I checked the first 3-4 pages of the forums and i didn't see a topic on this...so

What did you guys think?

I thought the car looked great. The track and surroundings weren't too good but the size of the demo was tiny.

I'll admit it i did pretty bad. Wasn't anywhere near the lap record but i still found it pretty good. I don't havemuch tocompare with so im going to assume the physics are good. I don't remember spinning out in Gran Turismo 3 or 4 as much as this one. Going offtrack really affected the car as well.

The physics are slightly better than those in GT5 Prologue, but it's hard to tell with a car which wasnt in Prologue...

Graphics are pretty much the same as well. Oh well, still an OK demo and it was only 200MB.

I did about 10 laps with the DS3 controller, it wasn't bad. Took me a few laps to get used to it, but then I started improving my lap times pretty regularly. Then I plugged in my Driving Force GT steering wheel and it seemed like it got 10 times harder. I didn't notice the grass was as slippery as ice with the DS3, but with the wheel, it's ridiculous. Slide...and slide...and slide...and slide. Then when I finally stop, give it about 1% throttle, okay, now I'm doing another 360. I played GT5 Prologue for a few hours last night, on Professional with all the assists turned off. Let me put it this way - in Prologue, you can feel when you're pushing the car to its limits. Back off a bit, you're A-OK. Get greedy, and you spin out. In the demo you don't get that at all. The car seems to be 100% under control, then an instant later it's 100% out of control. You get no indication that you're approaching its limits until you've gone past them.

I can't even comment on the physics. Isn't the Active Stability Management set to 7 on the demo? I can't remember. It was not a pleasant experience by any means. The game is difficult enough on Professional without giving you a car with gobs of snap oversteer and grass that's as slick as ice.

ummm my thoughts are near enough the same as you but i did read a little review on the net and one of the producers did say that the graphics you see in the demo have been toned down a bit because they wanted it to be a quick and fast demo... my lap time was 1.40 something which isn't bad but its pretty hard to stay on the track :P

I'm really disappointed. I was expecting much better. It's as if they stopped working on it years ago and have just decided to release it now. There's no way I'll buy GT5.

its nto a full demo its only a time trail even for the gt academy to find the top fastest drivers in the game to win a chance to drive in a racing event. The demo only contains the physics really the car model is not as good nor the track as it will look in the full game to reduce the amount of space it takes up

kate_jones

That explains it. When I started playing GT5 Prologue I thought the slow cars performed like dogs and the fast cars were uncontrollable. Then I noticed that the traction control was on by default. I turned it to 0 and Eureka! Everything was suddenly 1,000% better.

No matter how many times people say this is not a demo, it is exactly how the masses are going to take it, as a demo, and anyone who has both consoles, like I do, would be hard pressed to say this game "demo" is anywhere near the level of quality of the forza 3 "demo"

I do understand what they are doing, and anyone can look at the two "demos" and just look at the size diffrence, this obviously was not intended to give anyone a real taste of the whole game, maybe the physics engine, which to me, is terrible.

I can understand that sim games are supposed to be hard with all the assists turned off, and it is difficult, but in a weird, not really reality way, grass is slippery, but not that slippery, did they have a downpour of cooking oil right before the race. And since when did this rear wheel drive car turn into a front wheel drive car

the beauty of rear when drive is the throttle/brake play and manipulating your car around corners, the 370 in this little time trail drives like my front wheel drive tiburon, hit a corner to fast and you just keep going forward,EPIC understeer, and no way at all to induce power oversteer (except the parking brake, and again, same as the Tiburon), worse yet, the buttons are mapped it the digital face buttons, WTF, is it 1997, there are analog shoulder buttons, use them, it makes a HUGE diffrence, especially if you are going to have the handling so damn touchy.

While its not a Demo, even as a piece just to show the physics engine, I am very disappointed, this should have been more, it should have been above and beyond what Turn 10 has done, and it isn't

Gran Turismo 5 is now a wait game for me, I was planning on buying it on the day it came out, like I was planning on buying Gran Turismo PSP, first day untill I found out they took out career mode, brilliant

I am not happy with how my old favorite franchise is shaping up

You do know that you can change the controls right?

I changed accelerate to R2 and brake to L2 (much better).

Fun, dont appeal too only the veterans of the franchize. Make it newbie friendly as well. Forza did it i dont see why GT can't do it. I just hope GT gives better customization then forza is no customization i dont know if ill buy GT5.

Agreed with your whole post, I'm just singling out this bit. In the more hardcore sim racers on PC (like the popular Race 07 series) driving with the assists off is hard, but not unmanageable - the game gives you various subtle indications about the car and whether it's in control, on the verge of spinning out or locking the brakes. You're right, this GT5 demo (or time trial, if they really expect people to believe that) offers little to nothing in the way of feedback on what the car is doing. They've got a neat little sway for weight transfer, but that does nothing to help you figure out if your wheels are about to lock up or if you're losing traction while accelerating too hard. I'm guessing they expect us to learn the tire squeals, but it's the same grating nails on a chalkboard noise no matter what you're doing or how much traction is lost on the asphalt.

I thought that the demo was good. It has more of a realistic feel to it and I love the first person view. I always wanted this game to have that.

I think I've got mid 1:50s for the untuned and mid 1:40s for the untuned - probably 1:47 or so, although I don't remember offhand. Apparently there's a way to cheat your times as a couple of the corners can be cut without penalty to shave three or four seconds off your time.

i was all over the place on the first 5 or so tries, then i got the hang of it but there is no way the glass is that slippery, and even if you try to hold a slight turn the car begins to slide.

I'm slightly disapointed to be honest.

The car and roads look nice, but the crowds, grass, and background look awful.

It feels like the series is not getting anywhere in terms of gameplay and it still feels the same..

I know this is a bit harsh for a demo, but I am sure they will improve it.

I am looking forward to the online and the track editor the most.

I dont reckon it was as bad as some people say.
I mean it did take me a while to get used to it cause the last GT game i played was GT3 Aspec.

The cars looked great, the tracks and backgrounds can be better.
Too many people are comparing this 200MB DEMO TO FORZA, A FULL GAME.

Just wait a little, i mean i reckon for just 200mb this demo was great i mean come on.

Im still looking forward to the full GT5 game.

My best time so far has been 1:44.799. First place on my leaderboards is at 1:36.396. Im loving the handling right now.

And for those people claiming its not a demo you should read the text at the beginning when you start playing.

It says "Welcome to the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trail Challenge . This is the demo version of the upcoming Gran Turismo 5"

couldn't agree with you more. I was slippin' and slidin' all over the place, something I never experienced in Prologue. Very dissapointing indeed.

I don't know how, but the demo seemed worse than prologue. I'm not big on graphics so that didn't bother me, but the handling of the car was just sad.

I want to tell myself this is just a stripped down demo, but I'm really skeptical about the full game now.

Polyphony cursed it. And it is a demo in that it's a demonstration of the physics we'll see in the full game. A ton of people will download it over the next few weeks because it says 'Gran Turismo'" and they'll play a few laps and then sit back and go "What the **bleep** is this?"

I liked it, the psychics are improved over GT5 Prologue, it was pretty little on hard side since the demo is locked on professional setting and I usually race on standard.

Very exited for the full release, I can't wait for WRC. ;)

That's exactly what I was thinking. Professional physics may be a fun challenge for the hardcore GT fans, but this is out there for the general public, many of whom probably don't know that in the full game, you'll be able to set it to amateur physics. They'll play this demo, find the car uncontrollable, and well...this sucks. "I'll never buy that game."

The demo sucked. I know its only 203 MB, but if you're gonna release a demo why release a crappy one? They would've been better off not releasing this at all and waiting closer to the release to put one out. I'm still gonna get the game, but this demo isn't gonna cut it.

I understand that the general public will just take it as a demo but it really isn't. They're not going to appeal to the casual set because the time trial isn't for the casual set. It's set on the harder settings to test the player to find the best driver.

When you use a controller on the GT Academy demo, the traction control is turned on, you can see and feel it when going round corners, it limits throttle at times when you try to use it.

When you use a wheel, traction control is turned off, you can also feel that. So the car oversteers more and more input is needed to drive the car, to control it properly, which is way more fun imo :P

I usually play LFS and that has some of the best physics for a driving/ racing sim, and I would say the physics in the GT Academy demo hold up very well compared to that. In short, I think the physics are great :D

Regarding the status of this GT5 file on the PSN, its not really a demo so much as its a competition. If anything was a demo it was Prolouge haha, albeit an expensive one.

My best time is 1:49 .... pretty damn good for a non racing gamer using a DS3.

Clearly you dont know how to kick the tail out when entering a corner, Come back when you have the expirience to drift into and out of a curve, only people that have never played a gran turismo, let alone even driven a car will pick a rear wheel drive car and think you can get it to slide going full throttle into a turn. A quick tip, try braking alot to transfer the weight, then some gas, not alot, then contersteer and youll find you just took a entire corner sideways.
