Alright, I'm gonna snag one this weekend. I was hoping for a price drop announcement, but sadly no go :(

I have a couple questions before I get one though:

A) Which should I get, the 80 gig or 160 gig Drake bundle? Is the 160 gig harddrive actually worth it? I don't plan on having any movies or anything saved to my PS3. I'll probably buy Drake anyways though.

B) Is the Bluray DVD remote worth getting?

C) Do PS3's have a history of breaking down like 360's? My original PS2 is still kicking no prob, and I've never had any problems with my 360, but I do recall both having a lot of issues for other people. Does the PS3 suffer from anything like RROD, and is it worth getting the extended warranty some stores offer?

Thanks for your help!

I don't know about the Blu-Ray remote, although you will get by just fine without it. PS3 have been extremely dependable, the only ones that have ever had problems are a handful of the original 60gb. I haven't heard of problems with other models. I would reccommend the Metal Gear Solid PS3 that I believe is still on Amazon. It's an 80gb and is the only model that you will be able to purchase with new PS2 backwards compatibility.

If you can afford to buy the DRAKE sku or can afford a seperate hdd purchase alongside a ps3, do it! lot's of ps3 games require 2-4gb installs to play and that can build pretty fast, not to mention home takes up 3gb, i'd go as big as i could for the hdd. hope that helps.

Although I would love to get the MGS Bundle, I didn't see any on amazon, and I don't want to get one off ebay cause they're super expensive...

But then again if he already has a PS2 why would he need one with backwards compatibility? Also, the Metal Gear ones have jacked up prices so you would probably be paying about $600+. If all you want is to play some new next-gen games and don't care much for the extra hard drive space then get the 80gb. If you want Uncharted, then buy it cheap online. There's no need to pay $100 just for that game and the hard drive space.

Get the 80 gig one. If you want to upgrade the hard drive, a 320GB drive is available for about $50 these days, so there's no point giving Sony extra money to toss you a 160GB one.

I'm actually glad there wasn't a price drop. I, myself, just bought the Drake's Bundle recently and it would have sucked if PS3 price dropped $100 with a bundle with inFamous or something. (Hey one can dream right?)

Congrats on the purchase and I believe you just go for the $80 GB one. It's cheaper since you aren't going to watch many movies or save anything. 80 GB is plenty of space. Just buy a used games like Drake, MSG4 like I did. They are usually in great condition and they all work. (I buy them off Criaglist for $40-50)

To be honest, once I'm done I just sell them back and trade for a new game unless I love the game like Killzone 2.

Nah, I dont have the remote but since you aren't going to way Bluray on it why would you need it? (I'm just using common sense)

I was pretty paranoid with the PS3 breaking down, I know 360's have like a 33% break down rate and PS3's only have a a 0.5% - 2% rate which is normal. But after I bought mine I don't even worry any more, just keep it in a good place and don't let it overheat. It should be fine.

Being a relatively new PS3 owner (3 months now)

I'll help you out (and a perfect time to join, PS3 has a killer line of exclusives, and a solid 3rd party support)

A) depending on what you wanna put on your PS3, 80 gigs will do you fine, if all you wanna put on it is Music, Photos, a few videos, and rest for game saves and game installs. If you have an external harddrive, you can stream vidoes, music, and photos right off of that. 120 gigs is nice if you wanna go the extra mile. if money is SOME concern go 80 gigs, that is more then enough if all you really wanna put on is games.

B) Would not recommend getting a Blue-Ray remote, the controller pretty much does the job for you. just learn how to work the controller and you should be good. never seen anything on the Blue-Ray Remote that was that big a deal.

C) no, never heard of any major issues, the thing is built like a tank. i've heard of Yellow Light of Death, but i don't really think their real. i'm a PS360 owner, and i love both, but i sometimes wonder if 360 fanboys are trying to make it into something.. but no buy with confidence, PS3 is well built.

It's real but not too common. My first lasted 11 months and my second has no problems. It can happen but it probably won't.

Alright thanks for the help everyone!

I think I've decided on the 80 gig and an extra controller, unless somebody walks up to me and offers me the MGS4 one at a reasonable rate. I have an external HD for my computer which I can use so I don't need the 160 gig.

I'm gonna pick up MGS4 right off the get go (It's my main reason for buying a PS3 lol), and since everyone recommends Valkyrie Chronicles I'll grab that too. Then, when street fighter 4 drops in price (I have it for 360 but I love the dual shock for fighting games...) I'll get that too.

Hope you enjoy your new PS3 :D! But yeah I have a 60gb & even though some games do require installations such as MGS4, there's still all that extra space to mess around with, not worth paying extra for the room unless you know your going to use it :].

Just on the remote control part, I have it and I'm happy with the purchase. Just for the fact that you don't have to burn your remote battery with it it's good enough for me. The only problem I see with it is the fact that you touch ANY bouton on it (by accident exemple) and it open the PS3 right away, can be frustrating sometime

just FYI, when it comes to working with the external hard drives. it needs to be in FAT32 format to be read, and make sure when it shows up on the XMB to press triangle and choose "Display All". That way it'll help navigate through all your folders, where as just entering in normally might not do it. enjoy man, my PS3 is virtually never turned off. either listening to music when i'm studying, play some Star Trek or Family Guy off of my external, and for the hell of it exit out and go play a bit of Uncharted or MGS4. yeah that's pretty damn nice in my opinion.

I am going to buy the 160 Uncharted bundle because I have never played the first Uncharted and want to get caught up on the story before part 2 comes out.

1) Hmmm, dont be too sure about that. Keep in mind that many PS3 games require installs, so it will eat away at your hard drive in no time. So, I recommend you get an 80GB ($400), and get this $100 HDD which is 500GB: .... damn, mozilla wont let me copy and paste.

Go to amazon.com, and search for a Samsung SpinPoint M60SHM500LI Internal 2.5" SATA-300 5400 rpm

There are 2 left, so hurry. If they are sold out, then look for a Western Digital 500GB 2.5" internal SATA. Amazon gives great discounts, normally they slash the price of these $200 HDDs in half :)

So basically youre getting a $500 500GB PS3, by comparison you would have payed the same price for 160GB.

Just be sure to get Uncharted, btw. Its awesome.

2) No. Your controller does the exact same thing, but this is really up to personal preference.

3) The PS3 is far more reliable than the 360, but some will inevitably fail, like all products. Watch out if your Blu-Ray player stops working, such that you can no longer play games or movies. And ive heard something about about a Yellow Dot of Doom, but Im not sure what that is. BTW, if your PS3 turns off by itseld and blinks the blue light repeatedly (or maybe it was green?), it doesnt mean it crapped out on you. It means that its way too hot and turned itself off to keep it from melting :) . This has never happened to me, but occasionaly some guy freaks out on yahoo answers and come in screaming that question.

Dont worry though, Ive had mine for a year and the worst that happened is that the controller stopped working. A quick restart solved that, and it only happened once.

Games to get:

inFamous (downloaded the demo, its actually very good! I was surprised)

Killzone 2

Uncharted

Valkyria Chronicles

MGS4 (THIS! THIS! THIS!!!)

LittleBigPlanet

Resistance 1 & 2 (Pretty fun, dont know why people hate on it)

Ratchet and Clank (hilarious)

Id recommend you rent...

Heavenly Sword (you may or may not like it)

Gran Turismo 5 Proluge (Everybody loves this, but it just didnt click for me)

Have a good one bro :)

So I found the MGS4 bundle on amazon (I live in Canada and I had to check the US site), and I'm curious if it's actually worth shelling out so much more money just for PS2 backwards compatability. Will I need memory cards anymore for PS2 games or will I be able to save them directly to the HD? and can I download game saves for PS2 games and transfer them through a flash drive?

Thanks again for everyone's help. I really appreciate it, I just want to make sure that I make the best choice since I'm throwing down a few hundred dollars.

80GB should be fine unless you plan on buying a lot of PSN games.

Don't get the blu-ray remote. Just use the ps3 controller.

PS3s are sturdy. I turned mine upside down while playing a game to demonstrate to friends that it's not impossible to make a disc drive that doesn't eat discs. I took the disc out and it still looked 100% new.

You only need ps2 bc if you have tons of ps2 games you want to replay. I never play ps2 games anymore. I'll go back to them once the PSP2 comes out.

You make virtual memory cards, which is stupid because they corrupt fairly often, but nice because you can make as many as you want and they're easy to back up and/or copy. Though keep in mind old PS2 game saves pulled via a card reader won't work if you want to download a save - they have to be PS3-saved PS2 files, which aren't quite as common.

I love BC since it has smoothing and 1080 upscaling.. Okami looks way better thru my PS3 and HDMI then it would on a PS2, especially on my LCD. You create a mem card from your HD. Dunno bout flash stuff.
