hmm...I was just thinking about this.

The 60 GB models in North America have the EE while the new 80 GB models will feature Software Emulation for backwards compatibility. Emulation method is one of the biggest reasons for the price cut as it cuts production costs down for Sony.

Everyone knows that EE plays all ps1/ps2 games while the emulation method only plays some of them as of right now.

Besides the above, are there any other differences betwee the two? Is one better quality than the other or does one upscale better?

Well, if Sony takes a page from Microsoft on this whole emulation thing then it will suck badly. If they are able to release weekly updates to their emulation catalog then things will be fine.

well look if sony like yugga says takes a page from microsoft things will be bad, and we all know not many of the good xbox games are capable of runnin on 360 , like say timesplitters, driver , nascar 05-02 um IF sony does this where only certain ones make it then by bye to timesplitters cause we all know 360 isnt capable of handling it the only option left , either keep using old consoles or the wii which would play all the timesplitters or good games on gc so if that happens i surely dont think this will help sony as nintendos console is far ahead and not making ps3 100% compatible would make things interisting for those without ps2s and ps1s

There is no "vs" about it really. All PS3's (including original models with EE Chip) have and use the software emulation.

Software emulation is just part of the OS (firmware updates) each new firmware comes with more compatibility on the emulation side.

Sony is worlds beyond Microsoft in their software emulation package. Sony is atleast above 80%, while Microsoft is still hovering around 30-35%.

While 80% is not the 97%+ from the hardware emulation, it's still great, and I would take that if Sony stopped there. I doubt I have a game that wouldn't play.

98% was hardware emulation(with the EE). Software emulation is probably between 80-85%...which is still great in my book.

I find the BC of my PS3 (PAL) fine, it plays all my games without any problems.

Also I'd like to stress the issue that Sony have always been planning this and it should come to no suprise to anyone.

As of right now, none of the PS3s are 100% backwards compatible, but the backwards compatibility issues with some games will be corrected over time through system updates. You can check backwards compatibility for the specific PS2 games you're worried about at this site.
