do Component cables carry both audio and video if I put them into a hdtv or only video

Component cables have five output jacks. Three for video (blue, green and red) and two for audio (red and white).

When you have connected the ps3 to the tv with the component cables, it will still be relaying in sd. Go to display settings and choose component; then, choose all the different outputs your tv can handle (ex. 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) and make sure they work by sampling them (press O if its just black or do nothing). It should be straight forward from there.
