According to these slides that Guerilla Games used in a developers conference in July 07, the engine allows them "Highly Customizable Color Correction." Which is exactly what the team added to those pictures in photoshop.
Here you can read all about it. Its on page 41.

Many people are extremely mad at Guerilla Games because of the new screenshots. Guerilla Games stated that they only did some color correction and some minor polish. People keep saying that there is a huge difference in the pictures. I've heard people on here saying that they will cancel their preorders! Because the orange tint that is in the new pictures was added in photoshop? Listen to yourselves! You're canceling your preorder because of an orange tint that wasn't in the previous pictures. Nobody complained when you saw they actual gameplay. You all said it looked fabulous. But you sure as hell talk crap when all they did was add an orange tint to one of the screens. Not to mention, the game is almost half a year off and Guerilla Games have said that there will be numerous improvments made to the game.
Just to prove that Guerilla Games didn't lie about minor polishes and color correction. I've taken the screenshot from the trailer on the PSN and photoshoped it myself, only using color balance and gradient. THE PICTURES ARE STILL USING THE INGAME ENGINE! It still has the same textures, motion blur, shadows, HDR, and polygon counts.
My Photoshoped image is on the top and the new screenshot is on the bottom. (Keep in mind that all I did was some Color Balance and gradients)

Wake up people! You've already seen gameplay footage! You loved it! Konami came out with pictures during TGS of character model renders which I believe to be "Pre-rendered." It doesn't change my opinion about the game. I'm not going to go cancel my preorder because of some dumbass **** like that. I've seen the Gameplay footage and I know what the game will look like when it is released.
