The console is slow

To make up for it being slow it has to have data written to the hard drive

As far how many no idea, each game is different. Some games have a lot and some games don't even use the feature

Spreading false information is good or you could use the real reason which is to help speed up load times I dont know if your aware the 360 has this feature as well both for the same reasons.

You store the game data, not the whole game. That way your game will load faster. Not all games have the feature. Like Uncharted for example. All the data is loaded from the disk.

No you still do for authentication purpose otherwise you could just go rent the game and install it and viola 60 dollar game for 5 bucks, not that easy im afraid. So yes you still need the disk after installing once it sees you own the game the disk will stop spinning and read from the hard drive after that.

Nothing is going to take 4.6 GB or whatever. Game saves don't take up much room at all - if they took up 4 GB, it would take an hour to save a game, but it only takes a few seconds. Some game installs can be fairly large, but I doubt anything goes much over 1 MB. That's a one-time thing when you first start playimg a game. It installs some stuff on your hard drive because it can access it faster than accessing it on the disk.

You can certainly have over 100 games installed on a 120GB hard drive.

Google is your friend before you respond with mis info, some games will indeed use 4 gigs to install and yes games do fully install to the hard drive not everyone but some do unlike your nothing will use 4.6 gig response either.

Some games need you to install them. These game installs can range from 1000 to 5000 MB of space. You can tell if a game has an install by looking at the back of the game case and looking at memory it needs. If its over a GB, then chances are it has an install. Also, some games don't require an install but you can do one if you wan't to speed up loading times. And some games don't have an install at all.

Yes. Some games require it, some games you can choose if you want to or not if it has the option and some games don't have one at all.

The Blue-Ray on the PS3 is sluggish, thus the game devs rightfully put in a game install (as a option or mandatory) to speed up the loading times.

Its an install. Part of the game is pulled off the hard drive to reduce load times. Nothing to do with the consoles lack of speed, its because of the 2x bluray drive and less than optimum data organization on the discs. Other games seem to manage just fine without them.

It is an install. With most games, when you put the disk in there will be a promt on the screen that tells you to install. You are forced to do it, but the reason the ps3 does this is because it makes the game load quicker. Save games usually aren't bigger than 5 mb. Also, when you are finished playing a game, you can go to Game Data Utiltiy and uninstall the data, getting your memory back.

This is all i know from this...... 1. Some games require a install of info for faster loading times 2. Some give you the option to install or not 3. Some dont require an install at all 4. Installs take a LOT of space

It took 5 pages for someone to actually repond to a well kown fact. What with the gamespot's users? Are they gamers or what? Every time I enter to a thread where someone is asking something most of the responses are wrong.

-----

Even Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 have an install, it is just that it's so small (like 200MB) that you don't even realize it.

-But how do they speed up loadings so much with such small install you ask? Using the HDD for constant streaming.

Two games that I know that the installs are completely optional are Valkyria Chronicles and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. And if you don't install them, each loading could take easily like 40 second to 1 minute. :|

-----

fact: blu-ray drive speed on the PS3 is x2, DVD drive speed on the X360 is x12. If the PS3 blu-ray drive ran at x4, most of the games wouldn't need installs but considering that every PS3 comes with an HDD then, it is not a problem at all. You can always delete old data files and just keep the 3MB save files.

Few games require an install. It makes sure the game runs faster and cuts down any load times (on 360 thats the part where the console sounds like it's going to take off cause the disc is whirring round). Once you're done you delete it. I highly doubt your HD is going to be full to the brim.

Yes, some games take a huge install, MGS4 and Devil May cry 4 are the biggest i believe. DMC4 is like 7 gigs. They used to do forced installs, now games do optional installs. (Not all though). Most of the time it's to help games load faster Fighting games are a good example, like Tekken6 or SC4. It makes playing online go faster, big bonus.

120 gig is a huge amount really though, unless you do movies and such. Plus it's cheap to upgrade. You can get a 500gig HD for under a $100! if you figure and average of 4 gigs, which is giving a lot, you can put 30 saved games on the 120 gig! Approximetly

[QUOTE="tabben"]The Blue-Ray on the PS3 is sluggish, thus the game devs rightfully put in a game install (as a option or mandatory) to speed up the loading times.Gue1

It took 5 pages for someone to actually repond to a well kown fact. What with the gamespot's users? Are they gamers or what? Every time I enter to a thread where someone is asking something most of the responses are wrong.

fact: blu-ray drive speed on the PS3 is x2, DVD drive speed on the X360 is x12. If the PS3 blu-ray drive ran at x4, most of the games wouldn't need installs but considering that every PS3 comes with an HDD then, it is not a problem at all. You can always delete old data files and just keep the 3MB save files.

lol i noticed this too but at least jasonguy was saying that the system was slow which he ment that the drive is slow not the system. Fanboys get defensive though but it is slow and the 360 just added installs because the ps3 had them. The games run just fine off disc and often load faster than ps3 games off disc. Its unfortunate but i doubt people notice a few seconds here and there and its worth it for blu-ray.
