does this mean that my PS2-games won't look as "square" (in lack of a better term :P) anymore? i know it's a stupid question, but it's better to be a fool for 3 seconds than rest of your life! :P cause most PS2 games look kinda... shabby ever since i got them on my PS3 and HDTV.Â
Â
It's ok id rather have my PS3 games upscalled to 1080p!! Thats what i bought it for - true hi def goodnessDynamo79

How can you associate "upscaling" to 1080p and "true HD 1080p" togethor? That's like saying you took the 100*100 pixel thumbnail previews in the game-screen sections and upscaled them to 1080p in photoshop and called it true HD picture. You have to start with 1080p to have 1080p. Upscaling might make a 720p or lower image slightly less soft, but no way 1080p.
It would have been more important to allow 720p only games to upscale to atleast 1080i for those with 1080i only tvs. Upscaling older console games and such will make little difference. Even DVD upscalers are not just about plain upscaling, usually the only good ones are those with imaging chips designed around improving problems in mpeg like removing artifacts and some aliasing on top of upscaling to make the picture more smooth and natural on a large 50inch screen instead of a looking like mpeg. Since games have no mpeg noise being live and extreme aliasing, no way in heck is upscaling going to do much over the upscaling the tv already does.
great news..but does this improve the RFOM online?..i got the game all this months and there is no way i can get online.....i was just hoping if this update have somthing to do with that...thedark_soul

Any european owners feel a little put out by this? The reason we were told that the emotion engine removal in our PS3s was a good thing was that it would allow for upscaling. Now ALL PS3s can upscale PS1 and 2 games, even with an emotion engine chip? What advantage does our european PS3 give us now? Its more expensive and has fewer features (less backwards compatibility). Don't get me wrong, the upscaling feature will be excellent for my soon to be purchased HD TV, but i cant help but feel a little burned by sony.MattHall
Â
Don't get upset, yet. It's only announced for Europe so far.Â
at first this update sounded good to me but after reading whats really there, its just another update almost
all i care about is a PS3 game upscaling, like many others upscale 720p games to 1080i wouldve been the best thing to do for me.

looks like more waiting

Hopefully 1.80 will add more titles to that list, but its nowhere near the 99% b/c that the US has got. I've heard estimates of 60% of all titles being supported. We still dont have b/c for titles like mgs2&3 and GTA san andreas.

US is 97.5%.Â
US is 97.5%.Â

I stand corrected. Europe is still nowhere near that level of b/c, but hopefully we'll eventually be close.
I'm interested in the mention of home network file sharing, can anyone shed some light on how that'll work? Will i need anything besides my current set-up of a router-based network with a PS3 and windows XP based PCs?
I don't want to rain on anybodies parade but, is this update a sure thing? I mean I have a PS3 and I love it, and I love new firmware updates, but every week around this time we all get excited about a phantom update. Someone always hears something from some guy from some site. Then we get nada. I want to believe and I hope it's true, but at the same time I don't want to get hopes up...again. I hope I'm wrong.
It was posted on 1up and gamespot as well, so this seems legit.I don't want to rain on anybodies parade but, is this update a sure thing? This one had references to official Sony released information - it is legit
Seriously wallpaper more usefull than this.........lol - this allows me to take out the dvd player from the cabinet which is great. Yes the PS3 played dvd's, but horribly - I am going to assume that the upscaled pic is going to beat my dvd player handsdown
Why Sony is not capable to insert the WALLPAPERS! No costum Wallpapers, no costum soundtrack..I'm pissed, another useless update for me.
So_Young
I heard that's coming in the 2.0 update. I hope it comes with being able to replace in-game music.

No doubt 1.80 sounds like a good update, but 2.0 had all the major upgrades that people wanted. Damn that bunk info got me so excited.what is upscaling, will it make PS1&2 games look better on my HDTV?CHRIS_K_UK
Â
Upscaling is just a fancy way of describing the enlarging of a small image. It will make no visual difference with these old games. If it does, maybe 5%, but if people are thinking it's going to look like 720 or 1080p it mainly going to look like it was, because that's what it is. I mean we would need 12 megapixel digital cameras if we could enlarge 5 megapixels photos to 12mp and get the same result.
