Do you buy games based on ratings or personal interest?

For ex: Tekken DR has a high rating, but you don't like fighting games or suk at them, would you still buy it?

Umm... i used to alsways buy things that are rated #1, but i don't trust the ratings anymore. I have bought so many games in the past that were rated high like for the DS (mario kart,EBA,Animal crossing) and for the psp (Lumines) and all those games i hate. Now, the games i buy are the games that looks like games from the past i once loved.

A little of both, but I don't pay much attention to the ratings anymore. After reading what a low score Monster Hunter Freedom got...I pretty much lost all respect for the ratings here. I buy whatever looks like it will interest me, and whatever is on sale :D I'm not a CAG for nothing ;)

Often the games that are "bad" usually turn out to be my favorites. SoI buy games more based on my interests, and not usually ratings. (now ifa ton of sources say that a game is bad, then I'll usually listen, but one bad rating isn't going to keep me away from a game that has my attention)

I definitely go by personal interest. There have been many games that I have bought that I love that the reviews said it sucked. Reviews do sway me, but I go by personal interest. for ex. Im a big fan of harvest moon, so I usually buy a game even if it's rated poorly.

I dont care what a game is rated, if it looks cool and plays well, i will buy it, this is how people find great games that are under rated by the editors and public.

you have to go both ways. If you rely soley on personal intrest and you like platformers then you will find that spiderman 3 is considered a platformer and will buy it based on personal intrest in platformers instead of buying, say daxter. Spiderman 3 is mostly garbage and daxter is not. so you ended up with a worse game. If you base it soley on review score then you might end up buying gears of war instead of C&C3 tiberium wars even though you dont like shooters. You ended up with a game that you dont like because you chose the game based on the review score only. You MUST use the review score and the personal preference to pick the game to buy.

both.  Tekken is a good example though.  I normally don't like fighting games but heck with the reviews I had to give it a chance.  If a game I'm interested in though gets horrible reviews it's prolly not worth it though I do have NFL Street 3 for PSP and though its not a great game I got what I expected and enjoy it.

i use both. using personal interest for games is for finding hidden gems. a game may not be rated high by everybody but there's always a chancd that somebody will like it. if you don't want to gamble & waste money use ratings that is the way to go!

Personal Interest.

Otherwise, I would have never played my favorite game series, Legend Of Heroes.

Definitely both. Even if a game has high ratings but I don't like the genre I wouldn't buy it for sure. If I like a genre but it reportedly sucks bad, no deal either.

Interest...pure and simple. Although a game that has a low rating can leave me edgey, Even if a game does have a high rating, if I don't have any interest in that certain franchise, chances are I won't buy it. (IMO)

Interest. Final Fantasy XII got a great rating, but I absolutely hated it. Pure example of why I shouldn't trust the hype, or ratings. If a game looks suited toward my interests, I'm going to get it.

I will never buy a game because of someone else's score. Never. However, I will use it as reference, and combine it with reader reviews from different sites.

For games such as RPGs or hack and slash, I tend to take the ratings lightly. If they get a great score, they'll get my attention, but even if they get a lower score, I'll still rent it or check it out depending on a few factors. Take Untold Legends for example. That game got a bad score by most sites, but I loved it. You have to keep in mind that some gamers are willing to forgive what others will not, right? We're all different.

Another example is Dungeon Maker: Hunting Ground. Although gamespot has not released a review yet, IGN gave it a poor score, and I can't fathom what the reviewer was thinking as he bashed certain aspects of the game that clearly didn't make sense to me (I've put in about 15 hours in the game myself). I won't go into detail, but it's clear to me that the IGN reviewer just didn't get it. So you see, if I would have listened to that review, I would have missed out on one of my all time favorite PSP games (dungeon maker).

I guess my point is that w're all different, and even reviewers are human, and although most of them aren't biased, sometimes it leaks through, and sometimes the reviewers just see it the same way we do (it's their job, we do it for fun), so take the official revirew's score with a grain of salt and make your own opinion, and MOST OF ALL: READ THE READER REVIEWS! :)

I will not buy a game just because it has a high rating and I will buy a game that has a low rating but I think looks good

I take both into consideration. I am always willing to try out new types of games, but if I am buying a new type of game, then I wll buy one that is highly rated. For my favourite types of games or games that I am familiar with, I still look at reviews to find specifics about the gameplay to see if I want to buy it. Sometimes I just feel like playing a classic hack-n-slash which usually gets mediocre ratings because of lack of depth.

So basically I look more at reviews for types of games I am unfamiliar with. I also browse specifics in reviews for types I am familiar with to get details about gameplay because I tend to be a bit fussy at times.

Sometimes I learn lessons, and the reviews scream "I told you so". I love Star Trek games. I have played every game, even the ones on the Commodore 64. I picked up Star Tek: Legacy. THe game was horrible and unplayable. I was kicking myself, thinking "I should have listened to the reviews". There went $40.

Iw as also going to get the Fantastic Four game for the Wii. The review made me reconsider.

I have to say this is an excellent topic!

A lot of gamers here go by personal interest more than ratings. It's evident with the kind of recommendations that are given when another gamer asks what games are actually worth checking out. It is very important for those who recommend games to fully explain why a game is worth anyone's time because not everyone will have similar tastes. What bothers me is that gamers don't give any details or valid reasons, saying only that it "owns", which is getting a bit tired now.

I bought games that were reviewed postively, negatively, or mixed. The smart thing to do would be to buy low rated games when the price drastically drops. That way you may feel frustrated for wasting your time more so than you would with your money spent. Personal interest vs. rating? It has to be a balance of both and here's why:

It was my personal interest in mature or realistic gaming that led me to buy The Punisher for PS2 (low rated game). I lost interest quickly in that game(it felt unpolished). It was the score of the highly rated Final Fantasy VII for PS which led me to wonder what the hoopla was about with that game. I lost interest in that game all together even though it was a very well made game (don't like turn-based RPGs). Moreover, the balance of a good score and personal interest resulted me in getting games such as Syphon Filter Dark Mirror, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and Socom Fireteam Bravo. It paid off as I enjoyed those titles. I would always recommend these games to other gamers with good reasons over popularity. That is my reason to have a balance of both! I'm out.

Yea I usually go both a bit of both as well. I often go for games with higher than 7.5 ratings then I read some reviews and if I like that type of game, I usually buy it from personal interest :) because some of my favourites games like Mario Hoops and FF3 got low ratings, I love them! XP

both... I've got games that were raterd under 8 becuz of personal interest, and i'm usually very satisfied, like Lego Star Wars, Mario Kart DD, Super Princess Peach, Mario Party 7, etc, all of which turned out to be great.

on the other hand, if a game is rated above a 9 for a system i own, i'm much more willing to check it out and not miss out on a "classic" for that system, even if i had no prior intersest in it. some recent examples of that are me recently getting Tales of Symphonia, Mario Paper: TTYD, Nintendogs, etc.
