I'm wondering if there's a way to defrag the hard drive in the PS3? Do you think it even fragments too badly?
Thanks.

The HDD and software in the PS3 is nothing like the HDD and OS used in M$ PC's. There is really no need to defrag the HDD.jimm895
Other than it being the same HDD and same file system, nothing at all the same :P Doing a backup and restore supposedly defragments it since it doesn't take a disc image, it rewrites the files, and I'd assume it would start from the beginning of the drive and write it in order without gaps. I really wouldn't recommend doing it just for that though, I doubt it makes much of a difference in load times. Backup and restore can take nearly 2 hours if you have a bunch of stuff on your huge hdd.
[QUOTE="thegame1980"]Here's a good HD question. I only have Ratchet and Clank saved to my 40 gig PS3 so how come I only have 30 gigs left? Where the HELL did 10 gigs go?dstryr13
some of it goes to the OS and system settings
Automatically? That sucks. So really it's a PS3 30 gig.

don't forget aout caching and that when ever you see the advertised amount of storage it isn't what it says. i put a 120gb hard drive in my 40gb ps3 and it says i have 111 to use. i just depends on the amount of storage space.

you could just stick the hard drive in a usb enclosure, plug it into your pc, and defragment it from there.

all harddrives running an OS are like this
if you have a 320GB in your PC you are probably left with only about 280-300GB
Actually the size has to do with HDs using Gibibytes for advertising. For example, I have a 1TB hd with no operating system, only backup files, but windows 7 says its only about 931GB. This is because the hd is actually 1 Tebibyte rather than 1 Terabyte. This is because 1 Gibibyte, or 1,000,000,000 bytes, is equal to 931.3 Megabytes or 931,300,000 bytes.
I'm guessing that companies use this system because it makes their HDs seem like they have more space than they really do, all though I'm not to sure about that. An operating systems ARE factored into the space being used on an HD.

The PS3 OS and Settings are storedseparatelyon a internal flash media. I personally have gone through several drives and corrupted one, but every time all my information, accounts, and settings are there when I put a new or freshly formatted drive in.
I wouldn't think defragmenting would do much good. A game install would be one big block, neatly organized, and that would be the only thing your HD would be accessing while playing a game. A PC on the other hand might be running numerous programs simultaneously, and the fact that they're scattered all over the hard drive can slow things down.
