I don't know about "chewing discs", but I've always found that it was safer, in the long run, to have it horizontal. In that position it won't fall over quite as easily if hit or jarred.
But if you have it standing up it is more likely to fall over

I don't know if it would have exploded, but that WOULD have chewed up the disc. That happened to a couple of my friends.
