I have to admit that when I first start playing online multiplayer in games like COD, MGO and Soul Caliber IV, I get obliterated frequently. Most recently in Soul Caliber 4, where I've been playing for a week and become fairly good with one character--I go into online play and find that almost everyone has mastered all of the characters and combos perfectly (I know it's been out for a while). In COD4 I've gotten to maybe level 25 on the first prestige, and I'm barely at a 1.00 kdr. I'm decent in MGO since I only kill by knife and employ stealth tactics. I know that if I took more time to learn the games and memorize the maps I'd do much better, but then I wonder if I can ever match the obsessiveness of the best players.

How do you approach multiplayer when you're starting out? Are you naturally better at the games, or do you just take your defeats while you gradually improve? Does it ever discourage you that you might not have the time to become one of the best players, or are you happy being in the middle of the rankings? Or do you even care about your rank?

Great question by the way ..

The only online game I'm even good at is Madden .. but since the game sucks so much I barely play it ..

I take my beatings like a man, and still enjoy it .. like COD4 .. started out real crappy, terrible K/D ratio .. I gradually got better, but nothing to level of most people, but I played it because it was really fun .. which all that matters ..

Resistance 2, another game I am getting owned at .. seems like everyone online kills me with two shots while I can shoot them with any gun in the face five times and they don't drop, so don't really know what I'm doing wrong .. still I really enjoy the online, and whether I get three kills or twenty kills, I'm always having a good time ..

I'll eventually get better with time obviously, but the hardest part for me is that I don't have the time to sit down for 5-6 hours a night to play a game constantly .. hell even one hour a day ..

My job is overwhelming, working all hours of the day, and when I do get home I just want to relax .. I want to be better than I am, but don't have the time to practise and play ..

Maybe one day I can change that .. but until then I will enjoy being mediocre ..

know what you mean. mgo I still can't take someone down cqc style and the headshots are hard but doable...cod 4 I usually just go for it and try to follow what other people are doing and see how the guy that killed me, killed me...learn from those in front and around you...in RV2 at first I was awful, now I usually get angry and leave games if the teammate is playing like I know I did when I first started...I realized that and so now I try to let it go, I still love that game...so, what I'm trying to say is, yeah, find your groove, but what stops that are people that act all lethal on those that are just wanting to play and have a good time...but...socom was fun, until the ruthlessness set in with all the clans, even RV2 I constantly get kicked -for going solo or no mic, or I don't know...online is only so fun so far as the people you play with...don't take it personal, and just try to learn and get better with the maps, actions and team work -that's one thing I learned with RV2, sometimes COD4, mgo it becomes imperative, and with gears of war, man, it makes it so much the better...good post man, mp is where it's at.

Fake it till you make it. It takes me roughly 6 hours of playing a game till i start becomeing really good at it. It's really just having confidence in your self.

Hey guys, great responses! I think it's fun being mediocre as well, so I guess you just have to take things in perspective. Maybe sometime we can do some MGO training. Feel free to add me! My PSN ID is Laiphius. On MGO, my character is named B-Fin. Oh yeah, one game I haven't tried online yet is GTA4. There are just too many games to play, just with the games I have... I wish I could get paid to do this! I also have COD4, not COD5 yet, because Valkyria Chronicles is next on my list.

i don't care about my rank, in the end although some can be naturally better at a game through quicker reflexes or whatever. It's mainly down to time and effort put into the game. If you have just been playing a game for a couple of weeks, playing a couple hours a night, you shouldn't expect to be the master of a game.

It just take practice and the ability to notice things like patterns. Also, lag would have some part in it aswell.

Not many people change their playing style. Learn it, then learn a way around it. It's all about adaptaion. For FPS games, I would advise you to move slow and stealthy. (or as stealthy as possible) You can lose all you want. It's only when you adapt, you'll see changes and become better at it.

Now fighting games. Kind of simular, only you can't hide or flank them. So your best bet would be to learn those combos. You don't have to learn how to do those combos, but how to counter them. A lot of players are cheap and spam the hell out of a move. The trick is, learn how to make that spaming useless against you. If you can, play against some friends or something in a two player match. Keep doing it till you've got the hang of it, then build your strategy from there.

It's just the fact of, some people just figure it out off the bat. Others, need some time. There's no such thing as being a "bad gamer". You just haven't figured out how things worked yet. Some games I can jump into with ease. Others, I would have to figure out. Some days I'm god like, other days I just flat out suck lol It all depends on my mood, but that's just me and how I am. But that's the method I've used when I'm in an online game I know nothing about.

Also, one last VERY important thing. DO NOT care about your score or Kill/Death ratio. It's just meaningless numbers and you'll drive yourself insane. At the end of the day, it's just a game.

The first online game that didn't frustrate me enough to quit was Resistance 1 because it was so user-friendly, fast, lag-free, and most of all, fun - even during 50+ game losing streaks. Sure enough, I became addicted and got a lot better because, even in losing, the game wasn't frustrating. I stuck with it and eventually became good enough to bring my k/d ratio up to about 1.0 (I really only play deathmatch so 1.0 is decent).

Fast foward to Resistance 2, and my k/d ratio is about 1.3 for ranked deathmatch and has been climbing steadily from about 1.2. The two most important factors in my experience were fun and lack of frustration. However, I haven't had the same experience with some other popular games like Warhawk and Call of Duty 4, both of which frustrate me to an extent that I had to quit before I ever got the chance to get good at it.

Anyway, once you find a game that is fun even when you lose, you'll realize that over time, you're just going to keep getting better and better at it. And even if you never find the time to get to be as good as you want to be and as good as you can be, you will still have had fun in the little time you did spend with the game so you're not losing anything.

This is also true and a great point. It took me a while to figure out what works and what doesn't in Resistance 1, and I'm going through that same period with Resistance 2. Since you choose your weapon, it's taken me a few rounds per map to figure out what weapon I play the best with on that map. I've already figured out my weapon of choice for about 7 or 8 of the deathmatch maps in R2, and there are still more maps that I haven't played on enough to know yet.

That's where shooting them down comes in:P

I've taken down choppers with simple SMGs. One time, with a pistol on foot. It isn't really that hard. No different from shooting a car. It's hard to kill anything with that chopper gatling gun.

Three year olds in helicopters sounds hilarious. Yes, I have noticed that I've become much better over time. I think most of the fun is how much better you become compared to your own skills in the beginning, regardless of how much better anyone else is. I also enjoy when it isn't too frustrating to lose in a game. I'll have to try R2 sometime in the future! But by the time I get to that game, Killzone 2 will probably be out so I'll get K2 instead. Now that is a game I will play regardless of how much I suck, because the game is just that awesome.

One game that I don't hear anyone talk about is Eye of Judgment. I think that's a great game that isn't too annoying to lose at. The only problem is, I couldn't find cards at any of the local game stores...

Haha--I have a nice story about that. I used to be horrible at FPS games to the point where almost every death seemed ridiculous. I couldn't understand how the players killed so effortlessly. This was back in my Counter-Strike Source days. My entire goal was to get ten kills for the night and I would consider that an accomplishment. Regardless, I enjoyed playing the game because you could never predict exactly what would happen during each round, and I liked experimenting with my tactics. For a while, I believed FPS's were amusing, but not my thing. But eventually, I figured things out and developed FPS skills that have allowed me to enjoy almost any game that features a first person view and a crosshair.

I don't think you like the game for your kd ratio in the beginning, but more for the possibilities and the crazy, funny things that happen during the online play. I'd say few people are destined to have a horrible kd ratio forever. If they want to go online and look for tips and strategies, there's a lot of ways to learn. And if anything, they could be that 2/50 kdr "noob" that enjoys running around with the shotgun, catching everyone by surprise, lol. I did that once when I first started playing COD4; flanked the enemy team and blasted two of them from behind with a shotty--then my PS3 froze. But those moments last forever!

Like I've said in my previous post, it's just numbers. Numbers that don't mean anything at all but a displayed image. It doesn't matter what a number says. Either you like it, or you don't. It doesn't determine anything.
