try the playstation site and it's formus, all I know the answer to is the friends messaging thing, it is more like email and your friends list is universal through all games and stuff

1) Yes, using a media server like Windows Media Player 11 or TVersity.

2) Not really instant messaging. It's more like e-mail.

3) It's called remote play. It allows you to access content on your PS3 from any wireless hotspot in the world using your PSP. You can also play select games through remote play as well, including all PS1 games, LAIR (though some controls will not work), and High Stakes Poker (or whatever it's called).

4) That's for you to find out. :P If you have any specific questions, ask them and I will answer. I'm not going to list every cool thing the PS3 can do.

you can use a program called the Red Kawa server (just google it). It allows you to transfer files between your computer and your ps3 via a webpage (that only you and anyone on your router/modem can see). The program has to be running and the page has to be up on your PC's browser (and PS3's browser obviously) in order for it to work.

The only con is that it only reads the first word of a file that has spaces in it (try renaming using underscores instead of spaces to solve the problem).

And yes, you can use perform in background option (assuming it's the appropriate file type)

You can use a media server (I believe somebody mentioned TVersity). It is a program that you can put files into and stream them on you ps3 (it reads TVersity as a media server)

Oh and about #4, that's too vague to answer, just mess with the settings and explore the store (put some music, pictures, and videos on there too)

EDIT: my bad, I misread your post, you can just stream it using Remote Play

It streams straight to your PSP. So, yes.
