i think they pretty much have to as i stated in another thread. No one wants to go from $500 up to $600. They might keep it at $600 after the 60gb models are gone to see if sales hold up, but i really doubt they will.

But they won'tannounce anything regarding a price drop until all the 60gb are gone. if they said the 80gb will be $500 once the 60gb are gone, no one would buy the 60gb model.

I want to know the reason they want to discontinue the 60gb model. is it because they plan to have all these downloadable games like warhawk and SOCOM?? I don't think Sony needs to compete with the Elite yet as the majority of 360 owners right now have the core or premium.anyway, hopefully this is the last discontinuation we see. I dont want sony to say they are discontinuing the 80gb for a 120gb or something.

Unless they are seriously STUPID, yes, they will drop the price. If they do not, it shows the disconnect. They are pulling a Microsoft (many Microsoft peripherals have unjustified price points and unjustified price skips...a 20 gig hard drive is not worth $100, for example, and NEITHER is a 20 gig upgrade!).

I dont think MS will drop thier prices until Sony does, cause at 400 there still more inexpensive than the 60gb so theyll just ring in the dinero till Sony get dangerally close in sales.

I think people just have to accept the fact that businesses cannot announce a price drop before it actually happens. It just doesn't make sense as it would make sales dead in the water as everyone will hold out on buying one. The price drop WILL happen, probably in the holdays season when price drops traditionally happen anyway. They just cannot announce it.

Anyway, there are millions of 60 gigs produced already, so i don't think you need to worry about them running out soon. By that time, surely a couple of months at least, and just right in the middle of the holidays buying spree, Sony will announce a price drop, since the 80 gigs are cheaper than the 60 gigs to produce by then anyway, and they have already shown that they can afford the 499 price point by selling the 60 gigs at that price.

The only reason they are not pricing the 80 gigs at that price point now is that otherwise they must burn all the millions of 60 gigs they've already produced.

I think they are going at it the wrong way. I think they should make a PS3 with like 10 gb. Keep everything the 60 gig have. And seriously drop the price to like around 300- 350. Then get more people to buy it. For christ shake we can add a hard drive to the thing so they can cut the devolopment cost by cutting unnessary stuff and they can use the emulater to help with the price cut. Plus they can advertise making customize ps3 which mean they can add how many gig a customer want with out doing the dirty work and producing more ps3 to collect dust that everyone don't want. It ain't got to be so complex. Keep it simple.

Of course it will drop in price but the question is when. I would say in about 2 years it should be around $300 to $350. I would even bet a redesign just like what they didwith the PS2.

Once they've depleted the 60 gigs. I think they will be offering the 80 gig with & without the bundle (or possibly just without). And I think the price will possibly drop below $499 as well. They have some additional savings built into the 80 gig model with the subtraction of the emotion engine... just how much saving? who knows, but hopefully atleast another $50 worth!

The plan is to stop making ps3's with the emotion engine to save money. What other reason can there be?I really do not consider this a price drop more like a clearance sale to get rid of old stock that did not sale. Sony is forcing people to buy up now or else pay $600 for 20 worthless gigs and a game you have no choice over. Sony is putting a scare into people to increase sales. I was happy 2 days ago when Sony dropped the price but after todays news Sony is just evil. My problem is that when the price shoots back up to $600 sales will drop off again. What game developer wants to make games for a slow selling system?

It's about the games and not this blu-ray movie crap. This is called gamespot not moviespot. How many times do you what to watch the same movie over and over again?

The problem with that is that the avg consumer does not know how to and would not want to try to upgrade their hard drive. They'd only have enough space for game data & game saves and would miss out on a lot of the network content. It might prove to be a good version to target to non-online gamers... but I think Sony's goal is to get as many ppl involved with online as possible.

How many times do you want to play the same game over & over again? It's all entertainment and blu ray is GREATLY appreciated. Espcecially after seeing some of the results the devs are getting from it.

At any rate, once the 60 gigs are gone, the price isn't shooting back up to $600. They will always offer at least one version that does not include a bundle... so when the 60 gig is gone, you will see the 80gig released w/o the game and it'll probably be around $499 as well.

except the 10gb HDDs are more expensive than the 60 gigs to produce as nobody produces them anymore. Economies of scale people. The additional gis do not ADD to the cost. In fact, the 80 gigs will eventually cost less than the 60 gigs pretty soon.

Certainly. August is GCDC. They'll most likely reveal the new TouchSense controller then. If not then, definitely TGS. By then enough of their 60GB stock will be gone (or at least they likely are planning on that), and to make up for that they'll announce a new $500 SKU with the TouchSense controller. They'll likely reduce the 60GB SKU again if they must, or just delay the new SKU. In any case, I wouldn't bet on there being any real lack of a store-shelved $500 SKU in any form. They'll adapt soon as it's getting low.

Yea that true not many know how to do so. That why I think they should consider doing custom ps3 for them. And let the other do it themselve. Atleast they can cut some expensive and save space. The reason I say scrap down stuff that it can be replace or up grade is to help with the cutting the price. Like me for an example I don't have a wifi thing going on nor an hdtv. I think they should try customizing ps3 for people like me and people that have certain things and not going to get certain things. You know?

of course they will "drop" the price of the 80gb version they just can't announce it yet. because if they do, nobody will buy the 60gb version and wait for the 80gb and then sony will have millions of 60gb sitting on pallets in the back room.

Part of me thinks they should drop the price of the 80GB after all the 60GB version are sold. Then I think how much it will really p*ss people off if they buy a 60GB two weeks before the 80GB drops in price. Sony's already shot themselves in the foot with the announcement of the 60GB being discontinued. It can only hurt them more if they drop the price of the 80GB as soon as the 60GB is gone, not that that could do much at this point. Zing!!!

Hey Guys. Let me jump back in here to answer some questions. Kaz has confirmed that we have stopped production on the 60GB in Asia. However, we have a very ample supply of systems still here in the North American market and will be able to meet demand for months to come at the new $499. We will keep monitoring the market and take the necessary steps to meet consumer needs once the 60GB model is depleted from retail."

Guys, the above answer is straight from SCEA from the playsation blog. I think he just about stopped short of definitivelysaying there will be a price drop, but it is implied that it is in the cards.

In the meantime, just take advantage of the price cut on the 60 gig

I give sony a little more credit than that

theyre a home electronics company, they know full well it would be disaterous it would be to leave the 80gb at that price when the consumers have already seen that they can lower the price

theyre a billion dollar company that has products in EVERYTHING that is home entertainment, its their forte

Yes they will, in August.

The problem with Sony is twofold.

1. They react to disasters, not prevent them.

2. They ignore consumer perception.

Oh please. Its a 20 gb difference. This isnt like the 20 vs 60 where the 60 had wifi and memory card slots. Someone could buy their own 80 gb laptop drive for 40 bucks if it means that much to them.

honestly I was really angry and called them out on this crap on the blog shortly after this interview showed up, but I think I know what they're doing now. I think the only reason the 80 gig is $599 is because they need the 60 gig to move and people wont see a difference worth $100 in the two systems (yes I know everyone knows this already) but I would bet that within days of the 60 gig being sold out they bounce in with a price drop on the 80 gig. I know all this has caused a stir on game forums but the average consumer probably has no idea all this stuff is even happening. So if they end up doing what I think around black friday (day after thanksgiving for non-americans) they could make the switch and never lose a bit of momentum, maybe even gain some.

I believe it will happen right around the holiday season (Thanksgiving or Christmas).

Then prepare to hear more people complaining about being robbed/jipped/cheated/betrayed by the price drop, again.

[QUOTE="true_apollo"]Part of me thinks they should drop the price of the 80GB after all the 60GB version are sold. Zing!!! theburg

Oh please. Its a 20 gb difference. This isnt like the 20 vs 60 where the 60 had wifi and memory card slots. Someone could buy their own 80 gb laptop drive for 40 bucks if it means that much to them.

for more on hard drive expansion, see the thread that I started a week ago on the PS3 forum:

Probably when they sell all the 60 GB, they will drop Motorstorm and the price from the 80 GB package.
