According to these slides that Guerilla Games used in a developers conference in July 07, the engine allows them "Highly Customizable Color Correction." Which is exactly what the team added to those pictures in photoshop.

Here you can read all about it. Its on page 41.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4nxbzlatasx

Many people are extremely mad at Guerilla Games because of the new screenshots. Guerilla Games stated that they only did some color correction and some minor polish. People keep saying that there is a huge difference in the pictures. I've heard people on here saying that they will cancel their preorders! Because the orange tint that is in the new pictures was added in photoshop? Listen to yourselves! You're canceling your preorder because of an orange tint that wasn't in the previous pictures. Nobody complained when you saw they actual gameplay. You all said it looked fabulous. But you sure as hell talk crap when all they did was add an orange tint to one of the screens. Not to mention, the game is almost half a year off and Guerilla Games have said that there will be numerous improvments made to the game.

Just to prove that Guerilla Games didn't lie about minor polishes and color correction. I've taken the screenshot from the trailer on the PSN and photoshoped it myself, only using color balance and gradient. THE PICTURES ARE STILL USING THE INGAME ENGINE! It still has the same textures, motion blur, shadows, HDR, and polygon counts.

My Photoshoped image is on the top and the new screenshot is on the bottom. (Keep in mind that all I did was some Color Balance and gradients)

Original comparison byPSU

Wake up people! You've already seen gameplay footage! You loved it! Konami came out with pictures during TGS of character model renders which I believe to be "Pre-rendered." It doesn't change my opinion about the game. I'm not going to go cancel my preorder because of some dumbass **** like that. I've seen the Gameplay footage and I know what the game will look like when it is released.

I wouldnt say that people are extremely mad about it. I for one would just like to see the game for what it is. If they are confident in their product, why do they need to pretty it up at all? I'm really looking forward to Killzone, but if everything they have shown us so far is not what the game will really be I know for a fact many people, including myself, would be very dissapointed.

I'm just saying all of this based on my experience with Assassins Creed. When that game was first announced, and the following time up until its realease I was soooo pumped for it. I thought it looked amazing that you can be an assassin in a GTA type game, but once I got my hands on the game and played it, I was extremely dissapointed because it was nowhere near what it was made out to be by the devs and everyone that had anything to do with the game.

So people are mad because they made a screenshot look more realistic? And they are mad because they don't think that the game will look like that?

I don't get the what the fuss is about. Developers do this a lot now a days. Besides people have actually played the game. And that cannot be photoshoped. And from what i've read the people who have played it have still called it absolutely gorgous.

Maybe but not all developers using this technique already lost credibility with a CGI trailer that they falsely showed as being in-game footage. I so hope Killzone 2 will look as great as promised but I'm really worried. I think it's just dishonest from their part.

Theres already gameplay footage out there. People know what the real game looks like! They've known since E3. Everybody seemed to be satisfied with the gameplay footage, but when Guerilla Games comes out with a real time screen with an "Orange Tint," People say they will cancel their preorders. Absolutley ridiculous! Someone even said that they are going to cancel their preorder and wait for the reviews!

I don't think people are talking about canceling their pre-order only because they think they won't get their "orange tint". I rather think that they're upset because they've been lied to (2 times) about a game they're looking forward to play. Because whether or not the game looked great in the last trailer, the fact remains that the devs falsely embellished the truth 2 times. And those devs know damn well how much hope their game generates.

What you're saying is the truth. But it's completely stupid.

That justifies the reason to not buy the game? Not at all. I'm not attacking you directly by the way, but that has to be the stupidest reason not to buy Killzone 2. If you see gameplay videos of a game and you think it looks like one of the best looking and funnest games you have ever seen, wouldn't you want to buy it despite what the pictures say? I guess I could say that Konami is lying about MGS4 too. They release character renders that I believe strongly are "Prerendered." There are many things about the first trailer that aren't in the game anymore. Soft Shadows, Ran at 60fps, more particles flying throught the air, and so on. People didn't complain like they are for these Killzone pics (that are obviously in-game with only an orange tint added to them.) Oh well. It doesn't make a difference. People will see how good the game looks when it comes out. They'll buy it and they'll love it and they'll forget all about these pictures. They THINK they were lied to. They've been shown in-game footage and these people loved it. Whats insane is that NOBODY was complaining about the colors in that scene before these pics were released. In fact, a lot of people have an animated GIF of that scene as part of their signature. Like they are very proud of how it looks. Completely Hypocritical!

same...it's really harder to get any closer to that cgi than they did when still in prepre alpha stage when that was shown...and who knows maybe they added those colors to show what they will believe will be the final product when they are done...they still have time to work on it so who knows

Well, the difference here is that "you think they are prerendered". If they are, Konami hasn't been caught, while Guerrilla has been. I frankly don't care about Killzone. Never played the first and I'll probably never play the second, but it is stupid not to buy it after seen an actual game trailer and be mezmerised by it.

As far as MGS4 is concerned, Kojima has no reason to lie or make up stuff. He has blown people away every single time with each MGS. I am sure that MGS4 will be no exception, so I doubt they'll try and embellish things. Guerrilla on the other hand has a lot to prove, cause if I remember correctly, wasn't Killzone below expectations?

who cares? the game looks pretty great graphically imo but thats really all that it has going for it, this screen shot bs isn;t going to keep me from buyingKillzone 2, the only thing stopping me from buying it is that Killzone 1 sucked so I'm totally not interested in the series at all and it looks like just another FPS

Anybody who would cancel a preorder for this reason is a complete idiot and doesnt deserve to play a quality game like this in the firt place. Sony has obviously worked a long time on this. All these idiots can go buy another rushed game from EA instead if they think a little photoshop touch up is a huge deal.

No. They sold it as being in-game footage. Watch the following Tube of an interview Jack Tretton gave to G4 at E3 2005. At the 4:10 mark, Jack states: "That is real gameplay."

Please note: The character render of meryl came out VERY shortly after the trailer of the first picture was shown.

So you're telling me that the second picture here is the exact same character model as the screen shot above it? The textures on her strap are clearly worse in the actual trailer. The polygon count on her arm is clearly worse in the trailer. Look at her eyebrows! Look at her Hair! Look at the polygon count of her wristband! I don't THINK these models are prerendered, I KNOW they are!

Heres another comparison

This picture below is from Sept 21, 2006. Why does it look better than the newer render from July 24, 2007? Because it wasn't the real character model. Notice the wrinkles under his eyes are more detailed in the old render. The lighting is a lot more soft and realistic looking in the old render. There is also more self-shadowing. His whole face just looks way more detailed.

The picture below is obviously a touched up photoshop of the current real-time Meryl character model.

Why isn't anybody saying, "This isn't the how the lighting in the real game looks! We've been lied to! Everybody cancel your MGS4 Preorders!! I'm gonna have to wait until I see the reviews till I buy MGS4."

Uhh. Ok. Now you can see how stupid some peoples' logic is.

If it's not stupid then why wouldn't you cancel your preorder? If you wouldn't cancel your preorder then you obviously disagree with the people that would. After a while, everyone knew the first trailer was fake. Then 2 years later they showed the real gameplay. Everyone thought it looked great! Then they released a slightly touched up screenshot (like it would even matter since anyone who preordered the game has most likely seen the gameplay videos anyway) and everyone flips like it's some big deal. Its absolutely stupid! They aren't even denying it like they did with the first trailer. Who's to say the game won't look like that when it comes out?

I hadn't seen those pics, I see your point. I thought you we're talking about the characters on the videos being rendered so differently from the gameplay ones that it was a huge difference. I am sure Kojima and his crew do photoshop their screen caps of characters and stuff. Most developers do. Now, the main point here is wether or not this should detract you from buying a game?

In MGS4's case, if you don't buy it cause the character's posters look better than the in-game characters, then you're an idiot. If you don't buy Killzone 2 after you saw the real gameplay trailer and you liked it, but due to a photoshoped screen you'll throw that sentiment away, then you're an idiot also.

I just don't care about Killzone, and it doesn't matter what few screens say about the difference between MGS4 gameplay and renders. I've played all three MGS and loved them and I am sure I'll love this one, specially after the gameplay trailer. Had I like Killzone one (never played it) then I would probably have bought the second. People just need to forget sometimes about cosmetics and think if they really enjoy a game. Crap, pac-man is still fun after all this years and it looks like hell!

Who's to say the game won't look like that when it comes out?

sushiboyyyy

Come on! People aren't STUPID because they're upset about a company tarting up their products! They have their reasons to be upset and I don't think calling them names will convince them to re-order the game. And I don't want to be rude at all but why do you care so much about people cancelling their pre-orders? Whatever they do, WE will enjoy Killzone 2, won't we?

What are you talking about? I didn't single anyone out and call them stupid. I'm not calling anyone names. I said that their logic is stupid and it is! Just check out what a lot of these people are saying!!

Why do I care? Why do people care about anything? When a large number of people attack something you like, isn't it natural to say something back? Especially if their argument is just plain ignorant? I wish to educate people. I don't like stupid logic and it's a problem with me. After looking at your blog, I would assume that you are somewhat passionate about educating people on the subject of "Violent Videogames." If a large group created a thread on here in support of Jack Thompson, you wouldn't have anything to say about it?

guys making a big fuss over this game simply WANT a reason to hate on KZ...i mean come on! when has an increase in orange ever deterred someone from buying a game? regardless, those 'touched up' screenies make for some damn good wallpapers.

I really enjoyed Killzone, played it on the PS3 - seems there were less graphical bugs. Sadly I suck at FPS so the stages where guys send grenades and kill you all the time were too much for me : I hope they can understand that a guy 400 feet away can't always hit you exactly in KZ2.

I think there was some great cinematic entertainment, scenery was quite varied and gameplay somewhat different with characters. I hope the weapon we see often in footages (the one with the really small and green visor) will not be the main one, as I'll have great difficulties aiming at people.

Im a little confused... why do people keep saying that the lied about the screen? If anything they're being honest and telling the truth compared to many other developers.

I just remembered this picture from back before the PS2 came out. Some of you might remember a game called orphen. THIS is the point at which you should get mad at developers for lying about their graphics engines.

Take a good look at this pic. Looking back at it now, I noticed it has a lot of graphical qualities that a lot of games don't even have today. Just think, this was what a launch PS2 game was supposed to look.

When I got to that actual part of the game. Heres what I saw instead:

Just look at the difference. In the first pic:

The grass is actually 3D and sticking up out of the ground.

The swinging blades actually have motion blur (barely even seen in games today)

The concrete slabs are actually sticking up out of the groud as well.

The textures on the ground look more like what we are seeing now.

His character model has much better textures and is actually shaded.

The lighting is more realistic.

No Jaggies.

----- anyways, back on track, what I'm saying is that when you see developers flat out lying about their game engines, you can complain all you want. But what the hell? The Killzone 2 pic that was realeased is exactly the same as the trailer. The only difference is a damn color filter and you people are whining about that? Get real people!

Guerilla has no one to blame but themselves. When we were shown KZ2 at E3 a while back they left everyone wondering whether this was in game or pre-rendered, or CGI or whatever you want to call it. And now they show us these screens and left the public expecting it was real time gameplay and not touched up, until they were called on it. If they just came out in the first place, we wouldn't have this talk. But then again, maybe all this news is good news for them keeping KZ2 talk alive.

I could care less for CGI level of graphics.

It will not happen for few years now and when it does it will be the first on top level PC component. This generation of consoles will not be able to do it anyway.

As for Killzone 2, I'm hoping for well done gameplay. The game already looks fantastic, I don't require more.

Screenshots don't make the game, gameplay does and so far video gameplay trailer for Killzone 2 was satisfying.

They will never reach CGI level of graphics, because CGI will be improving aswell.

Well at some point in my life I may have considered it natural to talk back but with time I came to the conclusion that we all have our reasons to think differently. And who am I to say somebody's logic is stupid only because I don't agree? And concerning my blog, first of all, thanks for reading it! Secondly, I may want to educate people like you wrote but to me, educating doesn't mean cramming my way of thinking down people's throat. It only means I'm showing my side of the medal. Same goes for Jack Thompson! Everything I know about Jack Thompson's ideology on videogames I consider it utter crap. Still, that doesn't make him or his logic or his supporters stupid.

Let people be, dude!

Well, obviously you disagree with me and you keep coming back and reply to my opinions. Why don't you just "let ME be? " I'll tell you why. It's because you and I have different ways of thinking and your trying to change my mind on the subject. If you simply wanted to "let people be," then you wouldn't be replying to any of my opinions that I post here.

I'm not cramming my way of thinking down people's throat. That is a ridiculous statement. All I'm doing is posting my opinion on a gaming forum. I'm simply educating them on the subject like you said you would to. How am I cramming my way of thinking down peoples throat? I'm not using any type of force here am I? All I'm doing is doing the same thing that your doing to me right now. Thats pretty much the whole point of these forums. If we came here for news, then we should just go to Gamespot's main page. We come here to discuss our opinions. Or as you say, "showing your side of the medal." It's the same exact thing.

Jack Thompson has said that the Playstation 2 launch in the United States was "Pearl Harbor 2." If Jack Thompson was able to pass a new law banning violent video games in the U.S. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't "let it be." I sure as hell wouldn't. You would fight back and so would I. We are really getting off subject here. The subject is the new Killzone 2 pics. You've already said that you disagree with the people who say they aren't buying the game anymore because of the new screenshots. Anybody with any common sense would know that that logic is stupid. That's why I made this topic. To point out to them that not buying the game because of some pictures with an "orange tint" is kind of an idiodic way of thinking. You said it yourself. If you agree with me then why are you and I debating?

You're right! I know I'm kind of insistent and I'm sorry for that. It's just that sentences like those I highlighted irk me because you're not giving people the benefit of the doubt as to if they're intelligent enough to make the enlightened choice of not buying the game as a sign of protestation. I think it's very "because sushiboyyyyy said so!"-ish. Anyway, sorry again! And you're right, let's get back on the subject.

Whether or not the last Killzone 2 pics have been manipulated, if the final product looks anything like it does in the 3 developer walkthrough videos on this IGN page, I'm going to need sunglasses to play the game. Too much beauty at the same time! :P But seriously, is there anyway that that demo in the videos can have better graphics than the final product will? Can they tart-up a demo?

I know that it will look great, but will the game have just as much substance as it does flash? I dont think anyone can answer that until a few extensive hands on reports are done, and I dont mean just a few moments, hours is more like it. Until then I remain cautious about KZ2. I both want and need it to far exceed the first game's gameplay and such before Ill consider it a purchase and not just another rental.
