I've searched pretty extensively, but can't find the blurb online. Game Informer quoted somebody at Sony a couple of months ago (Kutaragi, I think), who claimed that the graphical abilities of the PS3 could be improved by up to 40% through future firmware upgrades.

Can any of you hardware-savvy folks tell me if such a thing is really possible?

I'm assuming this would require dedicating one or more of the SPEs to graphical duties. Developers currently claim that they're not utilizing the Cell's full potential, but is it wise to partition the processor's functionality like this?

I'm no technerd but decentralisation of processes to different processors seems likely to have the future to me.

From what I read about a earlier firmware update, they have already done one run of that.

What they do is reduce the about of RAM required for standard PS3 feture's. thus making more RAM open for the devs.

Optimizing the OS can free up additional RAM and the one SPE (on demand) from the current OS requirements. Sony has already optimized the OS sum and freed up more RAM for devs and they will probably continue to do so in future updates. To drastically increase performance though is impossible through updates; devs just need to start using more of the SPEs.

Games have the graphics, not the PS3. Noticed how games looked better year after year on the PS2 without any firmware updates?

That is due to the devs learning the hardware. Having more hardware helps the devs make it look nicer. The devs do get the console down in time. But more RAM could only help.

The latest firmware update does a good job and with future updates it could get better. So if you have the latest firmware there isn't another firmware update yet. We get these updates when there finshed, so just keep checking for the latest updates from time to time (I check almost daily for the latest updates).

From what I've been reading, the recent firmware update only enhanced upscaling for PS1/2 games and DVDs. The Sony representative made a blanket statement about "increased graphical capabilities" and sited an improvement of approximately 40%. I'll post the quote when I get home this evening and can look at the magazine.

Actually the updates were done on the SDK side so the PS2 did benefit from changes.

Alright, a clarification:

It turns out the claim was not attributed to any specific source within Sony. The fullblurb from the August 2007 Game Informer (p. 37):

"Technical officers at Sony have claimed that the Playstation 3's audio and visual quality could be improved by 30 to 40 percent by further firmware updates. Sony has already used these to add features to the system."

Firmware version 1.80, which is the update responsible for the upscaling enhancements, was released in May. That means this estimated 30 to 40 percent increase, reported in August, would be above and beyond these previous gains.Output for all formatshas already beenboostedto 1080p, thebenchmark for HD resolution on the current generation of displays. I'd like to believe that any further improvements would entail an increase in actual rendering power.

What i do not understand about this is how this would affect people who do not have access to online. Would they have too make separate versions of the game?

It would be included on all games released from that point forward, just like 1.94on R&C.
