Whats with the increasing prices with games? The way the economy is right now, shouldn't prices be coming down or do games not factor in with the topic of money and budgets? How do developers choose a selling point. Should reviewers ratings factor in on price? A great game like Kill Zone 2 priced at $59; getting great reviews across the board and a not so great game like Afro Samurai priced at $69; getting hit pretty hard by some not so great reviews. Should the length of a game factor in on price or just game play? A lot of games now have DLC. The new Street Fighter for example costs $69 and change. You have to pay just to get alternate costumes? Come on people. I won't even talk about Little Big Planet.

Who's with me and who's against me. Let me know.

I concur. It's extremely difficult, especially in an economic crisis like this one.

because games cost no money to make amirite? the price for games at 60 usd has been this way long before the recession. and i can guarantee after the recession is over, it'll be the same. if you have a serious problem with game prices, rent them, or only buy ones you are REALLY interested in. stop complaining, no one is forcing you to purchase things

it's been the same way forever. I remember paying $55 for Tecmo Super Bowl on NES. And i know the final fantasy's on NES and SNESran in the 60-70 range. Game prices have been in the same 5-10 dollar range for nearly 25 years. I wish they were cheaper, but it's always been that way, and unless they switch over to all games being DLC than it will be that way for another 25 yrs

Even though games are 59.99 back in the Sega Genesis days games like Revenge of Shinobi were 80.00 dollars no game cost that much now.

...but I'm actually seeing less than stellar quality in many games. Everthing that's not a AAA title seems to be cutting corners.

agreed.. given that i was paying about £40 back in 1993 and I still pay £40 today, i think the prices are quite fair. especially since games cost a lot LOT more to develop nowadays.

I never knew Sega and Nintendo games were priced that high. I was too young to know. Its hard to look back and put that high a price on those games. Its laughable.

I agree, i thought it was just certain game developers. But now i'm starting to see that alot of different games are going up in price (by $10) I hope it goes back down to 59.99, cause i don't like spending 80 bucks on a video game.

hardly its all opinions, and no matter what every game that comes up cost alot. and if every game price varies then the customer will be annoyed. and quality of games is opinions and debatable.

Yeah, video games can only offer so much bang for you buck, there isn't many games that give you 80 dollars worth of enjoyment.

dont forget that the prices of most things have been increasing, so a game that cost $60 25 years ago wold cost $100+ in todays money (according to http://www.1soft.com/todaysdollars.htm), so $60 isn't much these days

A game shouldn't last 5hrs and cost so much. If I am paying $70 for a game then I better get my moneys worth and not have half of the game held back so I have to pay to download it later.

Try being in Canada. Back in January, PS3/360 titles were only at $59.99, now they're at $69.99.

It is really simple actually. People will charge what people will pay. If it is a game you love, you don't really care if it is $40 or $80, you'll buy it as long as you have $80 to your name.

Yeah, the increase in game prices has changed my spending habits considerably. For example, I'm not willing to wait a week after launch for Resident Evil 5 to arrive at my door so I can save 20 bucks. lol, recessions.

I only buy the games that I REALLY want new. All others I buy used. With the PS3 games being on durable blu-ray discs, it means that the quality of used software is better.

It's too early in NexGen to be asking this question. Kinda like asking Sony to lower the price of their console because of the same factor. It ain't happening, by the time the price does drop on this things the economy probably won't be so bad. If you ain't got the money then don't buy games, cause that would make a better point then buying them and complaining about the problem. Everybody is whinin about DLC prices when DLC is extra and not even needed to play the game, if you want more then pay more. Get a second job if it's that important to you.

I recommend you begin to visit "bargain forum" sites like cheapassgamer.com. Basically a forum dedicated to people posting the best online and/or in-store deals they find on games. I must have saved close to $100 if not more since I began to go on the site late last year.

man some of you guys were getting ripped pretty bad. SNES and GEN games in all the stores were i live "florida" were always 49.99. it was not untill N64 that i started seeing some games hitting 59.99 and 69.99 while ps1 games were 39.99 and 49.99. Any way the cost of makeing games, publishing them, shipping them ect has gone up just like every thing else. i think they have done a fair job so far at keeping the prices at or around 60 bucks.of course like the TS said alot of those games are better than others yet are the same price but hay thats the way its always been.

the prices in the past were similar to the ones today (i.e SNES, N64 days) but the underlying value of the dollar (or other currency) has fell since then. So if anything, i'd say the prices today need to rise to stay consistent with the prices in the past, plus development costs are on a whole new level; that must be accounted for as well. All this means is that in this economy the average consumer should be smarter and not buy every new game left and right, for better or for worse. So basically, i'm neither for nor against the higher prices. obviously, i don't like to pay the higher price, but i understand why they must be higher; i've since adapted. Keep in mind: I speak only for myself, and i'm not trying to establish some new standard.

Yes, I live in the UK and games are now up to like £50, I remember the first PS3 games (Motorstorm - Resistance) were like £25 each. They have to really cut back on these prices.

I'm not sure what you mean. I've been paying $60 usd since the PS3 came out for new releases and the most popular. Are they higher in other places?

You can always wait a couples weeks/months and buy it used. If you want the fresh stuff be prepared to pay $60.

Otherwise games have always been this expensive for at least 15 years.

Agreed, 60$ for a 10-12 hour game is crap, escpecially if it dont have a good online. Also the flood of FPS's is killing me, i need a good RPG to balance out all the gunning ive been doing.

I agree, that's why when I get my PS3 next month, I will be buying a older (cheaper) game for my first game. I will start with the older cheaper games on my "to get" list and work my way up to current releases. But I may get in the rut of waiting until any game I want drops in price before I buy it. I think my first game will be GTA4.

In NZ Fallout 3 ranges in price from $130-$140. RE5 and SF4 are also incredibly expensive at $130. Its ridiculous because Halo Wars and Killzone are both under $100 if you know where to look. I agree with the OP fully.

people panicked to fast when the government said we had a recession its not as bad as they say it is really the american people are just wrapped up in their own apathy. if u dont like a game then dont buy it wait until the price goes down if u want. the atari costed 600 dollars the ps3 doesnt even cost that anymore yet people complain about the price of it. its all just how people percieve the market. Most people dont think about it very much.

Game prices around the world are preety fair at the moment when you consider the state of the world economy. Ofcourse it would be nice to have cheaper games but most games only have a profit window of a few weeks and untill you can garentee that a $40 game will sell 33%+ better than a $60 game the later will be chosen by publishers seeking a profit.
