I think the blu-ray drive of the PS3 uses different lenses for games and movies. Maybe, I'm guessing here, the lens for the movies is damaged...

I would say that is a possibility that the blu-ray drive is going, but if it's playing games alright then it seems improbable. I would get a blu-ray lens cleaner and try that first. The blu-ray drives in the ps3's aren't exactly rock solid though. They have good visual quality, but they aren't made to last forever. Though, this usually ends up with a disk read error and you just can't play any blu-ray disk including ps3 games.

No I'm not saying that. Believe me you would know if itwas **** up. Try using a cleaner first and see if that helps. If not there are ways to repair it by yourself (with the help of videos in youtube) but this I would not recommend since it voids the warranty.

I say try using a different HDTV, then try using a different cable at different settings(if you know someone you can borrow from).

Could be the cable, it hapens sometimes.

If the games are fine then it could be the cable because there could be a defect in the cable somewhere. Also you may be able to reconnect the HDMI cable and fix a pin connection problem. Most of these pins are gold plated that is great for keeping heat down and maintaining connection with one draw back and that gold is soft and becomes distorted if it's R&R a lot. I have had crazy problems in the past and found that one end of the HDMI cable has gotten knocked slightly lose. When this happens it effects either video or audio and usually not both at the same time.
