Is there any way to get rid of that black background sort of thing which is present when certain movies don't take up the whole screen ?

Honestly you should be using the PS3 for blu-ray movies. Which is what it plays. DVD format is PS2. Sure it can play it but... it can play PS2 games at well and look at how they sound and look graphically. Not so good.

I'd love to, but a DVD is about half the price of a Blu-Ray, and when you don't earn any money, it makes it look much more attractive. :P

That said, i did buy Dark Knight on Blu-Ray just to see what HD movies looked like. Amazing.

Because I have a 42 inch tv, dvds look pretty naff when its playing on my ps3. That is why I bought a dvd upscaler to make dvds look great even on large hd screens. If I were you I would just stop watching dvds on my ps3 and start watching blu rays. Honestly I havent bought a dvd in over a year and use my ps3 to just watch blu ray movies. Just watch your dvds on your dvd player, its much more sufficient.

PS3s can upscale dvds as well though. Anyways, bluray truly is the way to go.

The Black Bars on some Movies are there because of the aspect ratio the Movie was originally filmed in. A lot of Black bars are caused by Widescreen Movies, that are seen on a TV in a "letterbox format". To get rid of the black bars, you have to play with the format options that your tv may have; as in "zoom", "full', "just".

This site explains things much better than i can. > http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/anamorphic/aspectratios/widescreenorama.html

btw: I have 800 SD DVDs, and 8 Blu-rays. I have a 32" LCVd, and a 37" LCD. The PS3 upcoverts the regular DVDs so well, that for me, the Blu-rays increase in PQ is not enough to justify the price.

I have watched SD DVDs on a 50" Panny Plasma. The PQ was very good. Good enough, that if I had a 50" Flat Panel in my house, there would still be no reason for me to concentrate much cash on Blu-Ray.

I pay 3.00 to 5.00 for SD DVDs, and no more than $10.00 for BR. I have been very impressed with the PS3's upconversion ability.
