The first level has a very good design. When you get to certain points you can open a gate that brings you back near the starting point and lets you go from the starting point back to where you left off. The first boss is can also be accessed like that, but in other levels you sometimes have a long trek back to the boss.
If you're having trouble try starting with a different class, some are harder at the beginning, such as thief and barbarian and some are easier, such as soldier, knight and royal. The soldier starts with a shield and spear and you can keep the shield up while attacking with a spear.
The game has a steep learning curve, but you are learning every time you die and after many deaths you will start to find you aren't dieing so often anymore. The last few bosses I faced didn't seem much of a challenge but the ones I faced while learning the game (other than the first boss) seemed impossible. I agree that this is one of my favorite games this gen.
Check the Demon's Souls forums for more information. Oh, the asian and korean are both completely English except for the manual, but the asian has an English instruction sheet. The Japanese version is also in English but the menus are Japanese.
