well i finally plugged in my component video to my HD-tv and i have to say wow what a let down.

it lets you view the menu at full screen 16:9 but when you play games it makes it into 4:3.

I tried this with tekken - nevermind it also looks like crap on HDtv too :(

and its stupid - even with my zoom there are still boxes around the top and bottom and to the left and right.

as my gf said - wtf are you buying video cables for the tv when its a portable system!

haha i have to agree with her fully -

going back to the store tomorrow - UNless you guys can convince me otherwise!

I have to agree as well. Playing the PSP on my HDTV is a big letdown. It looks like total crap on it. I guess if I had an SDTV, it would look like the quality you see on the actual PSP screen.

I agree with your gf. I didn't see the point of Sony adding that function to the PSP---it's a portable device! :) Bu toh well... guess they needed something else to justify making a "new" psp.

Um, is that the only problem with them? Is the signal good? Remember, PSP games will probably look worse than PS2 games on an HDTV... so you can't be expecting too much from them.

And you guys who are saying it looks horrible: try standing 20 feet away from your TV. Remember, if you stuck your PSP screen right next to your face the games would look pretty bad too...

20 feet? My goodness. I probably have a 3-4 foot distance I can go away from my tv. You must live in some big home. Besides, do they even make 20 feet long component cables for the psp yet? Longest I've seen so far was 9.

You can also use the PSP to play movies on the TV. Those come out at full resolution (I think).

harold and kumar is a near perfect transfer with the extra features too, not sure if its all the extra features or not but the color and resolution are great, every umd should look like that, slight catch is that the black level is so crisp the psp ghosting is a more noticable, and i think another good one would be wedding crashers although i didnt like the movie all that much, i borrowed the umd from a friend and it was just a great transfer from dvd to umd

I hate people that complain about the video output. It's not supposed to make your PSP games look HD I hope you all know. It's upscaling, so to expect something to look perfect on your TV when you're outputting it, it's not gonna look the best. I'm thinking they did it more for the movies than games, and the movies look great on it, so job well done, Sony.

I'm hoping a firmware update will allow us to zoom and stretch and whatnot, because I'm not unhappy with the quality of the image, I just wish I could make it fullscreen.

that's the problem, not many SD tv's have component inputs....

I understand the point in this... but I don't understand why Sony would use component cables for the PSP when it's noteven close toHD resolution or quality...and it doesn't go to 16:9 anyway with the component cables, so I see no point. Why not just use Composite AV (yellow, white, red) so we could view it on a SD tv where'd it'd look more normal. My original Xbox doesn't look to good on my HD TV, so a PSP is obviously going to look worse than that.

They use component cables because the signal is progressive. Composite cables don't support progressive.

I just bought these today but I can't seem to get them working. I have an SDTV and I can play the audio fine, but I can't find out where to plug the video. I'm not sure if my TV has them, but my DVD player has "component out" on the back and has holes that are the same color as the plugs, but when I plug them in it just sits there on my dvd menu. I'm really bad at stuff like this, so any help would be appreciated.

For me, quality isnt a concern. As long as its decent and easy to see, its fine. The reason why it sucks, is because of the resolution. Its basically just this box in the middle of the screen. Since upscaling requires more processing power, Sony wanted to save some money, and just left it the way it is.

I think there are cool applications for this. The video output is not only for games but for movies as well. I travel now and then for my job and I don't want to be carrying around my xbox or ps3. This option is pretty cool because you can play on the plane or airport, then when you get to your hotel you can hook up your psp to the tv and use it as a dvd player. Then if you get tired of looking at that little screen you can play your games on a bigger screen. It's not the best picture but if you're in a hotel room with nothing to do, it's better than nothing. Not only that, I think they will come out with an update to make the output video look better.

At least you have video output with the slim psp. I love my psp-fat, it works great for me, and I use it all the time. Unfortunately, I just bought a nice pair of video goggles (little video screens you wear like a pair of glasses and it 'projects' the image of a big ol screen. unfortunately, I cant use them with my psp. It would be nice to be able to wear them, and play games without having to hold the psp up to my eyes. It is uncomfortable, and I cant play games for more than an hour without getting elbow cramps! :)

Anyone know of a device to add video output to the old psp-fat version?

I really do not know why you are having so much trouble and poor quality. I have not experienced that so far. Game is 100 times bigger then on my psp and the graphics are awesome. Maybe there is something else you need to do for better a picture?

If you can return yours, go for it. I'm gonna try to sell mine, but it will be really difficult since not much people I know have a slim or an HDTV

I thought the feature was fine, but then my tv upscales the picture completely, and I didn't expect the games to look particularly good on a big screen. Although I found multiplayer tekken to be pretty good, since it is just like playing on the ps2 (both people can look at one screen).

I know it seems like Sony was being cheap by not "fully" implementing the video out feature. But I would be willing to bet, this in game letter-boxing is due to a technical reason. Specifically, upscaling is the culprit. The psp runs at 480x272, while 480i/p runs at 640x480. When in the XMB, the psp has spare power to upscale. But this can't be done during a game since it would impact the game's performance. A similar reason related to interlaced vs progressive would explain why composite cables do not allow video game out. In order to get around this, sony would have to add an extra piece of hardware to upscale the video output. And this would of course cost money, boosting the slim's price.

However, I heard that the 3000 does not letter-box video game output or allows video game output on composite cables, or both (perhaps this has been confirmed?). If so, this would suggest that Sony was able to work out the pricing on the extra hardware.

Now I can't prove my idea, but I think it would be the most logical explanation for what would otherwise seem to be a ridiculous oversight.
