I'm wondering if there's a way to defrag the hard drive in the PS3? Do you think it even fragments too badly?

Thanks.

The HDD and software in the PS3 is nothing like the HDD and OS used in M$ PC's. There is really no need to defrag the HDD.

Other than it being the same HDD and same file system, nothing at all the same :P Doing a backup and restore supposedly defragments it since it doesn't take a disc image, it rewrites the files, and I'd assume it would start from the beginning of the drive and write it in order without gaps. I really wouldn't recommend doing it just for that though, I doubt it makes much of a difference in load times. Backup and restore can take nearly 2 hours if you have a bunch of stuff on your huge hdd.

Here's a good HD question. I only have Ratchet and Clank saved to my 40 gig PS3 so how come I only have 30 gigs left? Where the HELL did 10 gigs go?

In theory any misc PC defragmentation software should work fine on the drive if you really wanted to, however there is always the chance Sonys got something custom floating round and a defrag could fail or destroy the disks contents.

Automatically? That sucks. So really it's a PS3 30 gig.

don't forget aout caching and that when ever you see the advertised amount of storage it isn't what it says. i put a 120gb hard drive in my 40gb ps3 and it says i have 111 to use. i just depends on the amount of storage space.

you could just stick the hard drive in a usb enclosure, plug it into your pc, and defragment it from there.

Sony should give us a utility to do this on the ps3, or even better... they should've chose a different file system!

all harddrives running an OS are like this

if you have a 320GB in your PC you are probably left with only about 280-300GB

Think about a pc hdd. It maybe be 250 gb but you have 220 gb available. This is because the operating system needs space as well which is not figured into hdd space. Hope that helps.

Actually the size has to do with HDs using Gibibytes for advertising. For example, I have a 1TB hd with no operating system, only backup files, but windows 7 says its only about 931GB. This is because the hd is actually 1 Tebibyte rather than 1 Terabyte. This is because 1 Gibibyte, or 1,000,000,000 bytes, is equal to 931.3 Megabytes or 931,300,000 bytes.

I'm guessing that companies use this system because it makes their HDs seem like they have more space than they really do, all though I'm not to sure about that. An operating systems ARE factored into the space being used on an HD.

The PS3 OS and Settings are storedseparatelyon a internal flash media. I personally have gone through several drives and corrupted one, but every time all my information, accounts, and settings are there when I put a new or freshly formatted drive in.

It is not the PS3 OS and System Settings, but FileSystem that takes up that hard disc space. Anything that has files will need a File System to manage it and OS needs some space to hold that information. THAT, will take up some HD space.

The internal hard drive of a PS3 doesn't use a Windows filesystem. Where do you guys get your info? The PS3 uses a Linux based journaled filesystem, the filesystem and system OS handle drive maintenance automatically.

I wouldn't think defragmenting would do much good. A game install would be one big block, neatly organized, and that would be the only thing your HD would be accessing while playing a game. A PC on the other hand might be running numerous programs simultaneously, and the fact that they're scattered all over the hard drive can slow things down.

HDD on PS3 don't get fragmented, that's a Windows OS problem. Once again MS makes it's products with problems. I don't think they know how to do it any other way.

yes you can, but you need the firmware 2.50 or above to do this. First you need to turn off your ps3, then turn on as you normally would, but do not let go of the on button, then eventually it will make a beep then go off, when you hear the last beep, let go for a second until it turns off. then do the same again, until you hear 2 beeps together, then follow the on screen instructions. Then you will come to the recovery screen. Then there should be, Defrag hard drive, if its not you don't have the right ps3:)
