Does the original ps3 really break easily?

Hi. I've been asking around lately on which ps3 I should get. The refurbished original 80gb ps3 seems perfect for me. I dont mind the largeness of it and the design is perfect for my room. I also will only be playing games on it so i dont need all the extra hard drive space. I can get it for half the price of the slim at a nearby electronics store.

The problem is, people have been telling me that the originals will eventually get the YLOD after using it and i'll have to pay $200 for repairs. Is this true?

I have the 40 gb spiderman bundle which i've had since the beginning of 2007. No problems at all. Like all electronics there are a percentage of hardware failures. It just happens. I know people who still have launch systems running perfectly.

i have a 60gig launch and an 80gig that i got a few months later both work fine. and i thought the repairs were $150

some people here on these forums might say yes it does, but I still have my orig 60 gig with bc, and most people at my work still have their old model ps3s running finejohnlennon28

I think the 'phat' PS3's are stronger than some think.

Any walmart i go to has phat's set up to play, and they are always caked in dust and grime and still run quite and solid. not to mention most of my friends ps3's are in the same shape, still running great.

I had mine about 2-3 since it was launched (forgot date) but should be at least 3 years and its still working and I play about 20+ hours per week with the occasional frezze (maybe once every 5-10 hours and it goes back to normal )

Eventually pretty much all the fat models will get YLOD, some might be lucky enough to never get it, but they are in a minority, hell, we don't even know if the slim is YLOD proof yet, it's not been out long enough on the market for us to know.

Why you shouldn't fully believe the things you read on the internet. Repairs are $150. Personally, I'd buy new, and if I were you I'd just save some money and in the next month or 2 you will be seeing Move bundles.

for the most part fat works pretty well,lot of people don't take good care of their console

I have had the 40Gb and the 80Gb PS3.I can tell you that after a long while of usage,thier fans got louder and the game was getting hot so i traded em both fora 250Gb Slim,the experience with it has been fine so far but i cant conclude as it hasnt spent as long as the Fat models i used to have

The old PS3's do tend to get louder as time passes, but if you properly manage it (vacuum vents, keep well ventilated), your chances of having problems is slim.

My 60 GB has more than 3 years now, the only thing that I did was replace the thermal paste 3 months ago, and I plan to do this again after 2 more years. But this was a preventive maintenance, it really never gave me any problem.

My 20GB launch model PS3 lasted from when the PS3 first shipped to about 2 months, so unless mine was a special case, they last a while. Though, they do tend to heat up on the side wihere the disc is inserted, though the HDD is on the other side so that shouldn't be much of a problem unless it happens to get really hot. In my experience however, it doesn't heat up near enough to start a fire, but I kept it on top of a cardboard square on my floor just in case.

My 2 cents:

I still own an original 60GB model(with upgraded 500GB 7200RPM hard drive) and I use the hell out of it. It's my primary DVD and Blu-Ray player, it's usedabout 6-7 hours or more a day for gamingand holds all my digital camera videos and photos. I've never had any problems with it. The first 2 years I had it was standing vertically, and for the last 2 years it's been horizontal(laid flat). The things a beast. I've never had any problems.

The only thing is my original controller gave out. I use theanalog sticks pretty aggressively and i grinded it away so much that the plastic dust/residue got into the axis (I'm guessing) and now it gets stuck. It's not a big deal and I'm sure I can take them apart to fix/clean them but I've been wanting to get the rumbles for a while and that was a good excuse.
