge Sony fanboys. Who doesn't like chainsaws?

I wouldn't say Gears is out of Kojima's league. I could quite easily see Kojima making a game with gunplay just as good as Gears, but putting a better story inside of it. It probably wouldn't be as bloody though.

I think as a game MGS3 was beyond Gears with it's sneaking, ijury healing, food obtaining gameplay, as well as the story, and MGS4, is just on another planet altogether.

oh and i would say mindless shootin with no story are on their way out, and i mean it not just for gears, also halo, resistance(i liked it though) cod4, had an entertainin story, killzone, cmon, all of those, have none to little story, and i find it sad when a devs says i dont want to make a game like that, like that?? how?? great graphics?? great story?? great controls? u can play fps or stealth or 3d person shooter(there u go 3 games in one)
