Would games like COD4 feel the same if you didn't get the +5xp on your screen? Would Killzone 2 be the same if you didn't here that little noise and +3 points everytime you got a kill? I feel an accomplishment when I see points on my screen, how about you?

Do they make the game better? Absolutely not. They do however tend to create a stronger bond with a game, while your striving to earn the most amount of points that you can.

Not necessarily a better game but more addictive? Hell yea. Seeing +10xp in any game feels like an accomplishment and generally leads to a reward. Which is what real gamers go for, a rewarding experience.

More arcade-like multiplayer experiences tend to work well with points. It's like you literally KILLED a man, and his soul (which has turned into a bunch of numbers) has been absorbed into your own essence. However, they definately wouldn't work for some games and experiences. Imagine a point system being incorporated into the MGS4 microwave scene. "YOU CAN DO IT SNAKE!" +50 +50 +50 X3 COMBOOOOOOOOOO "COME ON, SNAKE! JUST A LITTLE FURTHER!" +50 +50 +50 *zap* "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKERRR!" :|

LOL, what he said was right though,
it's s much better with arcade like games,

that's why MP works so beautifully.

but I can't imagine that being a good thing in the single player portion.

i love the on-screen xp points that i get per kill in some shooting games... It makes playing that much more fun. my true joy don't even lie in the accumulation of those xp points but in how neat it looks when that little +10 pops on my screen when i down a target. so do these points make the game better? i think they do, becasue they can make you see the game in a slightly different light than if those pop-up points did not exist (given you like to see those pop-up points in the first place)... There are people who wouldn't acknowledge these points as contributing factors that improve a particular game, but ultimately, we all have a slightly (some wildly) different view as to what constitutes to the meaning of "better"... so generally speaking, from an enjoyment perspective: if those points could make the experience more rewarding and/or addictive ever so slightly on a subjective level, wouldn't that in essence be something that makes a game seem "better" to that particular person?

oh. and keep in mind that when i say points make the game better, that the game in question is one in which point pop-ups are applicable without being a hindrance (like an FPS game, for instance)

Battlefield 1943 is really the only game where I feel the points showing up make the game better.
