Isn't it a whole lot better to have more than you need, instead of not enough?

Plus, if you download HD movies as well as full games such as SOCOM from the store, that 80GB will fill up pretty quickly.

actually yeah. i'm currently using about 45gb w/ videos, demos, and full games such as warhawk and pain. don't forget installs for games such as MGS4. overall it's better to be safe than sorry so sony was smart by giving us this size HD.

I thought when I bought my 60 GB PS3 that I would never use that much space. After one year it was over half full, and I popped in a 320GB HDD.

You will need more than that, developers seem to love putting sh!t in our hard drives. Games like MGS4, Devil May Cry 4, GTA 4 and Bioshock take at least 4.5 GB EACH ONE, thats around 18 GB in 4 games!!! that sucks so hard man!! I have like 40 PS2 games but that dumb hard drive feature is going to stop me from buying even the half of that.

Also, every game has an update every once in a while, there's also Download Content and Firmware updates.

I own a 40gb PS3 with an attached 750gig external hard-drive. Is 80gb unnessisary? no way. ive already filled about 20gig of my PS3's hard-drive with game saves and installs alone. I have about 200gig of movies and music vids on my external hard-drive and am always adding more.

The amount of space which come on my PS3 was never a big deal coz from day 1 i knew id b attaching an external hdd 2 it.

well, I have to have a few games installed at a time, plus about 3GB worth of rock band downloads, lots of hi-def videos, a music collection to play in games with custom soundtracks (mostly burnout and wipeout), several demos and lots of downloaded games and I'm down to under 10GB on my 60GB.

I'd want to buy a bigger hard drive if I was going to start using the PSN Video Store at all or buy big games like Siren.

Um well you can put a ton of other stuff on it: music, videos, etc. I put a 100 gb hdd in mine and have about 10 gbs of music, 10 gbs of games and demos, 4 gbs of game installs (MGS4) and some other various stuff on there. I keep videos on an externallhdd connected to my ps3, but if I put it on there directly it'd take up another 25 gbs or so. So it can fill up fast. Plus if you dl a lot of games of the psn, or if you have a lot of games that install to the hdd, that space can be eaten up fast.

Your complaining about too much space? seriously? How does having extra Hard Drive space affect you. For Sony its more expensive to invest in 20/40/60 GB hard drives, because they're dieing sizes, as in all laptops now are offering atleast 80GB. So if you think Sony can sell a smaller hard drive for cheaper thats not the case. But if thats not why your concerned, then WHY are you complaining, because other than the reasoning i just gave there can't be a logical reason to complain about too much hard drive space.

And matter of fact, yes everyone needs more space, b/c people install games, listen to music, watch videos, on their ps3's ... i have to keep deleting and filtering things on my 60GB cause it is always full, I'm just waiting for the right time to invest in an upgrade.

Dude, you can never had too mush space. I bought a 40gb, not knowing that the 80gb would be released a month or so later:| i've got about 9gb left, with game installs, music, and a few movies, going to upgrade to a 320gb as soon as my cash flow allows it lol

80 Gb isent enough. Even though it says 80 gb when you go look at the system information you only really have 74 gb because it has to remember its back up information incase that you ever wipe it clean, so it can reinstale its self. I only have 2 games and i already only have 54 Gb left.

I have 10 gigs left but thats because I rarely delete stuff (demoes, music, videos...expired videos, lol). I already have 3 gigs worth of Rock band songs. I don't have any games that make you install it either...I'm scared to imagine if I did.

At the moment, no. ps3's only take 2.5" SATA drives - notebook hard drives. So until there is a 1TB hard drive in this form factor, no.

Lol, then you're not like the rest of us who are real gamers. When I still had my 60GB HDD in my 60GB PS3 I had basically 2 gigs left and I was screwed and couldn't buy anything from the PSN Store nor install games that need doing it. I went and bought 3 320GB HDDs and all my PS3s are happy now. Trust me, for those who play real games, and which most games need to install before you play, you'll need it.

all you need is a SATA 2.5 in 5400rpm (7200 is okay though) with at least and 8mb cache... you can get a 250gb for about 80 bucks.

Of course you need it! Well you will if you want to get more games.
I have a 40 GB (I got it way cheap and thought to myself I won't need most of it) I've had it since the 25th of December 2007, which was last year, I have 5 games and two demos and only have 17GB left.
I'm going to have to delete all the installations of some of the games I play and every time I go to play Assassin's Creed or Resistance: Fall of Man I will need to wait up to 20 mins hehe.
But that's OK because the new games I'm getting from now 'till the end of next year are... Resistance 2, Infamous, Ratchet & Clank (2009 Unnamed Title) and Prototype.

Also... how do you get more memory? If I bought some off Ebay... would I need like a technician to put it in or can it just plug in or something like that? I'm confuzzled :P

my 1 tb in pc is filled up so fast now i need to buy more in a month or so, i have like 60 gb in ps3 but hdd is kinda empty only has msg4 and gta4 and other games, once i start to copy crap music and video in it, it will be gone very fast.
