Wow. Thats actually a pretty good question. For the most part a safe bet for me is anything that isn't inpsired to much by the middle ages. In short IX and XII are easily my least favorite incarnations. Either way it's hard to top your first so VII as it had the best combination of story and gameplay. After that X did a good job of reviving the series, and whos to say anyone saw what was going to happen to Tidus near the end. Then of course theres VIII. Some of the most loveable characters in all the series and a pretty good story to boot. Tried to finish VI but my game got deleted and after that I just lost interest.
The Characters in Final Fantasy VII have really stuck with me, but in terms of gameplay I really enjoyed Final Fantasy IX. Back to the old school class system but with good (at the time!) graphics.
My favorite FF is FF1 : P. I know it's not the best though. I think the best is between FFVII for being good of course and having that "it and IV just for being absolutely amazing for 1991, and still being awesome now. I haven't played IX or V though.
I can't decide between VI and VII. They were both great and I still play them to this day when I need a good JRPG experience since there's not alot out on the PS3 at the moment.
Without a doubt to me, 6 was the all time best, first game that ever gave me chills, amazing story, and a great deal of fun. Its also nice now that you can get it on the GBA and just play it on the DS , a great game on the go really.8)
