Ok, I know very little about MGS and have only ever really played GTA III. But I picked up GTA IV on release and it is a great game. I rented MGS 4 and it was good but it hasn't grabbed me. Why I liked GTA IV is that apart from the story and missions you are given a massive world to fool around in.

My impressions of MGS 4 were that it is an interesting/unususal story that is driven by a high end cinematic style. But I was frustrated sitting through 10minute long cut scenes and I just wanted to shoot stuff up but the nature of the character is to avoid conflict?!?!

I will certainly rent MGS 4 again and give it another go, but for me GTA IV gets the crown. By no stretch I am saying GTA IV is game of the year. Not in my book, but of the two PS3 games that both received 10's GTA IV so far has the lead.

Why is MGS 4 so loved? Is it the backstory set up by the previous games? Conversely I would say that GTA IV has been touted as more of a let down given the expectations and I have almost never come across this with MGS 4.

What do you guys think?

I disagree, i just get bored with GtAIV, i do agree thats it is a great game, but it just doesn't capture me the way MGS4 does, but if you haven't played vice city or san andreas then might not get the feeling that gta 4 resticts you.

MGS4 is a stealth action game which means you cant go around everywhere and shoot stuff up.. thats what the game BLACK is for and i actually enjoyed that game as a sidenote. But MGS4 i think is enjoyed the most by its original fans who have followed the MGS storyline, because all the loose ends are tied up in MGS4 and some people are going WTH!?!??! So in conclusion the reason maybe you didnt enjoy the game was because you just wanted to shoot stuff up. The cinematics are not that annoying or at least not to me. MGS4 gets my vote and my vote for GOTY

Personally I enjoyed or should i say I am enjoying MGS4 way more than GTA4, GTAIV just didnt have the same feel as san andreas or vice city. I just seemed to get bored of it although I still completed it.

GTA IV is a brilliant game, but i am proud to own both of these titles and I'm afraid that MGS4 is by far the more involving game. If GTA has a great story, then it is impossible to describe the depth and sheer birlliance of the MGS4 story. The gameplay, the graphics, the sound quality, the voice acting, the cutscenes (ok some are boring and very long, but i'm talking like 2 in the whole game. And they are only boring once you have completed that game and know what is going to happen) everything in the entire game is pure birlliance.

So yeah, GTA is a great game.

MGS4 is a GOTD game.

MGS4 has depth, character evolution, great story, brilliant gameplay! GTA4? Mindless killing, and some "missions". Nothing beat Solid's last mission.

Well although MGS4 has an awesome story and better graphics i have to go with GTA4 because in MGS4 i got a little confused with the story because i didn't play the previous metal gear games but GTA4's story is easy to follow and it really got me hooked in the game.

If i had to choose i'd go with GTA4.

Not another one of these threads!

MGS4 always beats GTA4, and by a large margine, in these threads. Rightfully so.

Both games are decent but for different reasons. When I feel like randomly running around, driving, racing, killing, getting stupid... it's GTA. When I feel like doing something a bit smarter, stealthier, dramatic... it's MGS.

I'm glad I have both. Two good games that suit two types of gaming moods.

Cheers,
