Okay, I wont defend a guy against a bunch of people talking about him like he's the devil when in reality the guy has the potential to do great things for humanity.

He could potentially do great things for humanity but he sure is off to a crappy start. I'd love to see the kid become a neural sergion, but if that's what he intends to do then he needs to stop wasting his talents on hacking a gaming console and focus on school.

Hence why I said that hacking the PS3 is kind of below him...Or I said it doesn't hold a candle to his other achievements. Either way if I read things right geohot didn't actually hack the console. FailOverFlow hacked it a geohot released the key for everybody.

One of Geos downfalls. He loves the spotlight.

BTW, you should know I'm not condoning what he did in any way. I don't support piracy in the least but anybody should be able to admit that basically having an app store for the PS3 is a pretty sweet idea. I haven't installed the CFW because I have no idea what Sony is capable of and I don't want a bricked console. I'm glad he did what he could to stop the piracy and it really is too bad someone else found a different way of getting it to work. If we could get the homebrew without the piracy that would be ideal.

Yeah, man, nothing like a friendly debate, though, right? I can see benefits here and there and actually have no problem with homebrew, I just think its too risky to do such things knowing that it could (and would) lead to piracy. Here's hoping young George Hotz puts this behind him and gets headed in the right direction. ;)

I try not to debate to much on these forums because 9 times out of 10 it result in a moderation...especially if you prove the guy wrong. But this recent news on the PS3 has kind of split the whole community in 2 and it's making for some good debates. Got modded twice yesterday 5 minutes apart though:P

[QUOTE="Rakuho"]

[QUOTE="QWERTYCommander"] So you're comparing hackers to rapists and murderers?MrSelf-Destruct

He's simply stating facts about the legal system to support the argument that there's a "lack of morals" among certain defense attorneys, citing that even the most heinous of criminals receive legal defense, in which the attorney fights for his/her client's innocence despite the client's clear guiltiness.

Nowhere does he equate hackers to criminals of such caliber.

The real question should have been, "do you consider hackers criminals?"

Thank you, my good man. ;) And no. Hackers aren't automatically criminals. They do use their skills to break crimes, though, so some of them are. I really wouldn't necessarily say George hotz broke a law, but he did do something wrong and deserves whatever punishment he gets if any.

I wasn't actually asking the question, i just thought that would have been a better question than the one he asked (which is kind of overstepping my boundaries i guess). :P

But considering you answered it, I guess I'll bite. I don't think hackers should automatically be regarded as criminals either. But in this current case, it's all about the consequences of one's actions, or "causality" if you will. I agree with you -- it's not easy to point out Hotz's criminality (given the existent loopholes in the in the precedent law(s) or even the End User Agreement... which I haven't read :P ). However, Hotz is responsible for opening the floodgates to future criminal activities (i.e pirating). And given the potential magnitude of the damage that will befall Sony once these floodgates are open (if "magnitude" is even a relevant factor), Hotz should be held accountable. Even if he himself is against piracy (and let's a assume that's true) and didin't break any laws directly, it hardly exonerates him of all wrongdoing.

Removing "other OS" should have allowed US to sue SONY. They altered MY computer system without authorization, and FORCED an "upgrade" that disabled a part of what i had paid for. Sony is obviously fighting a losing battle. Jailbreaking/Accessing OUR OWN hardware's capabilities is far from illegal. Unfortunately, distributing means to circumvent these protections is illegal.

I guess GeoHot has to explain in court that SONY violated their own terms of service with us and he was only turning on what was there originally.

I really have to LoL at everyone saying the piracy is going to ruin the console. Lets list other consoles that have been hacked and pirated shall we?

Playstation 1

Playstation 2

Xbox

Xbox 360

Gamecube

Wii

Gameboy Advance

Nintendo DS(there's even emulators for this one already)

And guess how piracy affected all those consoles...it didn't. It didn't do a thing. If a console fails it's simply because they had bad games, the developers need to look for an excuse to their own incompetence and blame pirates for poor sale.

I notice a lack of the Dreamcast on that list.

As for the "other consoles" that got hacked, take for example the Xbox 360, they generally require other hardware to modify the console to be able to pirate games. In the PS3's case, no external hardware is needed, meaning anyone can just go on a torrent site, download the games they want, and then play them right away. This is not good in any way for Sony.

You can do the same for the Wii and yet it's big games sell like hot cakes. PS2 had a variety of simple ways to play backups and it did more then fine. DS is hacked as far as the PS3 and it's the best selling handheld ever.

1 and only 1 console has failed due to piracy. The Dreamcast, as you said. I addressed that in another post. What makes the Dreamcast a very special case is, as far as I know, it even had a slew of fantastic games on and the first game console to take things online. Of course I don't know too much about it other then people say piracy killed it. I never owned 1 or knew anybody else that owned 1. I never actually even heard the thing get talked about when it was out. N64 was all anybody ever mentioned at the time. Maybe I'll do some research on it:)

BTW, just as I left the Dreamcast out of my argument you picked the hardest console to modify to play backups...We're both guilty parties here:)

[QUOTE="WockaFlocka"]Does anyone by chance have a link to download the actual jailbreak?MrSelf-Destruct

...You're kidding right? And even if I would give you a link you couldn't use it because if you need to ask you wouldn't be able to perform the steps required to do it...especially if you're already on 3.55.

BTW, 3.55 isn't jailbroken. A jailbreak means they can run unsigned code. You can NOT run unsigned code on 3.55 CFW or not. You have to downgrade to 3.41 and lose PSN in the process. It's not worth it.

Exactly. And if you already upgraded to 3.55 there is no known way to downgrade.

3.55 is jailbroken and enough for you to run games on it and you actually need to be on the latest official firmware to run the custom one. I am playing a downloaded game right now on 3.55 and have full access to the PSN. Also it can be downgraded to 3.41. The reason why Sony is mad is because the system is totally broken and hacked. It's so easy to hack right now a kid could do it. All you need is a normal usb and 1 file. Meaning unless they change the hardware itself anyone can hack it right now and in the future via usb flash drive.

It just went from the hardest system to hack to the easiest ever made. Meaning if you know how to manually update your psp you can already hack a ps3.

Why not just make homebrew for the PC? You can have Linux on there as well can't you? Why are people so desperate to do it on the PS3, because piracy isn't the reason right?

...Right?

Dang. Looks like they aren't wasting anytime. i wasn't aware of anything beyond the first release which actually required Linux to install. Well, doesn't look like Sony can do much now.

Figured I would update you on the "piracy problem" everybodies talking about. It seems only a VERY SELECT few games even work.

What the hackers were doing was modifying the game itself to actually fully install the game on the PS3 while the PS3 thought it was only installing a PSN game, not a full retail game.

The thing is games that perform a syscall on boot up do NOT work with this method. And even some direct boot games aren't working either.

I'm more then certain people will figure this out eventually but for now only a very small number of games even work to be pirated and from what I seen, most people out there wouldn't buy the games anyways:P Big games like the COD series don't work for example.

Yeah there's an SNES emulator out as well as some arcade emulators. Those are the biggest reason most people wanted the hacks. Most people are asking for a N64 emu but that's a long while away they figure.

Something I forgot to say before. That syscall I think reports to a LV2self or something like that which can NOT be patched. Every hacker that's tried to patch it ended up with a brick. Until they figure that one out pirated games above firmware 3.41 wont happen(beyond the select few).

Hm. Well, if that's the case I see no reason Sony shouldn't be able to live with that. I'm sure, however, that they will not want to risk leaving that door open. Doesn't seem they have a choice in the matter, though.

Your actions, with your implied consent removed OtherOS function of the PS3's software. Sony's update made it clear that you could either keep the old version with Other OS or you could update and continue to use PSN and play games requiring newer firmware versions. You might want to play the innocent victim of the big mean corporation but it's simply not true. Sony are able to do this as they own the OS (you as a hardware owner lisence the software). Before the false analogies begin about precident being set for removal of other "core" functions it's important to differentiate between hardware and software functions. Sony are not going to disable the BluRay drive etc that you worked so hard to pay for, citing this as a precedent. Backward comparability was not removed from already capable consoles, consoles without B/C were purchased knowing full well that the hardware capability had been removed from the model. Every time you update the GameOS you agree to the T&Cs, if you don't like it maybe a board game is more for you. If losing OtherOS capability is the worst thing that happens in your life then you probably should be pretty happy.

[QUOTE="soulreaper-4"]Remember the Dreamcast people? Piracy without the need of hardware mod, a short time later no more games consoles and it was dead.F1ame_Shie1d

There's always an exception to the rule...1 console of basically every console ever released dies because of piracy and suddenly this is the PS3's fate too?

360 is really easy to Pirate on. The Wii is the same thing at the PS3. Install software, burn games. except on the PS3 you still need to hex edit the game eboot.bin in order for it to play. Something barely anybody knows how to do. Then there's the fact of HDD limitations and bandwidth caps. Downloading a 20 gig game on a 100 gig cap just isn't reasonable. You're really not saving anything if you go over your limit on the internet..

Sony will be more then fine.

But the problem is that basically anyone can just rent a game or borrow it from someone and copy it to an external harddrive.

Exactly. When you go to buy a PS3 you buy it for what the box says it does: Play games, DVDs, BlueRays. THE BOX DOESN'T SAY YOU CAN BORROW GAMES AND MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES FOR FREE.

Why is that a yay, this guy is trying to give you more right to something you own. He hasnt personally released anything that allows you to pirate games, thats just something that came of it. I hope the guy wins, it just shows you dont own half the things you buy.

It just goes to show how naive some people are, this had nothing to do with pirating games, Homebrew isnt piracy, stealing is.

I just dislike the dude, maybe I'm jealous because of his insane skills, or maybe it's because people are defending him way too much and act like Sony is the bad guy here. Or maybe it's because he uses his skills to hack the ps3 so they can sue the crap out of him. Or maybe it's because he acts like a smart*** and play around with this kind of stuff, taunting Sony etc, and he's still getting away with it. Or perhaps it's the really annoying images that you'll find when you google him. Either way, I hope he goes down. He probably won't though.

its good to see sony fighting, they will probably lose though. in the end the honest gamer loses the most. expect higher prices, strict drm, nex gen.

doesnt matter, the damange has been done...

Even they lose the trial to sony, they dont even have $ to compensate sony an ps3 gamers' loss.

They have nothing to lose (well, maybe few years in jail?) anyway.
