We already know what the battle system will be like, to an extent:
"This time, Tsuchida was asked from the start to create a flashy, speedy battle system. He felt that the command-based systems that have been used for previous Final Fantasy games wouldn't allow for this. However, Square Enix wanted a battle system that was as fast as an action game while allowing the player to input commands. That's apparently what we'll be getting in FFXIII.
The battle system is still considered an ATB system, complete with time flowing by as you input commands. However, the actual means of input has changed a bit and, according to Tsuchida, will now allow for more control options. You'll be able to, for example, select between carrying out a simple slash, or charging and then slashing. Some characters will be able to combine magic with standard attacks. And all of this is somehow connected to a new animation system that will blend individual motions to result in a single smooth motion.
Final Fantasy XIII's battle system may share a few points in common with the Final Fantasy XII system. Rather than a standard encounter-based system where battle begins with the allies and enemies in a face off, Tsuchida suggested that FFXIII's battles will begin with the player noting, "Oh, here's an enemy."
Players will be able to change the battle conditions to an extent. Tsuchida gave the example of a player considering what can be done in order to create a winning situation for an upcoming battle.
This doesn't mean we'll be getting an evolved version of the FFXII system either. Toriyama stated that the FFXIII battle system will be something that's not quite encounter based and not quite seamless. Players will have a new way of getting into fights with enemies."

I hate turn based RPG's - they feel like they haven't evolved since RPG's started hitting consoles with the 2600.
I don't buy turn based - no matter how good the story looks or the graphics are - BUT real time combat RPG's are my absolute favorite genre.
I do like the "optional" style like...
Real time with pausing to issue commands. Best of both worlds. Think Baldur's Gate 2, FF X, FF XII and Fallout all rolled up into one glorious battle system.osirisomeomi
That works well and allows you to choose depending on your mood.

Then you are not a FF fan. My point is, if people who never played FF wants an action game, i believe square enix can deliver some sort of action game with some RPG elements to it and name it whatever they wish. But FF is all about random encounters, hard boss fights, leveling up, great story, good character customization, turn based fights, and so on
ive never even played FF beforeI feel you on that statment man, but these times are changing. Just the other day I heard a rap song that sounded like it was being looped and I officailly declared myself old. I grew up during the atari era so that truly dates me some. Alot of the new gamers today started on the PS2 so they will be out of touch and us OG gamers need to show them how it all began when it wasn'y always about textures and polygons. Sprites and vextor graphics for life, lol...
Amen!
I'm only 17, turning 18 in a few months. But I consider myself OG
I started gaming at around 3 or 4. My dad was mid 20's so he was still into gaming, thats how I got into it.
I loved those days, now everyone goes  over textures. Every game has to score a 9 for it to be consideredgood and it has to be photorealistic with absolutely no flaws. Sad they dont understand that gaming is about having fun. Their missing out on alot.
iagree with you donrob. XD im 19, does that qualify for an OG? sprites and turn based ftw!
I would really like to know, since i kinda feel like i was the only one who didn't like FF12... the critics, the players, just about everyone seems to love every single detail of that game. I for one hated that board system, or the gambit system. But nothing compares to that horrible real time fights... i mean, if i wanna play a MMORPG i play WOW, not FF. Well maybe i'm just way offalucardio
Yeh, I thought the gambit system was pretty good, but only because the realtime battles were awful. It just didn't feel like a FF game. I remember sitting down for hours planning out strategies to beat Ozma on FF9, and the delight in beating him in 3 turns and getting the final card was just unbelievable.
FFXII did nothing for me, the story didnt grip me at all, the battle system ive mentioned, the characters the artwork, all were just terrible in comparison to VII, VIII, and IX which in my opinion are the very best.

I Agree I love turn based battles...Maybe a slightly real time system like in grandia can be put in for a little excitment but I'd rather have turnbased.
I want it to be real-time. Faster game-play. Thomas-Crown
I disagree!!! :P
i hate FF it is IMO the worst series of games and needs to die
Th3James
LMAO!!! seriouslY?? wow damn lol well number 10 was my favorite one because of all the emotion and stuff... hands down really nice game .... but i do prefer kingdom hearts style gameplay because that command list was just too awesome.... REAL TIME FTW!!!!

Turn-based. Because FFXII's gameplay was lackluster and unbalanced.
not to mention magic and specially summons were pretty much useless
i agree completely. FF12 was a bust in about every aspect of a true FF game, but i haven't lost faith in 13 just yet.
Both. I'd love to have a Vagrant Story/Parasite Eve type of battle system.IsNotInterestes
never played Vagrant Story(still looking for it even)
Parasite Eve had a great battle system. You don't see too many done like that, but those were a party of only one character. It wouldn't work as well in an FF game if u ask me.
I'm sorry, but how was FFXII real time? Certainly, that was an option available, but last I checked, the game was skewed such that real time gameplay was more or less impossible against any real challenge (like any of the last few elite hunts).
EDIT: And to clarify, last I checked, FFXII just added a timer to each turn. Hardly "real time" and how we get from FFXII to hack and slash, as some posters have said, is a mystery to me. The simple fact that _openeing a menu_ paused all gameplay in FFXII to me signified that the game was still very much turn-based and that the timers were just a weak attempt at marrying JRPG with WRPG conventions.
