[QUOTE="ryuz4kee"]I love FF13, Im tired of the "zomg its linear!" crap. Who cares? That doesnt have any bearing on how good the game is IMO, It had a great story and some great combat. Theres plenty of games out that are linear but still good, people are just acting like spoiled brats when it comes to FFXIII.frostybanana
It's funny because people who are defending this game claim that people who don't like the game have only ONE problem with it: it's linear.
There are a plethora of issues with this game that people didn't like. In fact I would argue that the linearity of the game is actually the LEAST prevelant problem amongst the populus who didn't enjoy the game. It's like an attempt to discredit the dissenter by claiming that the only reason they hate the game is as stupid as the game being linear.
In all of my bashings of the game, I never mentioned the linearity. I mention the melodramatic story, cheesy over-the-top dialogue, over use of cutscenes effectively taking the player out of the role (in the ROLE playing game, fundamental flaw), simplistic RPG aspects being half-assedly integrated into the system, utter lack of control in combat, etc, etc. I felt the game was poorly executed was clearly not geared towards the RPG community. It was more action game/movie than RPG and that's where the brunt of the negativity comes from. Not the linearity. If that were the case, FFX would have been as heavily criticized, which it was not.
Quoted for truth!
You said it perfectly. Final Fantasy XIII, in my opinion, had too many problems (many that you outlined). The story had a great concept (thank you, Kazushige Nojima) but ruined by horrible pacing (thank you, Motomu Toriyama). Apparently the characters were off to "save the world" but the problem is, who the hell are they? What are they saving again? Why should I care? Why did that person transform into a crystal? They give you a datalog but I don't want a datalog to understand what's happening. As Yahtzee said, "The player is meant to be weaved into the story, not handed a pamphlet to explain what's happening." That's poor story-telling.
Also, the dialogue is cringe-worthy. Seriously, that dialogue is worse than Resident Evil games. Let me just repeat that, I'd rather listen to "a Jill sandwich" than hear the words, "Hero", "Pulse", "Cocoon", "focus", and "SERAAAAAH!!!" uttered overdramatically by these wooden characters.
Also, the summons were WORTHLESS. Just pointing it out. They were WORTHLESS. They do less damage than your characters' weakest attacks do, take forever to animate, and worst of all after they disappear, the damage meter drops to zero forcing you to build it up all over again or endure a 20 minute battle.
And before anyone starts, no, I'm not a "hater." I WANTED To like XIII. I really did. I even pre-ordered the game and played it for 6 hours straight the day it released but it was disappointing and terrible. What's ironic is the linearity didn't bother me that much. I've played linear RPGs before and loved them (e.g. Crisis Core, Eternal Sonata, etc.) but at least those games were appealing. This was awful.
I really hope Final Fantasy Versus XIII is amazing as it sounds. I love the Kingdom Hearts series so I trust Tetsuya Nomura.
