going to buy a bigger HDD for my ps3

Hey guys, I'm currently owning a 40gb ps3 and I want more space because 40gb is too small because I want to add a few movies and music. I did some research and I know that the ps3 is compatible with a 2.5 inches S-ATA HDD either 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm. I just have a couple more questions that I can't really find my answer to.

- Is the PS3 ONLY compatible with the SATA internal HDDs?  Can it use any other brands HDD as long as it's 2.5 inches?

- How many rpm is the HDD in the current PS3s now?

- What is recommended for the PS3? 5400rpm or 7200rpm? 7200rpm seems that it runs faster but it seems that it might cause heat and overheat.

I assume only SATA works, so id stick with that, and go with an 5400 rpm. Its what is comes with.

BUT. If you want a good deal, just buy an external HDD, for the same price you can get like 500gb or more. Just download Swissknife V3 on your comp to make it compatible with the ps3, (simple reformatting into a FAT32) which is VERY easy to do. It works great for me.

Yeh i upgraded my HDD to a 2.5" SATA 320GB (5400rpm).

In answer to your questions, yes the PS3 is only compatible with SATA HDDs and yes you can use any brand just as long as its 2.5" SATA, the one in there is a Seagate but I put in a Samsung. The one currently in your PS3 is 5400rpm and I'm pretty sure its recommended to just stick with the 5400rpm ones over the 7200rpm for the reason you stated.

Also I think that internal HDD for the PS3 can now get up to 500GB. So I'd just go with a 2.5" SATA 5400rpm HDD, will be fine and is easy as to put in.

SATA is not a brand, it is the type of connector that the Hard Drive uses. Any brands HDD should work so long as it is a SATA hard drive and not an IDE hard drive and its 2.5 inches.

The 40GB HDD in your PS3 is 5400.

Both will work, 7200 creates more heat, but the PS3 has been known to take it, but I don't think the 7200 Increases speed that much, I remember reading about speed tests done with both speeds and there was either little or no difference.

I just recently upgraded to a western digital 500GB HDD with 5400 rpm. =) hope that helps.
