Sega failed because every 2 years they released a console, They also tryed console add-ons(which always fail) Also, The PspGO hasn't failed Sony knew it wasn't going to be popular... its only avaible in the U.S anyways... Oh..., And you do know Sony is more then a video game company right? Columbia pictures says hi.

Warranty work is not free so both companies probably take a loss on their consoles but I don't see either going the way of Sega.

Sega's problem was marketing. The Saturn was superior hardware to the Playstation and N64. Also, the Dreamcast was superior to the PS2,Xbox, and Gamecube.

Not the Xbox, and wow the dreamcast actually sold well. Its doing better then what the ps3 did in 2 years. Check it out.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast

Edit: The dream is even weaker then the gamecube. Dream cast media format holds only 1.2GBs

True, Just from what the sources say. The DreamCast was out selling Nintendo but it died as soon as the Juggernaunt know as the Ps2 came out.

Never. Sony isn't just a video game company it sells everything when it comes to electronics like those nice Bravia TV's Sega was just a video game company. Sony actually has a lot of people backing their product unlike Sega with the Dreamcast. The problem with Sony is figuring out how to make the PS3 a profit. The low sales are attribute to the April drought, watch how the Summer leading to Christmas time lead to better sales, not just for Sony, but for all Video Game companies.

That's what was said about AIG, Lehman Bros., Goldman Sachs... Need I go on? ;) Nobody is "too big" to fail. they might be large enough to absorb and bear down for releasing a failed product (like intel did during the Pentium4 days), but the credit crunch and market collapses have pretty much proven that nobody is vulnerable to failure anymore. The only thing that must be questioned now is... if one of these companies does fail, what about those games purchased through download? Will we still be able to play them?

No, there losses are lessening greatly as thetechnology gets more affordable for what they put into the consoles. They actually profitted greatly in the fourth quarter last year and are expecting to be overall in the profit in 2010.

Playstation will not go the route of Sega.

Last year Sony made $30.5 billion in equity, I don't think it's in any danger for the few million is losing from the ps3, since it is one of the biggest multinational media conglomerates.

2 years o being down. god i would link you to the n4g.com article that said that ps3 might not be loosing with cost nemore because they cut cost with a smaller gpu,but n4g gave me a virus so i don't want to give ne1 else that.

seriously don't panic. sony is hitting its stride now. sony is still selling pretty good in eu anis the king of next gen consoles in jp.

geez this sounds like sw talk...i'm going to get out of here

No. Sony had a slow start but they have been picking up a lot, and as far as the amount of hardware sales, I would be willing to bet that by the end of the "race" Sony will have won or at LEAST tied MS. Nintendo did not fail after the Gamecube, they came back and took first spot this gen by a mile (even if I don't approve of their method lol). And besides that, Wasn't the latest on their financial stance saying that the PS3 is actually the product that is doing so well for Sony?

Sony has done so much better than Sega... especially with the PS2, and PS3 is finally selling decently and Sony can finally make a profit with the Slim. They can't fail as bad as Sega..

No, PS3 is selling at a profit now and although the PSPgo was a fail I don't think that's a major concern. This isn't 2006 anymore dude, the games aren't selling as well? What?

Also, Sony is far larger than just it's gaming division, it will never be like Sega because it was never LIKE Sega in the first place.

No, Sony is a huge company and makes more than games. The PS3 also wasn't a failure by any stretch, it took losses when it first came out, but now they lose very little on each system and they break even if you buy some games.

Those losses are decreasing by a lot every year. Did you know MS was never profitable with the original xbox? Yep they did not make a single $1 in the black with the original xbox.

Not gonna happen ever..Microsoft was in the same predicament last console cycle and look how this gen they dug themselves out with a very profitable console. Sony would never go third party. Now if they fail two console gens, then I think you'll see them rethinking their investment in the gaming business.

one of the reasons why sega was out because it didnt have dvd compatibilty, its a great system but when the ps2 came out it took it out because its performance, look at the ps3 it has blu ray, dlc, free psn, it can only do everything.

I would love to know where are this allegations coming from.. The PlayStation brand had been going on for how long worldwide?

Since 1995. PS1 had made over 100 millions console sales, PS2 made 140 millions and PS3 is currently, approximately at 37 Millions and growing at it's 3 and half years on the market.

Who is not to say it won't reach the same or close numbers as previous installations once the life cycle is over? Is that bad number? Is that not possible with the current sales moments PS3 has, outselling it's previous three years with PS3 Slim price drop and excellent exclusives that continue being released which are not the only factor is healthy sales by the way.

To many assumptions TC.. No backups, no proofs, no data. Only wild speculations. You have no idea why Sega failed and your outrageous and inaccurate statement and comparison to PlayStation 3 only profs that point.

On the PS3 Sony's cash flow will most likely, MOST LIKELY, go in the positive - meaning its cash in is greater than its cash out and it profited. These guys knew they were going to lose quite a bit of money when the console was released and throughout its first few years of life, but there is no way you take a risk on a console without knowing full well you will profit in the end. Sony most definitely will not fail, they can absorb a lot of the damage until cash spent turns into cash gained.

It would be kind of interesting if they dropped the price again to 250 with the new chipset models being made. I wonder if it would make their sales sky rocket. Probably would be smarter to wait for christmas.

Sony is currently restructuring and has lost money the last few years. Their 2008 to 2009 fiscal year (ends March 31) they lost just under $3billion dollars US. Their 2009 to 2010 fiscal year they made about a $500 million in profit (from heavy cuts to their company and employees). They are forecasting about $500 million for profit for the 2010-2011 FY. For three years they are down $2 billion if they hit their forecast for March 2011.

Sony has struggled with all of its competitors for years. Apple took over their handheld market. Their cameras have fallen from popularity to Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Kodak. Their HDTV market has been hammered by Samsung (unknown a few years ago) and the low end brands like Vizio. They haven't been dominant in the Home Theater arena for a very long time. MS and Nintendo took their gaming business. They are a nothing in the cell phone business. The movie industry is declining and hoping 3D gives it a boast. Music purchases are down from years past. On top of their problems, their currency has been getting killed and costing them more money. They move a lot of product ($82 Billion or so this year) to make very little money.

I am not saying Sony is going to fail. Gaming has been their one area of profit. Gaming has kept the rest of their company afloat for a long time. I have read articles that the company should be broken up into smaller companies so it can be managed more effectively. No one knows what will happen. Blu-Ray is a huge positive for Sony going forward. They are trying to create an online store for music, movies and books to rival Apple. Sony is going through a tough time but they should recover. Stringer was brought in to clean up the mess they were in. He has helped a lot but they have a long way to go to get back to their glory days. Sony cannot afford to make anymore large mistakes.

Sega just walked off the cliff, while Sony has made some bonehead moves i.e. $600 console even before you get a game; but I don't see them making mistakes the caliber of what Sega did.
