Do you buy games based on ratings or personal interest?
For ex: Tekken DR has a high rating, but you don't like fighting games or suk at them, would you still buy it?

I will never buy a game because of someone else's score. Never. However, I will use it as reference, and combine it with reader reviews from different sites.
For games such as RPGs or hack and slash, I tend to take the ratings lightly. If they get a great score, they'll get my attention, but even if they get a lower score, I'll still rent it or check it out depending on a few factors. Take Untold Legends for example. That game got a bad score by most sites, but I loved it. You have to keep in mind that some gamers are willing to forgive what others will not, right? We're all different.
Another example is Dungeon Maker: Hunting Ground. Although gamespot has not released a review yet, IGN gave it a poor score, and I can't fathom what the reviewer was thinking as he bashed certain aspects of the game that clearly didn't make sense to me (I've put in about 15 hours in the game myself). I won't go into detail, but it's clear to me that the IGN reviewer just didn't get it. So you see, if I would have listened to that review, I would have missed out on one of my all time favorite PSP games (dungeon maker).
I guess my point is that w're all different, and even reviewers are human, and although most of them aren't biased, sometimes it leaks through, and sometimes the reviewers just see it the same way we do (it's their job, we do it for fun), so take the official revirew's score with a grain of salt and make your own opinion, and MOST OF ALL: READ THE READER REVIEWS! :)
I take both into consideration. I am always willing to try out new types of games, but if I am buying a new type of game, then I wll buy one that is highly rated. For my favourite types of games or games that I am familiar with, I still look at reviews to find specifics about the gameplay to see if I want to buy it. Sometimes I just feel like playing a classic hack-n-slash which usually gets mediocre ratings because of lack of depth.
So basically I look more at reviews for types of games I am unfamiliar with. I also browse specifics in reviews for types I am familiar with to get details about gameplay because I tend to be a bit fussy at times.
Sometimes I learn lessons, and the reviews scream "I told you so". I love Star Trek games. I have played every game, even the ones on the Commodore 64. I picked up Star Tek: Legacy. THe game was horrible and unplayable. I was kicking myself, thinking "I should have listened to the reviews". There went $40.
Iw as also going to get the Fantastic Four game for the Wii. The review made me reconsider.
I have to say this is an excellent topic!
A lot of gamers here go by personal interest more than ratings. It's evident with the kind of recommendations that are given when another gamer asks what games are actually worth checking out. It is very important for those who recommend games to fully explain why a game is worth anyone's time because not everyone will have similar tastes. What bothers me is that gamers don't give any details or valid reasons, saying only that it "owns", which is getting a bit tired now.
I bought games that were reviewed postively, negatively, or mixed. The smart thing to do would be to buy low rated games when the price drastically drops. That way you may feel frustrated for wasting your time more so than you would with your money spent. Personal interest vs. rating? It has to be a balance of both and here's why:
It was my personal interest in mature or realistic gaming that led me to buy The Punisher for PS2 (low rated game). I lost interest quickly in that game(it felt unpolished). It was the score of the highly rated Final Fantasy VII for PS which led me to wonder what the hoopla was about with that game. I lost interest in that game all together even though it was a very well made game (don't like turn-based RPGs). Moreover, the balance of a good score and personal interest resulted me in getting games such as Syphon Filter Dark Mirror, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and Socom Fireteam Bravo. It paid off as I enjoyed those titles. I would always recommend these games to other gamers with good reasons over popularity. That is my reason to have a balance of both! I'm out.
Yea I usually go both a bit of both as well. I often go for games with higher than 7.5 ratings then I read some reviews and if I like that type of game, I usually buy it from personal interest :) because some of my favourites games like Mario Hoops and FF3 got low ratings, I love them! XP
both... I've got games that were raterd under 8 becuz of personal interest, and i'm usually very satisfied, like Lego Star Wars, Mario Kart DD, Super Princess Peach, Mario Party 7, etc, all of which turned out to be great.
on the other hand, if a game is rated above a 9 for a system i own, i'm much more willing to check it out and not miss out on a "classic" for that system, even if i had no prior intersest in it. some recent examples of that are me recently getting Tales of Symphonia, Mario Paper: TTYD, Nintendogs, etc.
