Last night I purchased Dead Space 2: Limited Edition from Best Buy, which came with a free download of Dead Space: Extraction, for $19.99. It was a great deal considering the added bonus content and primarily because, well, holy crap it's a fun game. I've been playing it for little more than an hour and I already love using that weapon used to levitate sharp rods and fire them at Necromorphs (sp?), so much that I rarely use the ammo you find later on. Not only that but the dark environments and storytelling also make it worth the ride. Granted, I haven't played the first game so I'm not entirely caught up on the story.

But aside from being one hell of a horror survival action game, I must say, it's done a good job of scaring the pants off me so far. From the dark halls you sneak through to shocking jump moments (random loud noises) to the monsters coming out from behind you out of nowhere--it plays out much like a (good) horror film, playing much of the horror elements cinematically and executing them subtly and evasively. I think this game will gleefully haunt my nightmares weeks to come, and I can honestly say it's scarier than pretty much all other horror games I've played--scarier than Resident Evil 4 or Doom 3 or Bioshock.

What would all of you say about that?

well first of all R.E.4 wasnt really scary at all, at least for me. that goes double for bioshock and doom 3.....but u are right about dead space it is scary or at least make u feel that way. its probably the only game ( besides silent hill downpour) that actually stays true to the survival horror genre. resident evil has been dead to me ever since r.e 4, while i did enjoy the 4th game just wasnt like the first 3. and resident evil 5? the only resident evil about that game was the title of the game lol. everything else was trash. had some fun time with co-op but thats as far as i go. dead space 1 was also good, u can get it from GS for about 10bucks used.

u should def try it out. but yea for survival horror the only 2 games this gen that kept me at the edge of my seat was the dead space games and silent hill downpour (even though downpour got some iffy reviews and did have some issues but nothing game breaking) i still enjoyed downpour as much as the previous silent hill games.....def cant wait for dead space 3, and they add a different SP with CO-OP i am excited to see how that turns out

I don't consider the Dead Space games scary. I would go with the Fatal Frame series but then again I was a lot younger when I played them so who knows if I would have the same feeling if I had played it now a days.

The Dead Space games are hands down the best survival horror games ever made. They are the scariest as well IMO.

To be honest, I was more freaked out and disturbed by the first Silent Hill than I was either Dead Space game. Dead Space 2 really is only scary to me in the, "AH! AH! AHHHH! WHY DO YOU FUC KERS KEEP COMING?!" sorta way.

Dead Space 2 is a good game but if you can - go an buy Dead Space 1 and play it first. You will be more scared, it's a phenomenal game and it follows the story.

Play Dead Space 1 first. :)

The first one was better. The second one was just short and turned into an action game.

Honestly sh2 wasn't THAT scary... I would say fatal frame, amnesia, and the original condemned were scarier in a more literal sense. Sh2 was just reaaalllyyyy unnerving. Back to the original point, yes ds2 is very scary, but there are much scarier games on the market...

If Dead Space 2 scared you I am guessing you lock your door at night and sleep with the light on?:P

It wasn't scary at all.

Play either Resident Evil Remake or Silent Hill 2 before you come and say those things.

You should have played the first game before the second, not only for the story, but it's overall a better game. Dead Space is a terrifying survival horror, and while Dead Space 2 is awesome and racks up the tension, it was more action orientated than the first one, and not scary imo.

Other scary games I've played: Siren Blood Curse, F.E.A.R. and Alan Wake.

I don't really think any game is all that scary, but I do find games to be creepy. Dead Space 2 isn't nearly as creepy as the first one, let alone games such as Amnesia, Silent Hill 2, and Clock Tower. Dead Space is a great series though, overall.

Great game and series but not the scariest by a long shot. Silent Hill 2, and Amnesia would be my picks for scariest. And also from what I'm hearing, Slender, though I have yet to play that myself.

no wonder this is scariest game if before some of the scariest games were re4 and bioshock they are not that scary, but really silent hill 1,2 fatal frame 1-3 were all so much more scarier then any re game, or dead space game

Diff things scare diff people. Sh2 was pathetic IMO when it came to true horror... Amnesia is another story...

Dead Space One was better. Condemned Criminal Originals was scarier AvP 1 and 2 had a better atmosphere and was much scarier.

I thought Dead Space 1 was a superb, scary game. Dead Space 2 was nothing but a corridor shooter set in the Dead Space universe, and didn't do anything at all for me. As far as Dead Space 3, an EA representative recently explained they ran it past focus groups of soccer moms and changed it to suit their tastes. That'll be a bargain bin purchase if I bother with it at all.

Play Slender.MethodManFTW

Slender is a boring as f**k, Amnesia clone.

Amnesia was scary as hell! Scarier than Dead Space imo. Dead Space is a more "pop out at you" scary unlike Amnesia which is all around scary. Would rather play a game where you can't do anything but run than play a game where you shoot the thing that popped out at you.

Anything other than Fatal Frame 2 is wrong, unless Amnesia is scarier (haven't played Amnesia).

It's tense and spooky but I don't find it the scariest game ever. Still great and worth going back to. Download and play FOR FREE Slender on your PC. I haven't even touched it yet because it is so damn scary. It is a great example of showing you that you don't need a budget to make a scary game. I also thought Slient Hill: Downpour and Silent Hill 3 were scary games.

Condemned 2 gave me a wicked stomach ache and thus setting off a panic attack. I haven't gone back since. I don't like how blurry the screen always is. I get that he is a drunk, but come on...

I thought the first Dead Space was scarier. I still think Fatal Frame 2 (or known here in Europe as Project Zero) is one of the scariest games.

I find "Hannah Montana" to be a MUCH scarier game...

I liked the first game (Dead Space, I mean, not "HM"), but after that, the series lost steam. This new one, I wouldn't wipe my - Uh, Nose - with it. Co-Op? Really? Is that what gamers want now, EA? Please, tell us more about our own desires. We had no idea we felt that way...

... Jackabaits.

It suffers from the horrible Resident Evil 5 syndrome. The pressure from the publisher to add something that "all the kids" want so they can appeal to the mass market, thus homogenizing the product so it can sell more. However, the "niche" Dead Space 1 and 2 filled won't be pleased with this title. Like me. I don't think I'll buy it. At least from what I've seen or at full price. It seems like such a generic shooter now. It is genuinely sad to see this.

Me too, Blades... The first game was my last finger-tip hold on the idea that real Survival Horror wasn't extinct. But with the announcement of 3 being a group-grope...

*sigh*

:|

... So glad I kept all of the horror games I've purchased in the past. And the first "Dead Space". That game was SUCH a nice surprise, in so many ways. I don't know that I was scared-scared, but there were more than a few moments of trepidation, and jolts a-plenty.

I always knew I liked you Monkey! :P I'm doing the same with RE6. Unless it turns out really good, I'm not going to get it, especially at full price. I feel the same with the original Dead Space. One of this generation's best games and it is really sad to see EA (a company I actually don't despise) step in and do this.

I don't think it's even close to being the scariest game ever (matter of opinion mind you) but it's a very well designed game to make you feel helpless, doing its job almost flawlessly. Glad to know you're playing it the right way, using body parts instead of ammo, kudos to you.

I think the first Dead Space does a much better job of building the tension than DS2. I know some people say the games are not scary, and I guess no video game is really scary. However Dead Space with the lights off, and headphones does have some serious moments that startle you.

I didn't think it was scary at all. Just a simple corridor shooter set in the Dead Space universe, which used to be scary and atmospheric but of course EA said "Screw that, we need to appeal to the Call of Duty kids!"

Now they found out via marketing analysis and focus groups that Call of Duty kids don't like horror games, so they're taking the horror out of Dead Space 3 to make it more appealing to them

Dead Space 2 had some moments where I jumped, but definitely not the scariest game I've played. I do agree that it has a great atmosphere :)
