it's been the same way forever. I remember paying $55 for Tecmo Super Bowl on NES. And i know the final fantasy's on NES and SNESran in the 60-70 range. Game prices have been in the same 5-10 dollar range for nearly 25 years. I wish they were cheaper, but it's always been that way, and unless they switch over to all games being DLC than it will be that way for another 25 yrs

thetruespin

agreed.. given that i was paying about £40 back in 1993 and I still pay £40 today, i think the prices are quite fair. especially since games cost a lot LOT more to develop nowadays.

I paid $70 for FFIII on SNES when it released. I paid $52 total for KZ2 shipped to my door. I also just picked up Alone in the Dark: Inferno, Mercs 2, and Quantum of Solace for $22 used last Friday.

Yes, I live in the UK and games are now up to like £50, I remember the first PS3 games (Motorstorm - Resistance) were like £25 each. They have to really cut back on these prices.

Gamereviews2008
Games are 50GBP? Sure, if you don't look it in the right shops. I get almost all of my games for 30GBP brand new.

Well I totally agree with you, 60 USD is fair for some games, however when you need to buy extra "patches" (i.e. Prince of Persia's Epilogue, Little big planet stupid costumes or RE5 competitive "patch" It really gets the Sh":tout of me)... 60 is for me expensive mostly during these recession days, however what I do is that I simply stay out of the launch date frenzy and wait about 1 - 2 months and then I boy used games at ebay... The used games market is really competitive, not like the monopolistic new games market (and it really is an oligopoly, how is it that "most" games are 60USD just because they (developing firms) have agreements and they just compete with quality differentiation, not price.).

[QUOTE="shadowkiller11"]with budget and qualtiy of games getting more expensive, the price will go up.Hot-Tamale

...but I'm actually seeing less than stellar quality in many games. Everthing that's not a AAA title seems to be cutting corners.

I agree

the games coming out have been mediocre..theres noone trying to revolutionize and genres...or create new ones

the "industry"( hate calling it that because whenever things turn industry its always about money never art) is stuck on stupid... enough FPS

Enough war games... can we have a game where you play a slueth? in a GTA type environment?

how about a sim city game.... how about road rash...comon I swear game designers are completely braindead vegatables

prices are variable depending on the world economy and where in the world economy you are. i picked up RE5 for $64 last thursday (after tax) iirc killer instinct for the snes was like $80 so i don't think prices are too high, especially when compared like that.

Game prices, well i guess we get what we pay for. Killzone came from a studio that didn't stretch the mark in graphics, or gameplay. It pretty much followed the styleof all FPS, with the added partner. On the other hand, Afro Summarai offers a unique tv-spin-off with a celebrity voice. I guess when they invest more, they charge more. I have had a reallly hard time trying to determine which games are both unique in style and gameplay and offer a good value. I have found most EA titles to be safe, but don't clean their shelves off either. As for add-ons and donwloads, it depends on the game that you have. For instnace, PS3 bowling has worht while downloads and add-ons for about $1 each, and they add to an already inexpeensive game. However, Tiger Woods '09 has $8 course add-on's. Who wants to pay an extra $16 for courses that should have been there in the first place. The bottom line: 1) determine what type of gamer you are. 2) Invest in games that stretch your level of play and interest you. 3) Only pay for the add-ons when the game can't go without it (very rarely). 4) READ THE REVIEWS, and PREVIEWS!

dont forget that the prices of most things have been increasing, so a game that cost $60 25 years ago wold cost $100+ in todays money (according to http://www.1soft.com/todaysdollars.htm), so $60 isn't much these days

So true , a dollar in the early 1900's was worth nowdays 27$!

def. agree with you but you pay for what you get, some games are 39 to 49 dollars but they may not be too good. i know the new Socom was only 39.99 new but it also wasnt a very good game and can only be played online. i mean i think Sony tries there best to drop prices, they do have the greatest hits selection and it will only get larger. i remember the playstation 2 greatest hits and they had a ton of them so be patient. i do think that when a game is out for a while they should drop the price. Like sports games and stuff. i mean 8-9 months after Madden came out its still the same original price. but prices have always been like that, in the 50-60 dollar range ever since super nintendo. but hey think about it, it could be worse! haha

I concur that games are expensive, but it's really nothing new. I remember seeing some genesis games for $50 on a regular basis; I believe I even saw a few for $60.

Obviously, I would like prices to be cheaper just to save me money, but I know they aren't going to so I'm not going to complain about it. I've just come to accept that they are going to be $60 and just deal with it.

Whats with the increasing prices with games? The way the economy is right now, shouldn't prices be coming down or do games not factor in with the topic of money and budgets? How do developers choose a selling point. Should reviewers ratings factor in on price? A great game like Kill Zone 2 priced at $59; getting great reviews across the board and a not so great game like Afro Samurai priced at $69; getting hit pretty hard by some not so great reviews. Should the length of a game factor in on price or just game play? A lot of games now have DLC. The new Street Fighter for example costs $69 and change. You have to pay just to get alternate costumes? Come on people. I won't even talk about Little Big Planet.

Who's with me and who's against me. Let me know.

Sorry but if you live in America you're wrong with the $69 price tag of Street Fighter IV, where i live the price for the game is $59.99 in all stores.

That's what I am trying to say. You can buy a car for such a great deal now. A lot of companies are making adjustments. How about the gaming industry follow along.... not likely though.

Perhaps they know that in times like this videogames will sell and they are taking advantage of us. I honestly would own more games if they were 40$ a pop but 60$ that is pretty much my commute for the week to see my girl or i can use that money weekly for lunch. Not that i am cheap but i dont just go out and buy any game because i might like it now. I would rather wait till the price goes down.

there are other alternatives you know, buy a used game for way cheaper or just wait for the price to go down. You must understand the cost to develop these games do you think the developers want it to be so expensive and not make it cheap so everyone could buy it. Or just do what i do and rent. I agree this is insane and makes ZERO sense. Games here in Canada are typically $49 - $59. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw SF4 being advertised for $69. ANd now RE5 is also being advertised at that same price. There is no excuse for it other than trying to gouge customers wanting a famous brand-name game.

I honestly don't care about DLC. If people want it they will pay and if not then there is no harm. People can do what they want. But charging $69 for a game is insane and I won't pay it. I'll buy the game used somewhere for $20 - $40 which is more reasonable and Capcom can then cry about how the used game market is so hard on them.

While video games ARE expensive, as a hobby in general it can turn out to be relatively cheap in comparison to others. Game choice is a huge factor in overall price of gaming as a hobby. I only buy games with huge replay value whether it be through online play, trophies, or unlockables. With that mind set I can get by with buying only a few games a year with a couple of rentals thrown in the mix. Also when I take my lady out to a $45 dinner that lasts a few hours and ends up the same as a $3 dinner I suddenly feel much better about buying a $60 game that will last as long as I want it to.

If I may: not only are WE going through tough economic times but, so is the VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY. We pay bills like rent and such. Well, they do the same. Not to mention paying all the employees. Granted, so games are NOT worth the price of admission (Afro Samurai at $69 is highway robbery) but, there is an audience for such (enter descriptive word of your choice here) and game companies KNOW it!. That is why we are up to Dynasty Warriors 6 (PS3)

also, don't forget that the DLC is OPTIONAL not a REQUIREMENT. As for Little Big Planet you say you don't want to pay alot of money for games right? well, in this game you can design your own levels and play other levels that hundreds if not thousands of people have made. In short you're basically paying $60.00 for a game that keeps on giving! you don't have to buy Little Big Planet costumes because the game already has an array of costumes that you unlock as you play the game. Don't despair there are alot of games that are worth the money charged (Resident Evil 5 is one of them) and hopefully when the economy gets better the prices will too. EXTRA: watch out for GREATEST HITS TITLES!

I really don't get this topic....games prices have been the same for 20 years, 40-70 bucks for a new release. The thing thats driving some games up is bundles with accessories and special edition packs.

I thnk the prices are fair becuz games are getting harder to develop and are more time consuming to make, but paying for DLC is anotehr cheap way to empty your wallets. I understand the DLC for Rock Band and GH, but for every other game also? Like the new RE5 deathmatch option is gonna be $5, wat if people dont like it?Will capcom refund those people? I dont think the game prices are high, the DLC prices should be lowered

......if a game has DLC, then the game aint finished!!!!!!!!!! and developers are being ***** for charging it, its not enough for the gamer to fork out $60, $70 or even $110 for collectors editions or what not, they have to pay for DLC content that should be in the game!!!!!!!!!

..........well there are exceptions........!!!!! but RE5 aint one of them............

true, The only game worth 60$ is mgs4, i feel bad when i pay 60$ for something that doesnt come close to being worth as much
