The problem for me is the lack of incentive to explore.
In previous games, every 10 hidden packages you found was a new weapon at your safehouse. That made it worth checking every alley and carpark. Now, get all 200 pigeons and we will give you an attack helicopter? I think I've probably found 7 so I know it's a reward that I won't be collecting on any time soon, so I have no incentive to look for them.
What happened to the R3 missions? Although I wouldn't call them fun, the advantages that they bestow made it worth getting them done early on in the game.
In previous games, every parked car, every motorbike leaning against a wall was worth trying out because it might just trigger a checkpoint race side mission. This game doesn't seem to have this hidden side mission stuff, so, again I have no incentive to check out the vehicles around me, especially as the Import/Export aspect in this game is for particular vehicles rather than model of vehicle.
I also used to love using a plane or helicopter to get around in, but since there are no planes and getting a helicopter is not really that convenient, I tend to use taxis which just arn't as much fun. People moaned that in SA there was a lot of wasted space in the countryside, but I thought that that was necessary to give enough airspace to be able to use a plane. What R* should have done is fill the empty spaces with races rather than take them out altogether.
I'm still playing the game, and I will finish it, but it has been nowhere near the fun that PS2 GTAs have been.
The Rhino Tank.
I could imagine a Rhino Tank roaming the streets of NYC but they just didn't include it. :(
I totally agree. After I completed the game, I was like, then what? There wasnt anything worth going back for. The huge amount of cash with nothing to spend it on pretty much said it all. There was definitely something missing.Elann2008

Yeah. Aside from graphics and a better diverse city, San Andreas (imo) is still superior to GTA4 in terms of size, things to do, ect. It's like "the next gen version of GTA3".
It also needs more cheats for godsakes. Other GTA games had so many, where did all the freakn' cheats go?? Where's the tank? Why can't I hijack the Subway? Sure, I can live without the planes. But the heli controls are terrible. Heck, the controls over all are just sloppy. I did like the cover system though. It may not be the best, but atleast I'm able to use it.
I just think we'll see "the next gen San Andreas equivalent" pretty soon. Well, I hope so anyways, taking advantage of the PS3's power.
GTA IV lacked a lot. I mean it was a great game, but it wasn't what they originally made it out to be. They said you could enter the MAJORITY of stores and houses and you can barely go into any....And yes I do miss the things it lacked like buying houses and feeling like you're on top of the world after you complete the game. With Niko you still feel like the beginning maybe even worse...but whatever. GTA 5 or whatever they decide to do next for GTA will be better...hopefully.
As it stands GTA:SA is the best GTA it was the most improved imo.

I loved SA's massive size and the big country sides. There was so much to explore and I may be a minority, but I actually liked driving from city to city lol
Also, THE FRIEND "SYSTEM" MUST DIE
It's like dealing with a bunch of sick, obsessed stalkers that won't leave you alone. Especially the kind that won't call you until you're on the very end of the 3rd island and expect you to drive all the way back to the first island IN AN HOUR (game time)
Also, the "cop zone" is just a front. Cops still randomly spawn infront of you anyways and chase you to the very ends of the universe on 1 star making sure you stay in that circle. Even with a Comet.
I was very dissapointed with the soundtrack. GTA San Andreas and Vice City had soundtracks that would make me want to drive around just to listen to the music. On GTAIV there are maybe 2 songs I really like.DilrodAgree 100%, hated the soundtrack in GTA 4.
Can someone explain what Rockstar meant when they said its a "rags to better rags" story when I finished the game with close to a million in money? Stupid.
Missing way too much stuff, almost like they keeping stuff out to hype people up for the next.
Currently, I have GTA4, about almost done with it, but since I first popped in the Blu-ray, I felt like I was missing a huge part of my GTA experience. I mean, Yes, it was a great game, but I felt like they left out the little things that made it special. Being a sequel to GTA3(which means, it directly excludes SA and VC) I felt like they didn't deliver the features/extras I wanted. The game plays like an updated version of GTA3, which essencial it should be, but I missed the features like buying property, owning property, car customization, and even the details that made it unique. Being a sandbox, it shouldn't leave out things that made it good, because with sandbox games, it's those features that make it realistic. If I eat myself stupid, hey I should get fat. If I work out, Well my punches should be stronger. Unlike in MGS4, with a game like that, you can't just reuse the same mechanics over and over, because it would be to linear, but with GTA, I should be able to experience new ideas for a change to make it hit me closer to home. Something along the lines of buying cars for example or to give you a more personal connection with things to enhance your gameplay experience. I mean, I thought being that they were crossing over to nex gen, I thought that it would make me feel like I was living niko, not just unlocking his story.
Although there were many features that enhanced fighting, driving, and surviving, but wasn't it the little things in GTA:SA that made it great? Online, they have some of these features, but honestly, the online isn't even that great and it feels like there are more online features then there are single player features. I just think that there are things they could have put in GTA to make it a great game, and still have lots of room to make the next GTA game. I just feel like GTA4 gave me a story, and thats pretty much it. They brought back some features from GTA3 that were phenominal and made it great, but I felt like they left too many things out, or didn't add enough to make it great. But other than that, I wouldn't say the game deserves a "10", more like a 9.
Anyone else fell this way? Or is it just me.

I agree 100% with you on this. I loved it at first but as soon as I came to realise all the missing features I didn't appreciate it as much as I did. I think it just tries to win you over with its overall impressive presentation and once you get past that, it becomes clear that this game is severely lacking in what has made GTA so good.

Or to nail'em for DLC. "Pay us extra money for stuff that should've been in the game in the first place"
Yes, I agree. What annoyed me the most, though, was the game world. I like Liberty city(and I DO love the game!) but I miss the open world of SA. Three separte cities, country side, desert, and numerous small towns with interesting perks in them....I though it was worth the less detail.
Oh, and what also really annoys me, even though the game is great, is the score. 10? Perfect? I'm sure it was great, maybe a 9 something, but it was only the hype that pushed it up to a 10.FULLAUTONICK
Lol your all wrong the game is awesome, its going for a different more subtle realistic approach which makes acheiving cool things in it more satisfying. The graphics and physics are way improved the cars are miles better the shooting is way better all this makes the core gameplay and presentation better!

Agreed.
Hmm...Nope. I felt that GTA4 was the best in series, but I know there's a lot of people that disagree.
GTA4 isn't what I thought it would be either and I feel like lots of these reviews sites lied about it because the game has about 30 10/10 scores off of gamerankings. I have played several better games than gta4 that didn't get half as many 10's as this game got on gamerankings and in the end the game seems to be nothing more than a joke than the next big thing.
I can tell you one thing I won't be buying the next GTA game after this at least not when its first released. I'm going to wait awhile for the game to drop in price and the most I will pay for it is $30 and R* will be lucky to get that after pulling this bs. The worst thing about it all is that people tolerate it.
I'm glad that GTA IV wasn't a rehash of GTA: San Andreas. San Andreas was a good game, but it was my least favorite GTA to date. I thought it was too heavy on the character customization, the expansive empty drives between areas were boring and it was too much work to maintain your character.
I actually liked the dumber AI of GTA III more than the smarter cops in GTA IV. I could stand on the warehouse by the port and shoot RPG's at cars for hours, taking out the helicopters that came by. Or being able to snipe someone without the cops knowing exactly where I was. But I still find that GTA IV is more of what I like in the series.
