I know we've seen dozens of these but bear with me.

I've been trying to find this poster for an hour now.

http://images.wikia.com/metalgear/images/d/d0/Mgs4_promo.jpg

Now this is a promotional poster for MGS4 that came out before the trailer was released. MGS fans can correct me but I'm gonna name the characters from left to right.

First is Vamp. No doubt about that.

Second is Meryl. You can tell by her hair and toned body.

Third is Raiden. He has the sword as well as the long hair.

Fourth is Liquid Ocelot.

Fifth is Solid Snake. He's wearing his bandanna.

Sixth is Hal "Otacon" Emmerich. He has the same hair, and is fixing is glasses, like he did in Metal Gear Solid.

Seventh is a MYSTERIOUS DUDE WITH AN EYEPATCH. I'll get back to him.

And last is a girl in a hood. Anyone who's seen the trailer knows that a hooded girl appears in it. This is Naomi, from MGS1.

***

Now... On to man #7. You'll notice that every one of these characters, 'cept #7 (Cuz we don't know who he is, yet), is a reappearing character. Why should they break the trend and add a new character to this group of oldies?

That is why I believe this man is Big Boss.

That would make him a reappearing character. We've even played as him in MGS3. Now look at his appearance. HE HAS AN EYE PATCH. **Spoiler** Ocelot shot his eye out in MGS3. Look at his legs. They are the thinnest in the group, even thinner than Meryl's. Also, notice how EVERYONE is posing. He isn't. He's standing upright, with his body completely straight and his arms at his sides. I think he's sort of a cyborg zombie. Sound's ridiculous, I know. But didn't Frank Jaeger AKA Gray Fox die too? He came back to life, super-powerful in a robotic body. LOOK AT THIS MAN. He's creepy. His body is too rigid. His legs seem unnatural (Artificial? Robotic). He has an eye-patch even. His face looks expressionless and aged. In fact he looks the oldest in the group. Which is correct. Naked Snake was definately older than Ocelot.

That's why I say Man #7 is a cyborg Big Boss!

This is totally irrelevant lol, but I just thought of this.

In the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots logo, the 'L's in the logo are all upside down '7's. In this list of characters, man #7 appears to be big boss. Far fetched? Yes, I know. But whatever. It's late at night, lol.

That is actually Big Boss. Great job noticing it. A few of the top MG "historians lol" have also noted that it is him. Since this was very early though they may have changed the story a little so who knows in the end.

Plus Big Boss was never killed. He was assumed dead when the ex FoxHound members demanded Big Boss' ashes and like 1 billion dollars or something like that in Metal Gear Solid 1. But the last we ever saw timeline wise of Big Boss was Metal Gear 2 where he escaped Solid Snake and lived. So it seems almost a certain that we will see Big Boss in MGS4 probably as you noted kinda like the Grey Fox in MGS1.

You would think also that with MG1 and MG2 (the originals) being all about Solid Snake vs Big Boss the real Snake that we should have some kind of closure to that since there was never any final meeting between the two. Especially with the success of MGS3 and Portable Ops it would be insane not to bring back the original Snake where it all started to close out the story. Kojima is very smart and maybe the reason he came out with MGS3 and Ops was because that part of the story had to be told to fully understand MGS4. If Big Boss was going to be left dead then why make these new games revolving around him? Kojima could have just left him dead and used these new games to progress the Solid Snake story. He had to go back to the begining to understand the original snake so we can fully appreciate the impact of him being in the final chapter.

Then again this is just my opinion, I could be wrong. But that for sure is Big Boss in the poster lol.

Actually, the sevens more likely symbolize Kojima's reference to Genesis when Ocelot talks about how Snake is like Cain being cast out by Eve. Somehow, I'm sure he plans to involve the other two sevens as a kind of moral to the story; not all killing is murderous...Or something to that effect.

Genesis 4:23-24

And Lamech said to his wives Ada and Sella: Hear my voice, ye wives of Lamech, hearken to my speach: For I have a slain a man to the wounding of myself, and a stripling to my own bruising.

Sevenfold vengeance shall be taken for Cain: But for Lamech seventy times sevenfold

Just got this off of a Wiki. I know they aren't very reliable but this seems to be a direct quote from Metal Gear 2

"In Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, when the player calls George Kessler during the final battle, he mentions a rumor about Big Boss receiving cybernetic "snatcher" organs from Dr. Petrovich after losing his limbs, right ear and right eye (which was already missing in the original game) in battle. While some fans interpret this as a jab directed at Snake's Revenge, it's a reference to Kojima's previous game, Snatcher. Dr. Petrovich appears in Snatcher as the founder of the snatcher project."

"losing his limbs". Like I said, creepily thin artificial legs on the poster? And Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was the last appearance of Big Boss.

lol yay. So I'm not delusional. And you're right; we never actually see a definitive death. Also, why expand on his past if he's dead and gone. There must be a good reason to dedicating two games to telling the backstory of Solid Snake's father.

If I remember correctly when they announced portable ops they said it is connected to mgs4, and it cleared up many things like the man with the same code name as Null we know the one with that code ofcourse, and we know they wanted big boss to join the patriots to forfill here dreams which I is the boss.

All I want know to play the game and enjoy playing as snake and it will be great to for SOLID SNAKE to face BIG BOOS for the 3rd time maybe he will help cure snake from old age he is having.

Can't wait.

i think your right but also i think there are other plausible theories like

1) big boss never died he just simple hid for years

2) it could be a 4th unknown clone of the 'les enfant terrible' project

3) it could be solid snake rapidly aged due to something about him being a clone

Big Boss in MGS4 ! :? that... would... be... AWESOME !

Metal Gear Solid always has big twists in the story and since MGS4 will be the final MGS game I can actually see Big Boss appearing in it and hopefully some more colossal twists which we don't know yet.

MGS4 will be an epic game in every sense of the word.

Good theory.

Off Topic, can anyone point me in a direction where it explains the story line simply? I've played MGS (PSX) MGS2 (PS2) and MGS3 (PS2) and still don't know wtf the "overall" plot is. Somebody help me :(

I know for a FACT that Big Boss CANNOT appear in MGS4 in PHYSICAL FORM. I think its obvious to ANY MGS fan. The know that Big Boss has always had an impact in all MGS games, including MGS1 and 2. But in MGS4, Big Boss will most likely be TALKED ABOUT by Solid Snake and Liquid, i imagine Liquid might still be in search of Big Boss' "Soldier Genes" like he was in MGS1. Also remember that Big Boss' body (more like corpse actually) is 100% BURNED (from MG2: Solid Snake) and kept inside a chamber that absolutely freezes his body in all its entirety and guarded by the USA government. I HIGHLY DOUBT Big Boss will appear in physical form in MGS4.

Im about to explain something to you that i hope you understand. At the E3 06 trailer you see Solid Snake holding a gun up to his mouth, he looks like he's ready to commit suicide. Why?????

~ Big Boss and The Boss- "And the one who inherent the title of Boss will face an endless existence of battle."

let me clarify, The Boss was the most experienced soldier during WW1 and WW2. During the Cold War...Naked Snake had to kill her in order to complete his mission, The Boss already knew this and accepted her death by the hands of her most loyal companion EVER.

Now fast forward to MGS: Portable Ops for the PSP...

~ Big Boss - "NO! Im NOT gonna live my life the way the Boss did!". Shortly after the events of Portable Ops, Big Boss leaves the US government forever and goes on to form the ultimate haven for soldiers and mercenaries called....Outer Heaven.

Did anyone manage to catch that? The Boss AND Big Boss....2 of the most respected soldiers in all of history wanted either death, or to not live with the burden that the title which "Boss" brings upon the achiever. The title of Big Boss is that of a sad, burden brought upon the user. Why? Obviously, The Boss and Big Boss felt that way if you played, as you can cleary see the sadness in Big Boss at the end of MGS3.

Now...lets again fast forward to Solid Snake's E3 06 trailer, where he's ready to pull that trigger.

~Solid Snake [says] - "But theres one more thing i must do. One last punishment i must endure. I have to erase my genes, wipe the MEME(memories, genes, your legacy, etc.)from the face of the earth"

And then he says at the end credits..."Some legends are MEANT to die".

Now why did he say all that? I believe that Solid SNake does not wish to carry on the legacy of Big Boss with him. It was a burden for the The Boss. A burden for Big Boss. And another burden for Solid Snake. What Solid Snake is try to accomplish by committing suicide is...that he wants the BREAK the chain of Big Boss. How one person gets it, then it goes on to the next,. and then the next. Specifically with the Snakes.

And by killing himself, he'll break the chains of the Boss title...and not pass on, "sins to the next generation".

I really hope some of you guys caught the meaning of the Boss title.

The TC's theorysounds very believable to me.

BTW, did anyone else noticed that before that sceneinone ofMGS4's trailers that show's a man with a full face mask and when he take's it off he looks like young snake (the one with the statues) it is written "Some legends must die" or something like that?

I think that man will replace Solid Snake somewhere in the game, I mean, Snake will die in the middle of the game and this man will replace him. My theory anyway.

i'd say that the overall jist of the series is the evolution on modern warfare, like metal gears. including soliers such as solid snake and his brothers.

Interesting. But I have to agree with what some people have stated, that Big Boss's appearance will probably be in the form of a flashback cinematic, and not part of the actual progression of events.

Yeah, The Solid Eye System I think they call it.

Anyway, I don't think the boss will be in MGS4, he's dead and burned up. But what the hell, anything is possible I guess.

That's why I say Man #7 is a cyborg Big Boss!

i think your right man i looked at the poster and that guy is big boss can tell by the eye patch

And Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was the last appearance of Big Boss.

man! its been so long since I've played metal gear solid (on the original ps) that I can't hardly remember any of these characters.

I'm going up to the storeon my way home from work to pick up...

Metal Gear Solid (for PSONE)

Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty (for PS2)

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater (for PS2)

These are all good and playable on the PS3 correct? I need to refamiliarize myself with the story line and characters before MGS4 comes out

grey fox did not die.... he almost died...

Uhm about big boss....what can I say that so many have not.... kojima said he died forever....but if he did not then it would not be a surprise... you killed him pretty bad in mg2 so I don't really see it hapening...besides the fact that he would be very old but then so was the end...

Maybe they extracted some dna and cloned him as a weapon against solid snake or something but because the dna was tainted they got a very old mishapen big boss...posibility I think so...

Wow. I posted this last night at 1AM and I wake up and find 40 odd replies lol. Anyway, I've never actually PLAYED MG and MG2, (I have them on the Subsistence disc, just can't bother. Truth is I'm stuck in MG. lol) so I didn't know the Big Boss' body was burned up. I figured it was a body as FOXHOUND demands his body in MGS1 not his ashes. Also, if Big Boss was a cyborg in Metal Gear 2, and if he's still alive, or brought back to life like Gray Fox, then he would be a cyborg now. Hence the creepily thin legs.

Big Boss' kids were cloned in something called Les Enfants Terribles. 'The Terrible Children'. First was Liquid Snake, with all of Big Boss' dominant genes. Then came Solid Snake, with all the recessive genes. Last was Solidus, a mix of dominant and recessive. Apparently 5 others were made but killed off so that the focus could be shifted to those three.
