I don't know who told you FFVIII is bad but they are wrong. Dead Wrong. Personally I like FFVIII better. FFVII has better characters but FFVIII has a better storyline and summons in FFVIII are actually useful so the combat although very similar is a little better I think. Personally I dislike Cloud and Squall. Just a pair of pus*y emo teenagers if you ask me. Although FFVIII has duo protagonists (sorta) and the other guy is called Laguna who is actually really cool.
I would highely recommend getting both but I'd say get FFVIII first and if you liked it a lot get FFVII.
The main reason I prefer VII is the battle system. It's based more off materia, and the VIII battle system is based more off Summons and Junctions. It tends to make battles take too long, especially when you get later in the game and the summon animations get longer. If only they were skippable...
I love the card game, though.
Right, I find it sad that FF9 isn't mentioned since it's the best one, it definitely has a lot more "fantasy" than for example FF7. In fact, FF7 is pretty mediocre compared to FF9 and FF8 in my opinion.
Idk is FF7 really worth the 10 bucks compared to 8?ReyzleonHonestly what I would do is go out and purcahse Crisis Core. Play that. it is an amazing game. Also by the time you are done u will be dying to see what happens in final fantasy 7. Yeah there will be a sharp contrast in graphics. But if you are looking for a great story and a game you will be sucked into, go with 7.
Final Fantasy 7 has ugly character models a boring/dated battle system and filled with emo characters going on about things while some dude who has some incest issues.
Final Fantasy 8 has some better character models, a convoluted magic system (which is really abusable once you get the hang of it) and an emo romance story.
FF9 also has some nice character models, the character growth system from Tactics, and an overall cute but meh story.
All feature fantastic music.
Edit: I guess I should add that all 3 are enjoyable games and you'll get your moneys worth regardless of pick.
Get IX instead. It's one of the best series.
Between VII and VIII, I would go with VII. I didn't enjoy the story for FF8, and the battle system was broken in many ways. The game forces you to use your GFs early on; all you have to do in battles is spam GFs, which made it easy and boring.

FFVIII doesn't force you to use GFs at all. You can easily get through the game without ever using a GF if you draw/junction magic properly. This being said drawing magic is rather boring so problems exist no matter what you decide to do.
Overall I'd say that FFVIII would be the better choice. This is completely opinion based, but overall I enjoyed it much more than I did FFVII.
FFIX is also an excellent option, but by mid-late game every enemy type seems to have some type of highly irritating move, which can quickly lead to aggravation. In terms of character customization I find this one to be the best of the PSX games, as it doesn't really allow you to create a team of carbon-copy characters.

Well force isn't the correct word, but you have to junction your GFs if you want to use items or magic during battles. Besides, they were overpowered, and there were no consequences for using the GFs.
