I just saw IGN's UK review, it receives 8.3 only which is quite unacceptable with so much hype on it.

I have few questions here before I pick up my pre-order next week.

Is this game like traditional JRPG? I hate traditional JRPG, and I think its features are dated, such as map puzzle (not enchancing gameplay experience and wasting player's time), stupid level system which player must waste hours doing leveling up before they proceed to next stage(i only want boss battle and avoid any unnecessary fight), and repetitive battle system. (lol watching the same animation for 1000 times is not fun at all.)

I read some articles and review abouts this game, and JRPG fans hate it because it's not like traditional JRPG. Is this the main reason that it doesnt receive positive review? Is this game friendly to non JRPG fans? cuz I like fast pace games.

It's linear and fast paced. So yes, because it's not a traditional JRPG, it's not getting the ratings. Really it's a mixed bag of reviews because some people like the new direction they went in and some don't. So you may like it.

Be unworried about the leveling part. FF13 is meant to be fast paced and grinding is not needed. I wouldn't get so far to say that you can ignore all the small monsters, but the possibility to avoid them is there. No random fights as in FF1-10.

The battle system seems to me more traditional than in most new JRPGs, but it definitely is very different from the old usual stuff.

Not sure if I understand "map-puzzeling" right, but the areas are mostly linear. Later in the game they get more open though. But I think it keeps being linear.

This is exactly why I will wait to buy the game. Some part seem good while others seem horrible.

I've been on the fence about this, waiting for the reviews to come out. Now that they're coming out, it sounds like a "wait for the price to go down" type game.

Im about half way through FF13 (Got my Ps3 EU copy early :) and must say its very very dissapointing. Theres very little strategy left within the battles, enemy variety isnt as grand as FFX or FF8 for that matter, you have no control over other characters, the first 1 and half hours of the game will litterally be an annoyance, all you do is walk straight and fight enemies with a variety of cutscenes, you have no indication of wtf is going on until 1 and half hours inthe game, the eidalons (SPOILERS) are great but also stupid, they all turn into some form of vehicle, and the traditional aeons/eidolons like Ifrit and Carbuncle who aint modified by those dumb mech things cannot even be summoned. I would go as far as saying its the first button bashing JRPG ever, because all you do is press X repeatedly for EVERY battle consisting within the 1 and half hour benchmark.

Overall - 6/10 from what i have played.

Yeah, I already cancelled my pre-order. I want Square Enix to learn their lesson from this. Don't fix what isn't broke, and don't do anything to tick off a Final Fantasy fan! They're obviously trying to make the game more accessible to the masses and in turn have removed almost everything so many of us have loved about the series for all these years. I guess FFX will always be the FINAL Fantasy. :(

I agree, but the reason I am still not sure if i believe the reviews and such, is that gamespots complaints are that it is linear and a character is annoying. FF has always been pretty linear and every JRPG has atleast one annoying character :P.

1st off: traditional jrpgs rule.

Ok now. Here's why FFXIII is gonna suck: Square is trying to please people like the TC.
Don't worry TC you're gonna love it. I'm sure you'll be singing the praises of this game for years to come. Perhaps influencing other n00bies to speak up and ruin this franchise even further by encouraging this kind of "progress." Like so many have done since FFX.

That was kinda harsh, and I'm sorry but the point is: FFXIII is more like "jrpg-light." It seems Square has finally made the series overly accessable.
So no worries about having to put effort into building your character, or having to think too much.Achieving justabout everything will involve simply putting in time. Not too much effort, next to none by the sounds of things.

I hope there's some reviewers out there willing to knock Square off their high horse with this one. They've had their head in the clouds for far too long; and it's reallybeenshowing in a bad way.

Hmm...just out of curiousity, why don't you like FF:X?

And what are some of your favorite JRPGS?

Maybe I am wrong but FFXIII seems anything but mindless with the whole paradigm thing and stuff.

There's definitely cause for concern. The single player Final Fantasy RPGs really aren't much fun to play anymore. They're gorgeous to look at, and make great movies. But they've become too linear and rigid, even beyond what you would forgive from a JRPG. Square lost their way ages ago.

Final Fantasy XIII is not a very good game, story is alright, graphics are fantastic, but its a game that I think can wear you down. The format of the game is pretty much battle, cut-scene, battle, cut-scene with no real cities, shops, or other people to talk to. In fact, other than the battles, cut-scenes, and the numerous save-points, there is literally nothing. I have to say that I am dissapointed with the game and I believe most people will be considering how much better the previous installments have been.

I moved my FFX rant to my GS blog. It got too long to post here. If you want to know why I'm not FFX's #1 fan Click here.

Some of my fav jrpg's: Dragon Quest series, Persona series, FF1-9, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Wild Arms 1+2, Xenogears, Breath of Fire(s), Suikoden 2, Mario & Luigi sereis (DS)...there's lots I could go on about but whats the point...

I'm not writing FFXIII completely off yet, but based on what I've heard XIII it's gone even further in the "attempted" story telling direction, and even further away still from the "thinking man's" game I've been waiting for for so many years. It'll have its moments I'm sure, and it'll be glitch-free and all that, but it's not the kind of game I'll be clamouring for on day 1 anymore.

Since when is an 8 a bad score? Even on gamespot it got a 8.5, which they qualify as 'great'.

The Game Informer review said the story is actually one of the game's low points. Apparently you're fighting for a cause none of the characters are actually sure they believe in and there's no real antagonist, i.e. Sephiroth, Kuja, Ultemecia, etc.

i will switch my pre order to GOW3...after all, poor review score will reduce its collection value, no need to pay $60 + tax for a 8.5 game now. i am sure it will drop to $30 by xmas, and I dont mind waitting that long since it's not a 9+ game nor a popular online game like mw2.

Haha. I'd rather mash square for ten hours then mash "x" for 60 hours. :P

Well thing is that the reviews are so diff. I read one today that said it is reall only lenier for a short whille. Then is gets better. So I'm not to worried about it. Plus if u like FF at all then u won't care. Maby u should just stop picki g it apart. And just play it.

See, I beg to differ. If you like FF at all then you'll most likely find tons of reasons to hate this game. I've been a FF fan from the very start, and from what I've read (in pretty much every review of the game) they've removed almost all the elements that have drawn me to the series for so many years. The only thing about FF that is still intact is really just the summons and chocobos. What's the point of a chocobo with no world map to explore?
