Heres a somewhat dry topic for the ps3 forum ( this may be new or old meh)

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/772/772929p1.html

This artical basically talks about ps3 users using the ps3 to map how genes change, A project put together with Sony and Stanford University. This application is in the next update i believe and is a stand alone application meaning you can not run games or blu-rays while it is working.
*opinion*
Although being the humanitarian thing to do while your sleeping or not home, and not to sound at all selfish these people get a grant to do this sort of work, i have an electric bill to pay so mathmatically i will be doing work at a loss. I will by all means turn it on while im at work/school/sleeping a few times a week. I do feel some insentive is needed all be it a pen or mouse pad or key chain.
On the not so materialistic side; this is an inovative way to show that gamers are not just a pack shlubs but a proactive community willing to help out, and do not only wish to blow people up. So I hope a few of you will atleast turn it on once.

Then again. You have an $850 electronic marvel sitting in your room.

You can claim:
1) I use it to destroy alien invasions in fantasy video games
2) I donate some PS3 time to find a cure for cancer

See... #1 is certainly more fun but #2 sounds a touch more noble.
Plus... You just might NEED that cure for cancer one day.

As someone who lost both parents to cancer I would encourage anyone with a PS3 to donate some time and electricity to this cause. It could make a HUGE difference in the coming years for cancer research.

The hardware is sold at a loss of around $300 by Sony.  Actual manufacturing costs pegs it near $850.

I'll do it to help, anything that can find a way to cure cancer is a must.
