I sent my PS3 (Original launch model 60GB) to Sony about a year ago to have them fix my over heating problem, red blinking light. I don't play as much as I would like and I take very good care of my systems. I opted to keep my original system rather than take a new slim model. It's only been just over a year and this last weekend I was playing and about an hour into the game, my system just pooped on me again.

My question is, has anyone here sent their systems in for repair and did they break on you again? I am trying to decide if I should send my system in again for repair or if I should just get a new slim system. I would really like to keep my old system, but if it breaks on me every year, I don't know that it is worth it.

my launch 60gb died after 2 years I sent it to sony to fix and about 2.5 years later it died again so I bought a slim

i took good care of it but I played it a lot probably a good 20+ hours a week

That's not too bad I guess. It's still a while before I can afford to either send my system in or get a new one. Maybe another price drop might happen after E3. Thanks for your input.

When my original PS3 - 60B model died in 2011 I was under warranty and I was simple given newer version, The PS3 Slim. To be honest, this is your second time it had given up on you - maybe it's time to upgrade to the newer model. It's sad to be honest, I enjoyed my 60GB model very much but what can you do, this generation had been terrible from hardware perspective.

Sigh, I had really wanted to keep my original system. I could complain about wanting to play PS1 and PS2 games, but I still have both of those system and they work just fine. I just really like the look of the original system, plus it's not like it was a cheap system, you would think they'd work far longer when taken care of. Time to save up, I have way too many games I nee to play and pass, I just hope my game saves are not corrupted like last time.

Yeah, it has been bad, I had another system give me the dreaded RROD and then its replacement stopped working on me after an update.

You can fix it yourself for a lot cheaper if you have the patience and know-how. I fixed mine a few months ago.

me too,You can fix it yourself for a lot cheaper if you have the patience and know-how. I fixed mine a few months ago.thanks

as far as i know, sony does not send back your original unit but a refurbished one... i had two refurbished units die on me on their eleventh and tenth months... maybe i was unlucky but my experience is that you cannot trust a refurbished system, let alone a first generation ps3, as they tend to get the ylod over a certain period of usage... after i bought my slim when it was launched in september 2010, i did not have a single problem... i am a moderate player with an average playing time of around 7 - 15 hours a week, sometimes a lot more and sometimes not at all depending on the game/s i am playing at the moment...

Thanks @jth182, I think I will do that just so that I can remove my game from the drive AND back up my saves. I have a very IMPORTANT save file in there. It's the first play my friend has ever had of Kingdom Hearts and she loves the game. I just want to move it to a memory card so she can play it on the PS2. I will end up having to go with a new slim system, as some of you have said, refurbished can't really be trusted.

If you want to keep your saves, I'd recommend getting that PS3 fixed by a third-party repair shop. There's too many of them to count. But the important thing is that they have to offer a REBALL service, since that's the only way you're going to get any lasting service out of a PS3, and presumably moreso than any refurb that Sony sends back. It should also be a bit more resistant to future YLOD problems due to leaded solder. On top of that, since it's the same PS3, you keep your saves. The only downside is that it's expensive, usually from $100 (NOT including shipping and packaging) to $150 shipped. Still cheaper than a newer PS3 with no PS2 compatibility, and you keep your saves.
