I am in the midst of playing Batman: Arkham Asylum and I have a few nit picks.

The combat, characters and scenery is very compelling. However there is many points that feel like they just tacked a certain level on just to extend and mix the game up. For instance the Scarecrow levels which just seem to take me out of the game and are always the same thing.

But the real pain for me, is that after about 8 hours or so of repetative gameplay, you enter the Killer Croc's lair and the only reason they could think of for this was that you needed a antidote that just so happened to be in there. And if you look past that you still have the tedious job of walking around . . . waiting for him to jump up, hitting him down, collecting spores, rinse and repeat.

It literally put me off the game, I just do not see how this game is rated so highly.

So my question is, has there ever been a game you have played that had lots going for it but certain levels/plots ruined it for you.

Yes, Mafia II. There was this driving section of the game I couldn't get through with several tries. I need to get back to it at some point because I was enjoying it a lot until then. I could change the difficulty if I had to but I'd been playing on hard and wanted to keep it that way.

The second blood line dream in Max Payne could very well have done if there weren't a level select cheat. The crap jump controls and blurryness of the graphics were the problem.

A single portion has never done it in for me. If its just one or two levels I just grit through and become all the more happy to get past it. This is probably why I have always finished all my games. If there is a glaring flaw in the overall makeup of the game then I would stop playing it.

Mass Effect 3 comes to mind, I was sighing at around 60% saying to the game "ok, just end already." And while I loved Uncharted 3, some parts of it were too tedious (ship yard level). Finally Bioshock, loved the game and the world but I felt it became a bit too lengthy after a certain part.

If only i had that kind of power lol I just can not stand it when the devs have been lazy and make a pointlessly, mind numbing level just to expand on the game.

I would rather it be slightly shorter than longer with some painful levels

yes actually... certin cliche's make me walk away from a game and never purchase it, no matter how fun it is to play.. example- i was very interested in bionic commando for the ps3 intill i watched on a utube playthrough the old sexist cliche where the big bad b!tch comes out in a cutscene, humiliates your character, and just because its a *she* u can't fight back or do anything about it! why do they belittle men like this in sooooooo many videogames? makes me wanna punch every b!tch i see... so yea, there most definately are those games out there which would otherwise be cool if it weren't for certin annoying perks, i totally feel your pain bro.

had a huge problem in Arkham Asylum, there's a stage with one center platform and two higher side platforms, they become electrified one at a time, and you have to get near a platform and press X ; problem is it works randomaly so you get electrified, lose health, jump onto the platform, get mobbed, then you have to change platform, it doesn't work again, you get electrified, rinse and repeat, I stopped playing the game

I am shocked. The scarecrow fear gas sequences and the level in Killer Crocs lair were amongst my favourite in the game. They were no way tacked on to extend the game, and were purposefully placed for both story and gameplay.

But to answer your question, there have been some games that were utterly fantastic, but contained a section maybe that I didn't enjoy. Dead Space, my favourite game, contained a part where you were on an ADS cannon, and that wasn't fun because it was difficult.

exactely! the scarecrow scenes were the coolest, creepiest, funnest parts in the game imo, no freakin way they were just *tacked on* it pissed me off that they didn't have any of these scenes in arkham city, especially since they mentioned several times that not only was the scarecrow not dead but he WAS in arkham city..

I don't like admitting I was nervous during a Batman game lol, but the scarecrow sequences were certainly creepy. I was disappointed he didn't at least feature in a side mission like the Mad Hatter or other side characters, but hopefully if a third game happens, Scarecrow will play a big part because he's the only villain (I think) that can properly explore and bring to light Batman's nightmarish past. Psychological threats are amongst my favourite kind of threats.

I dont honestly see how the fact that the antidote just happens to be in crocs lair is good for a story.

and although the scarecrow scenes did switch things up, it just slowed the pace in my opinion.

i guess its a love it or hate it game

How about the water level in Ninja Turtles for the NES? Never did get past it (even though it is pretty early in the game), but I always enjoyed playing up until that part, lol.

Also, I echo that bloodline part on Max Payne. I remember it taking me forever to get through that. It was so close to the end of the game too, which totally killed the pace.

What?? Having the ingredients for the antidote in Killer Crocs lair not only ties in a great villain from Batman's universe, but also makes for a unique sequence of gameplay unseen before then in the game. Or would you rather have had the ingredients right outside in a flowerbed? It's fantasy fiction, it doesn't have to be completely logical, it's all about making for a creative and consistently enjoyable experience with variety (keyword).

And scarecrow scenes slowing the pace? It's supposed to be a reasonably slow-paced game because you're playing as the World's Greatest Detective which involves mystery and problem-solving. What did you do when it came to stealth sections??

I dont think you understand what i mean . . . i like the fact they tie in killer croc, but you said CREATIVE??? how on earth is the way they do it creative, its like they put the worst imaginable board of storywriters together to come up with " how about this . . . batman needs some spores . . . we put them exclusively in the crocs cave with no explination as to why that is"

and the gameplay in that area is good, but it drags on for far too long, after hitting croc down 15 odd times . . . it gets a little tedious . . . hard to imagine :P

I honestly could have thought of a better way of tieing in the killer croc.

as for the scarecrow levels, the first time, yh it was fun, but after 3 times . . . again tedious as they dont change it, same looking design, same positioning of scarecrow, same boring obstacles.

each to theire own i guess

oh they'll make a 3rd one bro no question about that, good as arkham city did i look to see atleast 2 more sequels and hopefully the scarecrow hallucination scenes will return, i always thought the scarecrow would've been a much better main villain in arkham asylum, not that i don't luv the joker but with the scarecrow it could've made for a much more epic final boss fight, i mean can u imagine what would happen if the scarecrow drank the titan!!??

Metal Gear Solid 3 Basic Version where you only hat the Atop Cam and no radar, also quite useless detection tools.

You lay down in a bush 95% camouflaged and wait there for 10 minutes to check your souroundings, nothing happens, as soon as you jump up you hear a soldier "Huh?" and try to escape him while you're straight running into his arms.

And the alarm not wearing off till foreeeeeeeever.

Still sorrowed my way through and beaten it one day. Looking forward doing so on the HD collection, this time with moveable camera like in PW.
