lets post all are finding under one roof

PS3 does not supportDivx Codec 1.1

Most Divx and Xvid files do work. some dont so really just try all your content see what works and what doesn't

also most Xvid files that end in .avi do work. but once again some just do not.

With that said i have spent the better part oh 5 or so hours going through all my videos tracking down leads on the internet ect ect. i found Most older Divx and Xvid Formats do not work on thePS3 (1.1) i have read in a few place 3.1 and up works just fine! if you are having issues with Divx or Xvid files that you think should work. i would recommend rencoding them to a later version

Yea, I just tried some avi's and they didn't work. I'm also sad about divx 1.1 . Hopefully this will all be fixed soon.

I can confirm that AVI files do work, I just watched one.

it was also labeled xvid on my pc, but the ps3 said it was divx, so it may have just been mislabled.

I don't know what you're all on about. I just tried a myriad of xvid encoded files all in the .avi containers and they all worked, with better quality it seems than my 360. But I need to look closer to come to that conclusion. Also, my divx encoded files in the .avi containers worked. I have not tried wmv since I have nothing in that format.

I have an AVI file on my HDD and it plays just fine.

I think it has to do with which divx codec was used to encode the file, because I remember hearing that it doesnt support anything before 3.11 or some such number.

since what I'm watching is the latest episode of the simpsons, it was likely encoded very recently.

I just started my ps3 and played an avi file... The thing is that the ps3 recognizes it as a divx file and plays it with no problems. Maybe some of the updates were buggy? who knows

Beside Divx, there are a few more popular divx like encoding scheme like Xvid, which is gaining popularity nowadays ever since Divx turned into adware package. While Xvid can play Divx fine, I doubt the support is vice-versa. Divx 3.11 IIRC can enable some kind of content protection, sony may choose to ignore those copy-protected content to avoid hassle with media firms.
