i suddenly got an urge to buy a ps3, but i did not. yet. but i dont know if i should, since i already have a 360, and with games being available to both the xbox and ps3, i would go for the achivements, but then there are games like resistance and motorstorm,, cant think of many more atm.. but yea... would a ps3 be a good buy if i could get the games for the 360 with achivements? also, what are some future fps's for the ps3, since that is what im mostly into.

Guy, these questions on whether you should get one are questions you should be asking yourself. As for the games just look them up I mean we're on a game site.

I never truly understood achievements. In a way it seems to be forcing people to play with a reward of a point system.

And if the game isn't fun why should people play?

Obviously your right and you dont get achivements. :)
They are very very good, and add replay value to games unendlessly, and are fun and rewarding to get. Hell, if it  wasnt for them i wouldnt have played R6 on realistic all the way through, or played so many games on gears of war, or killed 10,000 zombies on dead rising. They are very good :)

Baron, instead of looking at the games that will be on both platforms, look at the ones that will only be on the PS3. If you see enough of those that to you warrants the purchase then go for it.

Really? a number on your gamertag makes u want to play more? I dont strive to be the best in video games. The achievements only work because of people like you who care so much about points that they waste time on games. I agree with Untold if i play a game it is going to be because it is fun not because of achievements.

I say why not? The ps3 will have some good games for sure that you won't get anywhere else. Off topic... What's up with the big avatars? is that only happening on my screen?

People shouldn't... some people make a bigger deal of it than it is, but it's just a cool little way to keep track of how you're doing in a game, for developers to entice you to do certain things and to track your progress in a game. When done correctly, they're a checklist for seeing everything there is to see in a game and, IMO, that's a good thing. Sometimes it's just completely bungled though and they're just tedious stupid things.

I wouldn't buy a console for the sake of getting achievements, lol. I'm considering getting a PS3 just to have a Blu Ray player. Hence the topic of this nature that I made... wasn't so much of a "Is it good?" but rather is the Blu Ray player in the PS3 as crap as the DVD player in the PS2 was... but you can't really ask that without getting flamed or modded. Especially with the 360 gamertag in my sig it just looks like I'm being a fanboy idiot at that rate.

I dont get achievements either. You are saying that you would force yourself to play the worsest game in history just to have some gamerpoints? I play games that I like, I dont care about achievements, they dont unlock any extra feature in the game. Now, if they were used to unlock extra features in the game, like in King Kong (which has its own syistem of gamerpoints), then yes, since you unlock usable stuff.

Pretty sure the achievement system isn't patented by Microsoft. Sony is going to improve the Playstation Network and remember, it's free. Do what you want with your money. As of right now, there really isn't any software to warrant you running out and making the purchase. By the end of the year I think that statement won't be true anymore.

No, i dont play 'Worsest' Games for achivments. Im a recrational gamer, if its not fun i dont play it. Henz me stoping playing kameo after an hour in dispite the huge achivments it seemed to be spitting at me. Im saying it helps games that truely deserve to be explored to be explored. It doesnt warrent terrible games being played, except if your a gamerpoints nutcase, and they have their own problems to worry about.

ACHIEVEMENTS... wait a second.
I am absolutely a fan of rewards and goals.

That being said I just prefer the goal or reward to be something of value.

I'm playing Virtua Fighter 5. There is a fake series of arcades and fake tournaments in that game.
Winning the tournaments can yield you money which you can use to buy items/clothing to customize your character.

That makes perfect sense to me. I am working hard to get these little rewards.

However, if they changed around the game and removed the fake tournaments and reward system...

Then simply changed it over to this:
** Beat every virtua fighter 100 times to earn 100 ACHIEVEMENT points which do nothing in particular.

You know what? Screw that. I would probably tell them to go soak their heads in a bucket of water.

They are rewarding not in a material sence but in a Social and Personal sence. I mean, like if there wasnt an achivement to kill 57k zombies in Dead Rising and some1 did, what would they have to show for it? Nothing, the fact something congratulates you, and the whole world can see you were able to do something hard, its just a nice social reward

It sounds like its some kind of system for bragging rights.
Is that an incorrect presumption?

Regardless, I was never one to want to post my gaming exploits up to "impress the ladies".

I really see your point in all the things you've said, and the basic idea is right: You get rewarded for your efforts, and being rewarded and being able to show that off is a nice thing. I don't own a 360 and I haven't played enough on this system to give a great statement on the achievement system. But let me make a (maybe not so) far-fetched comparison to World of Warcraft. The game is fun, no doubt, and what makes it fun is that after "a lot of hard work" you get something out of it. Well, let me rephrase that: it was fun untill a certain point. After that, you realize that you're putting a lot of time and effort into rewards of a game that you've already played for far too long and you kinda wish that you'd have invested that time into new game experiences. So, in a nutshell: achievements are nice, as long as they are a firm part of the game and don't end up being too time consuming. Anything mmore than that and I'm not interested. ;)

Yea, well the highest out of 1,000 i have for a single game is 680 and thats gears of war. I dont put in the effort if the achievment isnt worth it (Like kill 10,000 people in online ranked. THATS CRAZY), But yeah u have em dead on, ur just a sensible person too!

I think achievments are great, and if you don't have a 360 and haven't experienced them you have no right to comment.

Now, to answer the orginal question, as a owner of the 360 and Ps3 I say get one. I got one because I love HD movies and wanted to try bluray out. Resistance is a great game but right now that is about it outside of multiplats that look better on the 360 but that will change next week and through the month of March as some good ps3 games come out. I can't wait for Motorstorm!!!

i hate achievements, ppl jus play xbox so much cuz they wanna have all the achievements meanwhile they dont even wanna play...keep in mind PS3 has achievements to but there in game there called XP points "experience points" in resistance for instance the more points u get u win new costumes n levels of military n awards, metals...etc. same **** ps3 online is better than xbox online to me personally...more simple, no fuss, easy to use...FREE

The PS3 is an awesome system I love mine and I still think I made the right choice. I personally like all of the new systems out right now... the are all fairly solid. The PS3 is expensive but very much worth the money. I plan on getting a 360 as well but that will most likely come when Halo 3 comes out :P but besides the point you will not go wrong with the PS3.

okay..i guess the achievement's point thing wouldnt work for me cuz i dont like tryin to get the best rank in games..i remember going to my friends house every day to see him on ratchet: deadlock all day and night tryin to get the number 1 rank in the game, i got tired of watching him try so i made my own profile and played the game about every other day for a week...and i gave up fast on that cuz that just isnt my thing...when i play online i like to play and have fun..i dont give a damn about my rank...and if those goons wanna kick me from the game cuz my rank isnt high enough for their standards then i jus play another game to have fun in....like wat the guy said about the VF5 thing...he gets money for winning, to buy costumes and other extras...now thas my style....not tryin to be the best..so i guess the achievements thing wouldnt work for me

i suddenly got an urge to buy a ps3, but i did not. yet. but i dont know if i should, since i already have a 360, and with games being available to both the xbox and ps3, i would go for the achivements, but then there are games like resistance and motorstorm,, cant think of many more atm.. but yea... would a ps3 be a good buy if i could get the games for the 360 with achivements? also, what are some future fps's for the ps3, since that is what im mostly into.baronOdoom
Don't fight it. It's less painful that way I've been told. As for PS3 FPS check out the PS3 games tab, you're in for a treat with PS3 FPSs.

to the topic creator: The Blu-Ray player in the ps3 is at the top of the spectrum among the rest of the players currently on the market. I've read a few reviews on that portion of the ps3 and they are all very positive and say that any "faults" it currently has can most likely be corrected in a firmware update.

I have both, I got the PS3 for the exclusives since I'm a big fan of FF, Metal Gear, God of War, Socom, etc. But if a game comes for both consoles, I prefer the 360.

I like the idea of having saomething more than a number as an acievemet, which is the thing that makes me say that achievements are useless. The fact that they dont show anything else than a number

[QUOTE="UntoldDreams"]I never truly understood achievements. In a way it seems to be forcing people to play with a reward of a point system.

And if the game isn't fun why should people play?

Generic_Dude

The blu ray player on the PS3 was rated the best on the market on cnet when the PS3 launched. There might be better ones coming out in the future.... but I can tell you that the quality of the blu ray player is excellent. With the blu ray controller, I can't figure how it could be any better actually. Blu rays + the gaming experience really make this an awesome system.

I'd get it anyways. I have both. I could careless of achievement points considering Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Devil May Cry 4, Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Gran Turismo 5. Plus the PlayStation Home sounds like it's going to be pretty cool.

A game like VF5 is the perfect example of a game that would really improve due to achievements/ entitlements, I love using Lei-Fei, and getting him to 10th Dan was a short term goal, achievements would entice me to use characters I normally wouldn't try, unlocking more and more stuff in the process. Meanwhile being able to show my friends what I've done in this otherwise single player game. Hopefully Home will add this.

I'm sort of in the same position as you. I'm thinking of picking up a PS3 today if they have any available. Resistance looks very tempting.

I think I'm going to change my mind and go down to game today and order one... At first I was going to wait until it was cheaper but today my 360 crashed for the 2nd time and I'm having it repaird again, I'm so angry... And if I trade in some older games and my PS2 I should have a the PS3 for under £250 so thats not too bad :) Now I just wish I hadn't bought that HD-DVD drive ( I got it only because I didn't plan on buying a PS3 at launch).

Any games I MUST buy? Resistance and maybe Motorstorm or F1... is on the list right now.
