I have a couple hundred saved up, so I was thinking of buying the new PS3 slim since it's a great deal at $300 considering all it can do... but then my buddy was like "Don't forget about the HDTV though..." and he explained how vital it is to have one for this console.

Will gameplay be drastically worse if I don't have an HDTV?

If so, would you recommend me to get a 22-30" TV or a bigger one like 40" and up?

I don't belive it would affect the gameplay, but with an HDTV your games will look much better. If you so decide to buy an HDTV, I recommend a 32'' with a resolution of at least 720p.

For the first few months I played my PS3 on an sdtv and it was fine aside from a couple games having some hard to read text. So it does not make it unplayable the gameplay itself won't suffer.. that said an hdtv makes a big difference visually and you will get a lot more enjoyment out of it. it really depends on your budget and what you are willing to spend on your entertainment experience.

The biggest problem you'll experience is nearly illegible text in some games, including menus and in game instruction. Grand Theft Auto 4 was one of the worst for this issue since alot of your instruction comes from text messages throughout the game. For the most part though, the console and many of it's gaes can be enjoyed in SD, just not to the full extent of their visual glory. :P

I personally own a small tube TV and I can say that on previous gen consoles (PS2, Xbox) it worked fine. But now with my PS3 a lot of the text is pretty hard to read, so I'm saving up for a 26" or so 720p HDTV.

Aha...haha.. are you serious? You won't play one of the greatest games released yet (MGS4) because it's to low of a resolution?

1] You don't need a HDTV, but it is very good to have.

2] The t.v you use doesn't affect the gameplay (much). You just won't see and hear as clearly.

3] The size of the HDTV generally depends on your living space, and your personal preferances. Can't really recomend one without knowing where you're putting it, and knowing what your budget is. Best thing to do is go to the local store and see what they have in stock/on sale, then ask about a particular make/model.

You dont need one if you cant afford one. You can still enjoy games on a normal tv the graphics are still good too. On HDTV of course its better and the text like other people said.

It's most probably going in my bedroom. I'm thinking 32" would be perfect. My bedroom isn't that big and 32" isn't that small. It sounds tiny, but I've seen some at the store... they're actually much bigger than the one in my living room lol. I guess I'm willing to spend around 400 max. I suppose Best Buy can help me with a payment plan or something... yeah?

No, you don't need an HDTV, I've been using an SDTV to play my PS3 for 2 years and the games still look great. The only bad thing is that it's hard to read small text.

I suggest youto save your money for an LCD hdtv because the new LED Hdtvs are coming so the price a 40 + inchs will be low.

That is easily remedied by forcing it in 4:3. I don't mind the bars, and it works perfectly on both types of T.Vs.

You dont NEED it to play....BUT

I wouldnt want to ever play my PS3 without it. Its a light and day difference...PS3 without an HDTV still kinda looks like PS2...but with the TV its crazy awesome. I can hardly watch normal SD tv anymore bcause of this...While watching TV I usally stay within the 700-850 channel range ;)

Its not needed to effect the gameplay but some things will suffer like being able to read some of the text displayed on certain games. I wouldn't neglect it, but its not essential.

Exactly, it is cheaper and much better because you get to play your games upfront and it is way more intense, but remember to get one with HDMI :O)... I personally use a HP 2309m. ( look it up because I highly recommend it ) Ps the monitor does not need to have inbuilt speakers if you have some good pc speakers but you will need to buy a Y-cabel for the AV multi composite cabel so you can connect it to your pc speakers.

A 32" is perfect for your sitch, just make sure you get a good brand, it's worth it. A 720p HDTV is also fine and will cost less

You don;t need a HDTV, but it is highly recommended. Before I had my HDTV I couldn't read things on a normal TV. I was playing Condemned 2 at the moment and there were some parts where I had to make "select a choice" decisions and I had to randomly choose could I just couldnt read the words. They were too pixeled, lol. Also on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed I couldnt read the bios.

Okay, so I did my research and narrowed em down to two TVs.

The first one is a 19" Phillips. It seems tiny, but I'll keep it on my desk and play up close and personal, like I would play a PC game. The second is a 32" Phillips. And it costs twice as much! I'm a poor college student, but if you think that I'll be disappointed with the 19" then let me know.

Thank you so much for your help!

Depends on how close you will sit and how big your room is. Myself I wouldn't be able to fit in a 32"> TV so I spent my money on a good 26" instead.

No it's stupid, you don't need one, obviously is nicer to watch it on an HDTV but with a regular one you'll have as much fun, BUT (and this is a big but) I would advice you not to buy split-screen games for obvious reasons, also remember to buy S-Video Cables they are expensive compared to HDMIs (which you can get for about 2 dollars on amazon), with an S-Video cable you'll be able to play in 516i and the difference it's huge since on a regular TV with 460i you won't be able to read small text at all, how big is you TV? If you are going to buy a TV, buy whichever you want, the difference between a 22" and a 40" is obvious... it's bigger. Though I would advice you to buy a 26" at least, I feel anything less than that is too small

Well, it depends. Some times game play can be affected because the text might show up blurry, etc. I would say to get the most value out of your PS3 you NEED an HDTV. Just plain and simple. You can play on SDTV but really, you're not going to enjoy it.
