FFXIII was different, therefore it wasn't a good game? Nice logic PS3 board.

KH-mixerX
People didn't like it because it was a crap game with no creativity especially towards the end, not because it was different. Your logic is equally as unimpressive.

It wasn't a crap game. Ever since FFXII, they've been trying new things with the series, and everyone's been *****ing and moaning about it constantly. Both FFXII and FFXIII are completely competent games. But since they dared to step out of the realm of familiarity, everyone has to jump on the hate wagon. Do you have to like them? No. But disliking a game doesn't make it crap.

every single FF game is different from its precessor...yes FFXIII is a CRAP game and the dude with the black mage avatar already stated the reasons for it to suck

for a mediocre jrpg they're not bad. for the name final fantasy they're crap. ff12 had an open world with useless summons yet another "war" plot that wwas too twisty and turny for its own good which had an incredibly anticlimatic ending (let us not forget the bubble requirement for beating the game). ff13 was a long corridor with no towns, a meh battle system that doesn't let you have much control over your characters, forgettable music, 20+ hours of cg that tell no story (you'll need to spend a couple hours reading datalogs if you want to understand whats going on) and cliche anime characters mostly with the personality of ice coolers.

having been a fan since ff1 and playing it when it originally came out, i feel confident when i say ff13 was crap.

Nice opinion.

you just crushed everything that you said...yeah so I will answer to what you say first "the game is not crap just because its different you have to hate it?" Nice opinion

Make that three 8) Seriously though, I'd play a sequel. People treat FFXIII like it throws babies off buildings or something. It was a fun game. It wasn't the second coming or anything, but it wasn't a steaming pile of dung either.

FFXIII was great, I loved everything about it. I'd easily buy part 2 on the day its released. I really couldnt care less about all the hate this games getting, I think Square did a great job. To each their own.

Listen kid, I didn't literally mean "everyone." I guess I should've been clearer. I meant "a lot" of people claim it's a crap game because it changed up the formula from the norm. Which is totally not true. All I'm asking is that people don't call it a crap game. It isn't. Now, it's everybody's right as an individual to dislike it, but dislike doesn't equal mediocrity. Plain and simple. And that isn't my opinion, it's a fact.

Square Enix keeps complaining about how hard it is to develop RPG's on current gen hardware, even though other developers don't seem to have any such problems. In fact, other developers make some absolutely fabulous games in the genre. I think the only way we'll see anything good out of SE is to wait several years, maybe until the PS4 comes out, by which time they'll have perhaps come to terms with the PS3 and 360 hardware and finally be able to make something decent for them.

Maybe that's because their idea of an RPG is 30 hours of cutscenes literred with periodic sessions of you walking through a narrow corridor. HMMM.

No, you're not. Some people don't like it because it's too linear and stuff like that. The game's amazing though. My second favorite FF game, after FFX. I loved XIII. Battle system, graphics, story, characters, music, art design, pretty much everything is the way I like.

I love FF13, Im tired of the "zomg its linear!" crap. Who cares? That doesnt have any bearing on how good the game is IMO, It had a great story and some great combat. Theres plenty of games out that are linear but still good, people are just acting like spoiled brats when it comes to FFXIII.

It's funny because people who are defending this game claim that people who don't like the game have only ONE problem with it: it's linear.

There are a plethora of issues with this game that people didn't like. In fact I would argue that the linearity of the game is actually the LEAST prevelant problem amongst the populus who didn't enjoy the game. It's like an attempt to discredit the dissenter by claiming that the only reason they hate the game is as stupid as the game being linear.

In all of my bashings of the game, I never mentioned the linearity. I mention the melodramatic story, cheesy over-the-top dialogue, over use of cutscenes effectively taking the player out of the role (in the ROLE playing game, fundamental flaw), simplistic RPG aspects being half-assedly integrated into the system, utter lack of control in combat, etc, etc. I felt the game was poorly executed was clearly not geared towards the RPG community. It was more action game/movie than RPG and that's where the brunt of the negativity comes from. Not the linearity. If that were the case, FFX would have been as heavily criticized, which it was not.

FFXIII was lower than FFXII if you ask me.. and I loved FFXII.. I thought it was the ish... It was pretty fun... but SE are slacking.. They could make games so much quicker if they worked on one project at a time.. IMO..

This sums it up pretty well. FF13 has a multitude of flaws, from its oversimplistic aproach to battle/leveling up, to its horrible storytelling, annoying characters and uninteresting plot. Pretty much each and every aspect of the game with the exeption of the graphics has some issues.

Quoted for truth!

You said it perfectly. Final Fantasy XIII, in my opinion, had too many problems (many that you outlined). The story had a great concept (thank you, Kazushige Nojima) but ruined by horrible pacing (thank you, Motomu Toriyama). Apparently the characters were off to "save the world" but the problem is, who the hell are they? What are they saving again? Why should I care? Why did that person transform into a crystal? They give you a datalog but I don't want a datalog to understand what's happening. As Yahtzee said, "The player is meant to be weaved into the story, not handed a pamphlet to explain what's happening." That's poor story-telling.

Also, the dialogue is cringe-worthy. Seriously, that dialogue is worse than Resident Evil games. Let me just repeat that, I'd rather listen to "a Jill sandwich" than hear the words, "Hero", "Pulse", "Cocoon", "focus", and "SERAAAAAH!!!" uttered overdramatically by these wooden characters.

Also, the summons were WORTHLESS. Just pointing it out. They were WORTHLESS. They do less damage than your characters' weakest attacks do, take forever to animate, and worst of all after they disappear, the damage meter drops to zero forcing you to build it up all over again or endure a 20 minute battle.

And before anyone starts, no, I'm not a "hater." I WANTED To like XIII. I really did. I even pre-ordered the game and played it for 6 hours straight the day it released but it was disappointing and terrible. What's ironic is the linearity didn't bother me that much. I've played linear RPGs before and loved them (e.g. Crisis Core, Eternal Sonata, etc.) but at least those games were appealing. This was awful.

I really hope Final Fantasy Versus XIII is amazing as it sounds. I love the Kingdom Hearts series so I trust Tetsuya Nomura.

z4twenny

I was almost tempted to post exactly this... D':

I actually thought it was really good. Admittedly not the best, but still really good.

i have to ask, good compared to what?

im not gonna go into the myriad of problems i had with the game. about the only thing i can't rip on are the graphics. if they make it i won't be getting ff13-2, i am still looking forward to ffvs13 as im not expecting it to be a traditional rpg, im expecting an action/adventure game and if the battle system pans out like its supposed to i think it'll bea lot of fun.

Of course, it's all my own opinion. But I did enjoy the pacing of the story and the gameplay and it bought something different to the genre. But like I said, it's good butnot the best.

This is what happens when greed, politics and red tape seeps into the game industry. We have sequels to a game who's golden rule was to never have sequels in the first place. SQUARESOFT IS DEAD. D E A D
